For those new to this website:
Tamara Rubin is a multiple-federal-award-winning independent advocate for childhood Lead poisoning prevention and consumer goods safety, and a documentary filmmaker. She is also a mother of Lead-poisoned children (two of her sons were acutely Lead-poisoned in 2005). Since 2009, Tamara has been using XRF technology (a scientific method used by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) to test consumer goods for toxicants (specifically heavy metals — including Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Antimony, and Arsenic). Tamara’s work was featured in Consumer Reports Magazine in February of 2023 (March 2023 print edition).
Just posted on instagram:
I have been working towards owning my own working instruments for years.
I am now getting these two donated (currently-non-operational) XRF instruments repaired!
I am so incredibly lucky – and so incredibly thankful – that (after asking around to many friends and readers) about a dozen readers contributed enough (nearly $1,000, altogether!) to cover the costs to get the two used instruments evaluated for repair ($450 each + $103 for packing and shipping!) — and I am also filled with gratitude that I was also able to secure a short-term interest-free loan (from another generous reader / friend / follower / fan of my work) to cover the costs of repairing these two donated instruments once they have been evaluated!!!
What’s next: earning enough to cover the cost of the repairs!
Help #LeadSafeMama meet this goal. Hire me for a home consultation, please!
- If you are interested in having a one-on-one home consultation with me (anywhere in the country [and depending on where you are I may even be able to head out of the country for work in the next six months, too – as long as my costs are covered!]) let me know (pm me!).
- OCTOBER: I am scheduling home consultations for most of the month of October 2021. The Lead Safe Mama October travel schedule (along with details and costs for booking a home consultation) is published on the website [just click the link below for all of the details – and check out the image below with my October travel calendar as it stands today.]
- In October I am already planning on heading to Illinois, Florida and Southern California – but have room to fit in more states as well. Where I end up going just depends on who books my time first!
- AUGUST: I may also be traveling cross country and available for home consultations in August! I will know more about that when I get my surgery schedule in early July. [I have to have a follow up surgery on my broken leg to remove some of the hardware, so the Lead Safe Mama August travel is dependent on that surgery and anticipated healing time.] If you are interested in possibly getting on my August travel schedule please let me know that too! If things go as planned for that trip – we expect to take the southern route across the United States (driving) and will definitely be traveling through Arkansas, Louisiana and Massachusetts.
- For those who cannot afford to hire me, the best thing you can do in support of this work is to grab a link to any one of the popular articles here on the home page of the site each day and share it on your social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
Thanks for being here! Thank you for supporting my advocacy work.
As always, even though Lead Safe Mama, LLC is not affiliated with a nonprofit — this work is a community collaboration — and I would not be able to do everything I do without your support. While I would prefer to repay this loan with earned income, if you are in a position to make a contribution towards covering these costs — contributions will not be turned down! Here’s the “Chip In” link with more details on that, too!
Thank you again; I hope you are having a great start to your summer!

Dear Tamara,
Thank you for your important work with lead etection.
I have bought several items….mugs. scarves, bags and umbrellas, Laurel Burch company does not answer me about use of lead in their designs, I have given up waiting for replies to my two notes to them.
I hope you can help me……I will not give out as gifts until I know they are lead free, which at this point in time, I think they have lead in the paint. Please an you help me test the items, please advise. Thank you, Patricia
