When tested with a high-precision XRF instrument, the Melissa & Doug Jumbo Triangular Crayons (pictured above) had the readings listed below (broken out by color of crayon). All tests on each color crayon were repeated multiple times, in order to confirm the accuracy of the testing. Test results reported here on this blog are science-based, replicable, and accurate – within the limits of the specific testing methodology [i.e. consumer goods testing using a high-precision XRF instrument specifically designed and calibrated for testing consumer goods for metals down to single digit parts per million]. The results I focus on for accuracy (in repeating tests) are any detected amounts of heavy metal toxicants – including Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, Antimony and Mercury. This is the same testing methodology used by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to help ensure children’s products are safe to be sold in the United States today.
Truly independent consumer goods testing…
With ten crayons (each tested multiple times, each time with a three-minute test) – a box of crayons like this takes me a full (long) day to test and write up. I am not paid to do this work by any company or corporate-funded grant. The funds to help cover the costs of the testing and reporting come from two sources: #1) advertising income on this website (about one penny per page view on a good day!); #2) direct contributions from my readers in support of this work; the testing I do, and the results I report here on the blog are truly independent and free of any institutional or corporate influence. If you are in a position to help support this testing, click here for ways to contribute (and ways to hire me to help your family or your community.) In these uncertain times even contributions of $5 or $10 make a difference.

Hello.
Thank you so very much. I do have a question. You said these are “non detect” for heavy metals however toys should be under 90 ppm for lead ans these are all above that ? Can you please explain.
Thank you

Thanks! What are the safe levels?

Hi Tamara! 🙂
I see that Melissa & Doug makes these same triangular crayons but in a 24 pack. Would it be safe to say those are also toxicant free? (I don’t want to make any assumptions and would rather be safe than sorry.)
PS – Thank you so much for your incredible work!
