#LeadFree: 6 oz clear glass Ball brand mason jar

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

Small 6oz Ball brand clear glass canning jar, lid and band.  Newly purchased in 2017. Tested with an XRF instrument.  “Non-Detect” (negative) for lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd.) We use Ball brand canning jars (of all sizes) every day in our home. While the lids are free of the toxicants listed above they are still coated in plastic and have other issues – fortunately there are quite a few lid alternatives out there (and it is my understanding that the new Ball brand canning jar lids are now BPA-free.)

  1. Thank you Tamara for the great work that you do! I’m considering using glass jars for storing breast milk and was wondering which of these you think would be better.

    – the Ball Brand Glass Storage Jars with Plastic Caps (I think this is the same product that you wrote about here, https://tamararubin.com/2017/10/ball_baby)

  2. Hello Tamara!
You are a powerhouse of information. Thank you for all of your time and efforts to share on this medium.
Have you tested the amber colored ball jars? Amber glass blocks 99% of harmful UV rays Is how it is advertised.

  3. Hi Tamara,
We love Ball jars but don’t want canning lids for everyday use. Do you have any recommendations for single lids for Ball jars?

Or, other glass jars with single lids that are lead and BPA free (if lid is plastic)? The purpose is to store dry things like flour, sugar, etc

    Thanks

    1. Any recommendations for Lids that fit the ball jars that are safe and lead free?

Are the ball lids bpa free?

  4. Hi Tamara! Do you have any information regarding the old blue Ball canning jars? Or any other brand of modern/old canning jars? Are modern Ball jars the only safe option?

  5. Many, many thanks Tamara! I searched “Red Wing Bowls” as well but didn’t see a post regarding them specifically. I was told that the old versions used a zinc glaze. Any leads? I have the pure white with fat upper rim. No additional markings or colors.
