A (Not So) Quick Note From Tamara Rubin

The greenwashing with this company is BEYOND!

We sent this SALTT Clean Slate Electrolyte Drink Mix (pictured above) in to an independent third party lab to have it tested for Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic and Mercury  — and while it tested positive for an anticipated  (not-out-of-the-ordinary) amount of Lead (similar to what we have found in many other electrolyte products, in the double digit parts per billion range), it also tested positive for an extremely high and very concerning amount of Arsenic.

This is one of the few times where the technicians at the lab we work with were so surprised by how high the lab test result was (in this case – specifically the lab test result for Arsenic) that they contacted us for clarification about the product / ingredient profile and other background information, so they could make the decision to re-test the product to confirm the results.

In response I did some additional background research into the company and their claims, and was just floored by the nature of their marketing spin and greenwashing related to this heavily-Arsenic-contaminated electrolyte product.

Data Point #1) Where does this product come from?
Sourcing is everything really!

A preliminary inquiry into the company revealed that they harvest their salt from the Great Salt Lake in the State of Utah. They are very public about this on their website. They tout this as a beneficial attribute / quality of their business and their product. The Great Salt Lake is a body of water that is very well documented as being heavily Arsenic contaminated — contaminated to the point of presenting an airborne Arsenic exposure concern for the people, plants, animals, and soil in the area.

  • On a recent cross-country drive when I happened to have my XRF instrument with me (en-route to doing some work on the East Coast), we stopped at the Great Salt Lake and — for fun — tested the soil / sand around the edges. In doing so I confirmed personally that the Arsenic levels were obviously as concerning as the research I had recently read (with readings in the double digit ppm range, noting that 1 ppm = 1,000 ppb).
    • Pro Tip – If a product (or a source of an ingredient) might test positive for a heavy metal at a level that can be detected with an XRF instrument, then that is not something that should be consumed by human beings.
  • Recent research into the drought concerns in the Salt Lake City, Utah area (research with a focus on the lack of sustainability of the current local water resources – specifically related to the fact that the local municipalities’ current water management systems / water availability will quickly  — and in the very near future — not be able to keep up with the needs of the growing population in the area of Salt Lake City) has highlighted the potential human health costs of general environmental Arsenic contamination in the region due to the water scarcity issues.
    • As the Great Lake dries up — as the shores of the lake become exposed to sun, temperature fluctuations, and wind — Arsenic and other toxicants in the soils that were previously under water are becoming an airborne toxicant hazard (think: breathing a dose of Arsenic with each breath you take — on hot and dry days especially) for the families living in the region — likely presenting long-term heath complications for near-future generations related to this airborne Arsenic exposure.
    • Here’s a link to one article that discusses this, the title of this Smithsonian Magazine article — from January 2023 —  is “Drying Great Salt Lake Could Expose Millions to Toxic Arsenic-Laced Dust”
    • Here’s a link to a second article on the subject. This article is dated April 2026 and was published on Utah State University’s website, with the title: “New Research: Toxins from Great Salt Lake Dust Absorbed by Plants, Soils, Human Bodies”

Data Point #2) The Company’s Own Published Lab Report:

After reflecting on what I already knew related to the Great Salt Lake’s toxicity issues (specifically with Arsenic) I undertook an additional layer of inquiry related to this product and brand by digging around on their website. It was there that I quickly found their own published lab report for the exact product we tested (see screenshot directly below). They might have won brownie points for testing their product and publishing the reports, however they quickly lost any gain by the greenwashing and marketing spin they applied to their interpretation of these results. Below I have published their lab test results as a screenshot taken on my computer — a screenshot with the date and time of the capture at the top of the image.

The document in the screenshot below shows that the product was lab tested by SALTT – the manufacturer – in March of 2026 (four months before the batch we tested).

  • Their own internal lab report for this product shows 663 parts per billion (ppb) Arsenic and 14 ppb Lead.
  • Our lab report showed 14.7 ppb Lead and 920.3 ppb Arsenic
  • Our lab report showed nearly 50% more Arsenic than their lab report for the same product.
  • Both the Lead and Arsenic levels between the two reports fall within an anticipated range that one could expect  – in terms of the toxicant contamination levels that one might find in a natural salt based product — for two different batches of a product with a primary ingredient derived from the same source.
  • LEAD: 14.7 is nearly exactly the same (statistically) as 14.0
  • ARSENIC: each of the separate tests are in the high triple digit ppbs, each approaching 1 ppm, which is statistically similar in range.
  • Lead Safe Mama, LLC’s full original lab report for this SALTT product be found at the very bottom of this article.

Screenshot below is from the SALTT website
Data Point #3) What is the company saying about this product, given they are obviously AWARE of the Arsenic Levels?

This is where things get ABSURD — truly ABSURD.

SCREENSHOT STATEMENT #1

  1. The above sentence is a screenshot taken from the statements published on their website.
  2. Prop 65 Levels are outdated as they are often misunderstood / misinterpreted.
  3. Consumers misread the levels noted in Prop 65 statements as “safe daily exposure limits” of ingested carcinogens — carcinogens for which there is consensus in the scientific and medical communities that there is no safe level of exposure.
  4. In reading their packaging, I do not believe SALTT is taking into account consumers who may use multiple servings over the course of a day (in order to make the prop 65 compliance determination).
  5. Based on SALTT’s published calculations  — corrected by the amount of Arsenic identified with our independent, third-party lab testing of their product, which found nearly 50% more Arsenic than they previously identified —  two or three “servings” of their product could possibly result in a user exceeding the (outdated) Prop 65 limits for daily Arsenic consumption.
  6. How many people might take 2 or 3 or more of these packets throughout the course of a day? Please comment below with your answer to that — I have never used electrolyte powders so I do not know what is most common.
  7. KEY POINT: Prop 65 limits are NOT “recommended daily doses”, they are levels to avoid approaching entirely if possible, not levels to “fall just below” (and not to be interpreted as a health-protective measure)

SCREENSHOT STATEMENT #2

We tested raisins (organic raisins from Whole Foods), and they tested positive for 7 ppb Lead. So the above statement is also objectively misleading (if not outright false). I am not sure where they sourced this data. Here’s our raisin lab report – link.

SCREENSHOT STATEMENT #3

This is ENTIRELY false.

Sensitive lab tests done by an independent lab (both theirs and ours) show significant and concerning amounts of Arsenic  (by no interpretation are these small levels of Arsenic) — higher than what we have identified in any other unsweetened electrolyte product to date. Check out the comparative chart below (and continue reading below).

In fact the SALTT product had nearly TWENTY NINE TIMES the amount of ARSENIC found in the brand with the next highest Arsenic level… Said another way: that is  a level that  is 2,867% of the Arsenic found in the brand with the next highest level of Arsenic — for similar products tested to date through the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative.  You can find our full  original lab report for the SALTT product below – at the very bottom of this article, and our most recently updated comparative chart  showing lab test results for the electrolytes we have tested, can be found here.]

SCREENSHOT STATEMENT #4 – Image Below

SALTT actually JUSTIFIES the presence of high levels of Arsenic in their powdered electrolyte product with so many absurdist statements on their website – statements truly (seemingly) intended to confuse, misdirect and mislead (continue reading below to see those statements, and then read below the image).

I want to reiterate here that the amount of Arsenic we identified in this SALTT electrolyte product is the HIGHEST LEVEL of ARSENIC that we have found in ANY electrolyte product that we have tested to date with independent, third-party lab testing. In our opinion (given the science and the facts), a manufacturer’s attempt at justifying this level of Arsenic contamination verges on criminal — especially given the intention behind an electrolyte product is:

1.) that the product is BENEFICIAL for Human Health
and
2.) that a powdered electrolyte drink mix is specifically designed to carry the “minerals” (which includes Lead and Arsenic  in this case) efficiently to your entire body — organs, muscles, etc. So basically the design of the product creates a pathway for distribution of the Arsenic to your whole body — and Arsenic is a known carcinogen.

From Cancer.org:

In conclusion?
SCREENSHOT STATEMENT #5

ANSWER  – In Short: THEY ARE NOT!

I plan on reporting this SALTT electrolyte product to the FDA and to the State of California office of Prop 65 compliance, given both the Arsenic levels and the marketing claims made by the company. If you would like to join me in doing so, here’s the FDA Complaint link (please feel free to include the link to this article with your report OR use the lab report at the bottom of this page with your report) – NOTE: complaints from consumers who have purchased and used a particular product carry a lot more weight than reports from organizations like Lead Safe Mama, LLC: https://www.fda.gov/safety/report-problem-fda/consumer-complaint-coordinators

I would like to encourage anyone who has been taking this product (especially if they have been using it on a regular basis) to ask their doctor about getting a heavy metals panel test (either a urine test or blood test) to determine if they test positive for a concerning level of Arsenic. It is best to do this right away as Arsenic levels in the body can lower quickly once you have stopped taking a product — however that does not necessarily correlate to an outcome indicating the previous Arsenic exposure has not caused harm. You can read more about that here.

  • It is important to note here that the relevant (directly relevant or tangentially relevant) regulatory limits that do exist for toxicant contamination of foods and supplements do not generally have heavy metals total content limits that are protective of human health.
  • The few regulatory limits that have been set for heavy metals contamination of foods and supplements have been set more with the intention and goal of being protective of industry — protecting manufacturers from being held liable for making and selling products contaminated with heavy metals.
  • In most cases – as of the date of publishing this article –  any regulatory limits that have been set are also not true “regulatory limits” (limits above which manufacturers might be sanctioned or fined), but are instead identified using the term “suggested guidelines” by the FDA (or other relevant regulatory agencies), so that even if a product exceeds these limits it is not automatically grounds for sanctions or fines—  or even  a product recall.
Please scroll down, the full original lab report for this product is below the shareable social media graphics and our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

Who paid for testing and reporting on this product?

Testing & reporting for this product was funded by a generous sponsor.

The sponsor who funded this testing is a representative of a company working on developing and manufacturing a cleaner (and possibly the cleanest? only time will tell!) electrolyte powder. This company has helped us cover the costs of testing and reporting on several  electrolyte product in an effort to identify both the range of contamination in these products and what might be possible if one was to shoot for creating the cleanest product on the market.

This is the kind of corporation we LOVE to work with in a consulting capacity — companies truly trying to do better, companies trying to actually create safer products (instead of just covering the toxicity of their products with marketing spin and bought-out influencer campaigns). I cannot wait to see where this inquiry goes — and if it actually results in a cleaner product that I can personally recommend to one of my adult kiddos (who relies on supplementation with electrolytes to help with a chronic medical condition).

If you would like to see more laboratory test results for popular products you use or consume – including products for which we have not otherwise raised the full funds to cover our costs to test and report on the product –  please make a contribution in support of our work if you are in a position to do so.  Here are the possible ways to send support:

All articles on Lead Safe Mama dot com are ad-free!

We share the following for full transparency – as we do with essentially everything regarding our work! Per the graphic above, as of August 04, 2026, 723 paid Patreon members contribute a combined $2,994.00 per month (an average gift of $4.14 each). Our short-term  goal is reaching $3,300 in monthly Patreon gifts (a.s.a.p.), which is equivalent to about 797 members giving our average gift of just $4.14 each to help offset some of the critical revenue we have given up by canceling our Mediavine advertising contract in early-2026.

That decision (giving up our advertising contract) made all Lead Safe Mama articles easier for you to read, freeing the entire website from randomly served up in-article and pop-up ads! Please consider joining us with a gift of at least $4.14 a month, or whatever you can afford — we just need about 74 more Patreon members to join us at this level to meet our current goal. Thank you for considering this request!

While Lead Safe Mama, LLC is a community collaborative organization (we depend on our community to direct us in choosing which products to test and also to help us cover the costs of testing and reporting for those products), we are not a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization so gifts in support of our work are not classified as tax-deductible gifts to charity.

How does this testing and reporting work in general?

  1. With few exceptions, products are normally nominated for testing by our online community. You can learn more about the nomination process at this link.
  2. Testing and reporting for many nominated products is funded through dedicated GoFundMe campaigns, while some of these costs are covered by generous contributions from individual sponsors (and occasional testing and reporting is paid for by product manufacturers – a point we always disclose when relevant).
  3. We also frequently test important and/or high-interest products — like the one reported on in this article — before funding is secured, and we request and welcome contributions to help cover those costs, making it possible for us to continue this important work.
  4. In every case, we purchase products for testing either directly from the manufacturer’s website, or from a local brick and mortar store, or from the manufacturer’s store on Amazon.
    • We are always very careful to make sure we only purchase authentic products for testing (never counterfeit products).
    • We don’t accept products sent to us by the manufacturers for testing, we always purchase through regular retail channels to make sure we get a randomly selected sample of the product.
  5. In a clean environment (which has been confirmed to be free of ambient toxicants that may impact test results in any way), we decant the product directly into medically sterile containers (containers which are purchased from a medical supply company and are sealed, sterile, and individually packed to preserve sterility).
    • We submit products in this way (vs. in their original packaging) to eliminate the potential for any real or perceived bias from the lab.
      • Note: We did experience some lab-related bias early on in our initiative (2024) that contributed to our choice to switch labs to prevent that from happening again.
    • We keep samples of each tested product in storage for six months or longer in case the manufacturer challenges our test results and we need to provide any evidence related to the product, purchase information, or packaging of the product.
  6. Batches of products are processed for testing between two and three times each month and hand delivered to the lab for testing (the lab we are currently using as our primary lab is located in the Portland, Oregon metro area).
    • We have been consistently testing 20 to 30 products each month over the past two years.
    • Products are submitted to the lab with paperwork that includes a word or phrase code to identify what the product is, without including brand-specific information for that product — for example “sensitive toothpaste”, without including the brand or flavor of the toothpaste.
  7. Lab reports are then published in full here on this website, along with an article that gives some context to the test results when relevant. The full original lab report is always included at the very bottom of each article.
    • The lab report is the specific lab test results for a single sample of the product.
    • The testing and reporting we do is NOT serving-sized based, as all relevant federal agencies agree with the consensus in the scientific and medical communities that there is no safe level of Lead exposure and serving-size based metrics for evaluating Lead exposure concerns are therefore outdated and not relevant.
    • We report the results of all of the testing we do in Parts Per Billion (ppb). Parts per billion measurements of the presence of a toxicant apply to any amount of that product (any serving size or quantity of a product).
      • For example if a product tests positive for 1,500 ppb Lead this means that one teaspoon of that product would have 1,500 ppb Lead and one cup of that product would also have 1,500 ppb.
      • The ppb  measurement unit is similar to using a percentage and is applicable to any quantity of the noted product.
      • Said another way: 1% of any measured amount of any product can be applied to any measured amount of that product regardless of the size of that measured amount.
  8. Lab test results for products tested through the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative typically and consistently match the lab test results of the same products when the manufacturer tests and publicly reports on the testing of their products, however most manufacturers of consumable products deceptively report their test results in Parts Per Million (ppm), not ppb — making the toxicant levels found in their products seem less concerning (because they are effectively using the wrong unit of measure).
    • One PPM is the same as 1,000 PPB. [More on that here.]
    • Products that may be ingested by humans  (intentionally ingested – like food – or accidentally ingested – like lipstick, toothpaste, and sunscreen) should be evaluated for the presence of toxicants down to single digit parts per billion levels in order to evaluate safety.
    • PPM evaluation of toxicant concerns in ingested products is not sufficiently precise enough of a measurement to determine safety (or lack thereof) for ingested products.
  9. Here is our budget for testing and reporting on a single product.
    • Our costs include both the cost for testing and for reporting on the test results — as well as an allocation of overhead costs specifically related to the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative
  10. Our full list of published and pending lab reports is available here — this landing page is updated frequently, so bookmark it and check back periodically.

Tamara Rubin is a multiple-federal-award-winning independent advocate for childhood Lead poisoning prevention and consumer goods safety, and a documentary filmmaker. She is also a mother of Lead-poisoned children (two of her four sons were acutely Lead-poisoned in 2005).

A “spacer graphic” like the one above can be found in each of our articles that include the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. The graphic differs depending on which version of the list is below it. The Leprechaun with Shamrock graphic above (with the pink border) is our newest spacer for the March 2026 update of this Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. If the graphic is different when you see this list in any article (a pumpkin, sun, leaf, rainbow, flower, turkey, Christmas ornament, or shamrock), that means it is an earlier version of the Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. We will be updating this list again in the summer of 2026 – to include all of our newly identified lab-tested safer choices!

While the date of the list, as it was last updated, is included in the text below it, we also wanted to introduce the visual tool that we use to identify the latest version of our lab-tested safer choices list. Lead Safe Mama team members strive to update the list with the current spacer graphic on all older articles, indicating that the most recent list of safer choices is below. However, they may not have had a chance to update every copy yet. Please be patient! Thank you.

Below you will find the most up-to-date version of our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List — current as of the date of publishing this article.

The list below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) for which the lab reports showed “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention).

  • This list is not meant to be a list of the only foods or supplements or personal care products you can buy that are safe — it is meant to demonstrate that products like these can test clean — and we – as consumers – don’t need to settle for contaminated products and foods.
  • These 120+ product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of concerns for heavy metals contamination).
  • The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for each specific product. To see the full, original lab report for any of these products, type the brand or product name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com and scroll down to the bottom of the related article. The original lab report can always be found at the very bottom of each related article. Most of our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
    • This landing page is updated weekly (most weeks) and is a good page to bookmark and check back on periodically if you want the latest test results.
  • Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted in the list below (and on all of our related articles). Other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results.
    • Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.
    • Test results are PRODUCT SPECIFIC, not BRAND SPECIFIC.
      • One should never assume that all products from a specific brand are clean just because one or more products from that specific brand came back with clean test results.

Products on our “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” list are retested periodically (annually if possible, or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean (non-detect for all, or safe-by-all standards) with a second round of lab analysis, it is removed from the list. If you have questions about a product that was removed from this list, please use the search bar at the top of the page to see more on that product, including its most recent test results. Products previously on this list that have since been removed are also noted at the very bottom (three products currently fall in that category).

Not A “Recommended Products List”

In general this list should not be seen as a list of product recommendations. This list is — instead — simply and expressly a list of products that tested clean (non-detect for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic) when sent in to third party independent labs for scientific testing.

Some examples:

  • As a mother of a child with reactive airway disease, I would NEVER under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES recommend the regular use of any essential oil products, yet there is an essential oil product in this list.
  • I personally don’t take any supplements and believe the entire supplement industry is just a money grab — yet there are quite a few supplements on the list below (because they were nominated for testing by all of you!) You will never ever find me recommending a supplement product.
  • I don’t use sunscreens and would never recommend a particular sunscreen. The two sunscreens that tested clean for heavy metals are chemical sunscreens, so that is also problematic for reasons outside of the heavy metals concerns, yet they are included on the list below.

What you choose to do with the information in this list is up to you! All of the products in this list were nominated for testing by members of the greater Lead Safe Mama online community.

It is extremely rare that we — here at Lead Safe Mama, LLC — go out of our way to recommend specific products. We have however added a section of products we would expressly “not recommend” because of bad reviews, health concerns, and negative feedback from the community. These products are still on our lab tested safer choices list as readers still may choose to use them if they are looking for a product in that category (given they had clean test results when tested for heavy metals).

“Lab Tested Safer Choices”
Not currently recommended

These are products that tested clean (across the board) when tested for heavy metals (so they also demonstrate that the levels we are striving for through this movement are achievable), but they are otherwise products that we (here at Lead Safe Mama, LLC) specifically do not recommend for reasons outside of heavy metals testing concerns.

For more information, please read our related articles specific to the products (enter the product name in the search bar at the top of any page of our website, or look for the product image on this landing page – and click through to the article), and do your own research before choosing these products. Reason products may be on this list: excessive plastic packaging, predatory subscription model for purchasing, consistently bad product reviews. You may still choose to purchase these products, no one is going to judge you! Now you know they are free of heavy metals (or were free of heavy metals when they were last tested!) We do not plan on re-testing these particular products given the considerations noted above.

Section #22
Products Removed from the Above “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” List Due To Re-Test Results

The three products in the numbered list below were previously on the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List, but were removed after 2025 retesting found traces of toxicants present.

In each case (for the three products noted below), the retests detected very low levels of toxicants — consistent with the idea that these products are still relatively cleaner choices compared to similar items in their categories. However — even though these products could still be classified as “cleaner” by nearly every standard — we only include products on the list above if the most recent lab results for that product show non-detect levels for all four metals we test for (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic), or “safe by all standards” for Arsenic levels below 10 ppb with no other metals detected. So while these three products tested positive for very low levels of toxicants with the most recent round of lab testing, they no longer meet our standards to remain on our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

You can read more about these products and see the most recent lab test results for each in the articles linked below:

  1. One Degree Organics Sprouted Rolled Oats, yellow bag (Made in Canada) — Link to May 2025 Retest
  2. Jovial Organic All-Purpose Einkorn Flour (Made in Italy)Link to August 2025 Retest
  3. DeathWish Ground Coffee, Espresso Roast Link to September 2025 Retest
