A Quick Note From Tamara Rubin

Wow. Just. Wow!

As you may have heard, Hiya Health appears to be the company that is behind the orchestrated smear campaign attempting to discredit our work (you can read more about that here – I never expected my picture to be featured in The Hollywood Reporter!)

Given all that this smear campaign has cost us (both me personally, and Lead Safe Mama, LLC — this little-business-that-could), we thought it would be interesting to retest the Hiya Kids Daily Multivitamin product to see if the test results had changed since we first tested the product back in September of 2024.

Lead Safe Mama, LLC’s 2024 reporting of the lab test results for the Hiya Kids Daily Multivitamins product (in the yellow bottle) appears to have been the spark that set off the attacks on our work, as  – it would seem – Hiya wanted to keep the independent, third-party laboratory testing we coordinate (testing done using accredited / certified labs in the United States) from seeming credible because they were likely concerned that our reporting of the fact that their children’s vitamins tested positive for Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic might jeopardize the $205,000,000 sale of 78.8% of their business to Usana (the billion dollar annual sales supplement company that – at the time we published this original lab report, link –  was planning to buy a 78.8% interest in their business). Allegedly.

Well…. Hiya’s sale to Usana – for $205,000,000 –  did go through (in December of 2024. It is our understanding (based on the public reporting that has been done on the subject) that Hiya’s founders (including Darren Litt, whose wife is Benita Litt – Meghan Markel’s best friend(!)} still own 21.2% of the business.

Here’s a link with details on the $205,000,000 sale.

Of course in light of all that has been reported on the smear campaign* so far this year, the Lead Safe Mama online community really wanted to know if Hiya (or their new parent company) had actually done anything to clean up their children’s vitamins products since our original reporting in 2024 (or if they had simply focused on throwing money at “the Lead Safe Mama problem”, in an effort to make our legitimate, replicable, scientific findings “go away”).

  • *Re: “all that has been reported on the smear campaign”…
  • Specifically there has been extensive reporting by multiple news outlets (including The New York Times, The Hollywood Reporter and others) of smear campaigns similar to the one targeting our work (as well as reporting on the legal filings related to these smear campaigns, filings through which forensics investigators have determined these campaigns are all likely linked – as they appear to have all been orchestrated by the same people).
  • This reporting has cited notable damning evidence supporting the likelihood that members of this “Fixer PR Team” that Hiya appear to have hired to discredit us (a team of people associated with TAG PR – including Melissa Nathan, Jed Wallace, and Katie Case) also appear to have been hired by Jeffrey Epstein (yes, THE Jeffrey Epstein!) to smear his victims.
  • This reporting (and the related legal matters) has also has cited evidence that this same “Fixer PR firm” that was likely hired by Hiya was also hired  to boost the reputations of rich and famous rapists, pedophiles, convicted sex traffickers and abusers — all (apparently) – like Hiya, wanting to destroy the reputations of women who they felt threatened their reputations and their livelihoods.
  • The evidence also suggests that it is highly likely that TAG PR was hired by Darren Litt specifically  – possibly via a referral from Justin Baldoni to Darren’s wife Benita – as Benita and Justin appear to be friends and Justin also appears to have hired this same company to create a smear campaign – around the same time, Fall of 2024 – in an attempt to discredit Blake Lively’s sexual harassment claims against him.

If all of this is true (as the evidence would suggest that it is), it is very interesting that a company making children’s vitamins would choose to align itself with “Reputation Fixers” who are known to be defenders of the likes of convicted rapists / sex traffickers (including the likes of the Alexander Brothers!)

Making the effort to clean up and improve a product is what most ethical / reputable manufacturers of children’s vitamins (who care  about their customer base)would do in response to our published test results, but that does not appear to be what happened in this particular case. Hiya appears to care more about their bottom line than the children who consume their heavy metals contaminated multivitamins.

Based on this new (October 2026) round of independent, third-party laboratory testing for the Hiya Kids Daily Multivitamin product, it does seem possible that there may have been some changes in ingredient sourcing or formulation of this specific Hiya product since we first tested them — as the Arsenic and Cadmium levels are lower than when we tested them back in 2024 (see the comparative chart below, as well as the full original lab report which can be found at the very bottom of this article). However this possible “reformulation” (or perhaps it is  just a toxicant contamination range resulting from batch specific variation across multiple years), is also showing that these Hiya Kids Daily Multivitamins (which we purchased directly at Target for this October 2026 round of testing), had an increase in the level of Lead (increase over what we found in 2024) of 80.67%.

So yes our headline is completely accurate and scientific in asserting that these Hiya Kids Daily Multivitamins (at least the batch we tested in October of 2026) now come with “80% more Lead”  than what we found with independent, third-party laboratory testing of this same product back in 2024.

  • The Lead level we identified in this product back in September of 2024 was 30 ppb.
  • The Lead level identified in this year’s October 2026 retest was 54.2 ppb.

The context for these numbers – discussed in more detail below – is that all federal agencies have published statements in agreement with the consensus in the scientific and medical communities that there is no safe level of lead exposure for children – especially ingested exposure – and even more so, exposure that may occur daily as is anticipated with a children’s multivitamin that is supposed to be taken daily.

The scientific and medical communities specifically recommended (back in 2021) that products marketed and sold with the intention that they would be ingested by young children should be considered to have a concerning level of Lead if they test positive for five parts per billion (5 ppb) Lead or higher. Through this recommendation (as part of the “closer to zero” initiative) 5 ppb was recommend to be the proposed “action level” in 2021 (more on that below). 54.2 parts per billion is 1,084% of this proposed action level.

Product manufacturers will be the first to tell you that the proposed action level was not passed into law back in 2021, however it is important to realize that this happened due to pressure by industry lobbyists who asserted that the 5 ppb Action Level was unreasonable and not achievable. Through the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative we have identified over 150 products (across all different types of products that may be ingested by children) that meet that “less than 5 ppb”  goal, clearly demonstrating that the proposed 5 ppb Action Level is – in fact – entirely achievable (dispelling the argumentation pushed by manufacturers!) Most of those products are listed below (scroll down) in our Lab Tested Safer Choices List – if you would like to see the types of products we have found that tested non-detect across the board when tested for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic.

It is also important to highlight here that this amount of Lead in a children’s vitamin (54.2 ppb) is entirely legal. There are currently no truly health-protective limits or guidelines set for heavy metals contamination of children’s supplements (nor are there appropriate limits for contamination levels in supplements made for adults for that matter).

We’re looking forward to testing and reporting on more Hiya children’s supplements (our goal is to retest the whole range of their products) and we would like to encourage you to contribute to this GoFundMe campaign (link below) if you are interested in seeing more of their products tested – tested with independent, third-party, community-funded, replicable, scientific testing done by a certified laboratory! Thanks in advance! Contributions in any amount are very much appreciated by everyone in the Lead Safe Mama online community – which includes a worldwide readership of about 2.3 million people!: https://gofund.me/6c074d987

While we did launch a GoFundMe to cover our costs of testing and reporting on this product, funding was not fully covered by designated gifts .  If you would like to join us in supporting the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative, contributions to help cover the costs of testing and reporting for this and other products (testing and reporting that was otherwise not funded) can always be made via a product specific GoFundMe link (like the one above), via Patreon or via our general fund GoFundMe campaign, thank you!  Here’s our GoFundMe link: https://gofund.me/c52e93aa8

Please scroll down, the full original lab report for this product is below the shareable social media graphics and our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

More ways you can help:

#1) Would you like to have more of an influence on which products we test and report on?
If you sign up to contribute $25.00 or $50.00 a month via Patreon in support of the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative, then — after you have contributed $150.00 via your monthly support (after either three months of contributions or six months of contributions, depending on which level you choose) — you get to choose a product that we will test and report on (we will use other undesignated gifted funds to subsidize our remaining costs for testing and reporting).

The above opportunity is a fun new(ish) Patreon membership opportunity that gives our community members more influence and a greater voice in what we choose to test and report on (while also helping to increase our base income – funds we can rely on each month to help cover Lead Safe Mama, LLC’s operating costs). Please consider supporting our work at this level — here’s our Patreon Membership link: https://www.patreon.com/leadsafemama/membership

Most of the testing and reporting we do is funded by gifted support from the public (you!) — thank you everyone!

PATREON BONUS! Lead Safe Mama Patreon members are among the first to be sent the link to our articles and lab reports as soon as they’are published, and that alone is a great reason to join us on Patreon! Patreon gifts of any amount make a difference so please do support the work at any level that is comfortable for you — our current average paid member contributes about $4.50 per month [just four dollars and fifty cents], but you can also join us on Patreon for free!

All articles on Lead Safe Mama dot com are ad-free!

Per the graphic above, as of October 31, 2026, 701 paid Patreon members contribute a combined total of $3,155.00 per month (an average gift of $4.50 each). Our short-term  goal is reaching $3,300 in monthly Patreon gifts (a.s.a.p.), which is equivalent to about 734 members giving our average gift of just $4.50 each to help offset some of the critical revenue we have given up by canceling our advertising contract in 2026. The decision to give up our advertising contract made all Lead Safe Mama articles easier for you to read, freeing the entire website from randomly served up in-article ads and pop-up ads!

Please consider joining us with a gift of at least $4.50 a month, or whatever you can afford — we just need about 33 more Patreon members to join us at this level to meet our current goal. Thank you for considering this request!

While Lead Safe Mama, LLC is a community collaborative organization (we depend on our community to direct us in choosing which products to test and also to help us cover the costs of testing and reporting for those products), we are not a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization so gifts in support of our work are not classified as tax-deductible gifts to charity.

How does this testing and reporting work in general?

  1. With few exceptions, products are normally nominated for testing by our online community. You can learn more about the nomination process at this link.
  2. Testing and reporting for many nominated products is funded through dedicated GoFundMe campaigns, while some of these costs are covered by generous contributions from individual sponsors (and occasional testing and reporting is paid for by product manufacturers – a point we always disclose when relevant).
  3. We also frequently test important and/or high-interest products — like the one reported on in this article — before funding is secured, and we request and welcome contributions to help cover those costs, making it possible for us to continue this important work.
  4. In every case, we purchase products for testing either directly from the manufacturer’s website, or from a local brick and mortar store, or from the manufacturer’s store on Amazon.
    • We are always very careful to make sure we only purchase authentic products for testing (never counterfeit products).
    • We don’t accept products sent to us by the manufacturers for testing, we always purchase through regular retail channels to make sure we get a randomly selected sample of the product.
  5. In a clean environment (which has been confirmed to be free of ambient toxicants that may impact test results in any way), we decant the product directly into medically sterile containers (containers which are purchased from a medical supply company and are sealed, sterile, and individually packed to preserve sterility).
    • We submit products in this way (vs. in their original packaging) to eliminate the potential for any real or perceived bias from the lab.
      • Note: We did experience some lab-related bias early on in our initiative (2024) that contributed to our choice to switch labs to prevent that from happening again.
    • We keep samples of each tested product in storage for six months or longer in case the manufacturer challenges our test results and we need to provide any evidence related to the product, purchase information, or packaging of the product.
  6. Batches of products are processed for testing between two and three times each month and hand delivered to the lab for testing (the lab we are currently using as our primary lab is located in the Portland, Oregon metro area).
    • We have been consistently testing 20 to 30 products each month over the past two years.
    • Products are submitted to the lab with paperwork that includes a word or phrase code to identify what the product is, without including brand-specific information for that product — for example “sensitive toothpaste”, without including the brand or flavor of the toothpaste.
  7. Lab reports are then published in full here on this website, along with an article that gives some context to the test results when relevant. The full original lab report is always included at the very bottom of each article.
    • The lab report is the specific lab test results for a single sample of the product.
    • The testing and reporting we do is NOT serving-sized based, as all relevant federal agencies agree with the consensus in the scientific and medical communities that there is no safe level of Lead exposure and serving-size based metrics for evaluating Lead exposure concerns are therefore outdated and not relevant.
    • We report the results of all of the testing we do in Parts Per Billion (ppb). Parts per billion measurements of the presence of a toxicant apply to any amount of that product (any serving size or quantity of a product).
      • For example if a product tests positive for 1,500 ppb Lead this means that one teaspoon of that product would have 1,500 ppb Lead and one cup of that product would also have 1,500 ppb.
      • The ppb  measurement unit is similar to using a percentage and is applicable to any quantity of the noted product.
      • Said another way: 1% of any measured amount of any product can be applied to any measured amount of that product regardless of the size of that measured amount.
  8. Lab test results for products tested through the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative typically and consistently match the lab test results of the same products when the manufacturer tests and publicly reports on the testing of their products, however most manufacturers of consumable products deceptively report their test results in Parts Per Million (ppm), not ppb — making the toxicant levels found in their products seem less concerning (because they are effectively using the wrong unit of measure).
    • One PPM is the same as 1,000 PPB. [More on that here.]
    • Products that may be ingested by humans  (intentionally ingested – like food – or accidentally ingested – like lipstick, toothpaste, and sunscreen) should be evaluated for the presence of toxicants down to single digit parts per billion levels in order to evaluate safety.
    • PPM evaluation of toxicant concerns in ingested products is not sufficiently precise enough of a measurement to determine safety (or lack thereof) for ingested products.
  9. Here is our budget for testing and reporting on a single product.
    • Our costs include both the cost for testing and for reporting on the test results — as well as an allocation of overhead costs specifically related to the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative
  10. Our full list of published and pending lab reports is available here — this landing page is updated frequently, so bookmark it and check back periodically.
  11. Find all our open GoFundMe campaigns for product testing here.

Our Lab Tested Safer Choices list — the result of Lead Safe Mama, LLC’s Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative, featuring products that either tested “non-detect” across the board or safe by all current and proposed standards — is available here. This list currently includes more than 120 products, with more added as we identify them. The most recent version of our Lab Tested Safer Choices List (as of the date of publishing this article) is also below — scroll down. We will be updating this list to include newly identified products in the coming days.

For those new to the work of Lead Safe Mama, LLC

Tamara Rubin is a multiple-federal-award-winning independent advocate for childhood Lead poisoning prevention and consumer goods safety, and a documentary filmmaker. She is also a mother of Lead-poisoned children (two of her four sons were acutely Lead-poisoned in 2005).

A “spacer graphic” like the one above can be found in each of our articles that include the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. The graphic differs depending on which version of the list is below it. The Leprechaun with Shamrock graphic above (with the pink border) is our newest spacer for the March 2026 update of this Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. If the graphic is different when you see this list in any article (a pumpkin, sun, leaf, rainbow, flower, turkey, Christmas ornament, or shamrock), that means it is an earlier version of the Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. We will be updating this list again in the summer of 2026 – to include all of our newly identified lab-tested safer choices!

While the date of the list, as it was last updated, is included in the text below it, we also wanted to introduce the visual tool that we use to identify the latest version of our lab-tested safer choices list. Lead Safe Mama team members strive to update the list with the current spacer graphic on all older articles, indicating that the most recent list of safer choices is below. However, they may not have had a chance to update every copy yet. Please be patient! Thank you.

Below you will find the most up-to-date version of our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List — current as of the date of publishing this article.

The list below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) for which the lab reports showed “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention).

  • This list is not meant to be a list of the only foods or supplements or personal care products you can buy that are safe — it is meant to demonstrate that products like these can test clean — and we – as consumers – don’t need to settle for contaminated products and foods.
  • These 120+ product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of concerns for heavy metals contamination).
  • The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for each specific product. To see the full, original lab report for any of these products, type the brand or product name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com and scroll down to the bottom of the related article. The original lab report can always be found at the very bottom of each related article. Most of our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
    • This landing page is updated weekly (most weeks) and is a good page to bookmark and check back on periodically if you want the latest test results.
  • Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted in the list below (and on all of our related articles). Other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results.
    • Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.
    • Test results are PRODUCT SPECIFIC, not BRAND SPECIFIC.
      • One should never assume that all products from a specific brand are clean just because one or more products from that specific brand came back with clean test results.

Products on our “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” list are retested periodically (annually if possible, or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean (non-detect for all, or safe-by-all standards) with a second round of lab analysis, it is removed from the list. If you have questions about a product that was removed from this list, please use the search bar at the top of the page to see more on that product, including its most recent test results. Products previously on this list that have since been removed are also noted at the very bottom (three products currently fall in that category).

Not A “Recommended Products List”

In general this list should not be seen as a list of product recommendations. This list is — instead — simply and expressly a list of products that tested clean (non-detect for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic) when sent in to third party independent labs for scientific testing.

Some examples:

  • As a mother of a child with reactive airway disease, I would NEVER under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES recommend the regular use of any essential oil products, yet there is an essential oil product in this list.
  • I personally don’t take any supplements and believe the entire supplement industry is just a money grab — yet there are quite a few supplements on the list below (because they were nominated for testing by all of you!) You will never ever find me recommending a supplement product.
  • I don’t use sunscreens and would never recommend a particular sunscreen. The two sunscreens that tested clean for heavy metals are chemical sunscreens, so that is also problematic for reasons outside of the heavy metals concerns, yet they are included on the list below.

What you choose to do with the information in this list is up to you! All of the products in this list were nominated for testing by members of the greater Lead Safe Mama online community.

It is extremely rare that we — here at Lead Safe Mama, LLC — go out of our way to recommend specific products. We have however added a section of products we would expressly “not recommend” because of bad reviews, health concerns, and negative feedback from the community. These products are still on our lab tested safer choices list as readers still may choose to use them if they are looking for a product in that category (given they had clean test results when tested for heavy metals).

“Lab Tested Safer Choices”
Not currently recommended

These are products that tested clean (across the board) when tested for heavy metals (so they also demonstrate that the levels we are striving for through this movement are achievable), but they are otherwise products that we (here at Lead Safe Mama, LLC) specifically do not recommend for reasons outside of heavy metals testing concerns.

For more information, please read our related articles specific to the products (enter the product name in the search bar at the top of any page of our website, or look for the product image on this landing page – and click through to the article), and do your own research before choosing these products. Reason products may be on this list: excessive plastic packaging, predatory subscription model for purchasing, consistently bad product reviews. You may still choose to purchase these products, no one is going to judge you! Now you know they are free of heavy metals (or were free of heavy metals when they were last tested!) We do not plan on re-testing these particular products given the considerations noted above.

Section #22
Products Removed from the Above “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” List Due To Re-Test Results

The three products in the numbered list below were previously on the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List, but were removed after 2025 retesting found traces of toxicants present.

In each case (for the three products noted below), the retests detected very low levels of toxicants — consistent with the idea that these products are still relatively cleaner choices compared to similar items in their categories. However — even though these products could still be classified as “cleaner” by nearly every standard — we only include products on the list above if the most recent lab results for that product show non-detect levels for all four metals we test for (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic), or “safe by all standards” for Arsenic levels below 10 ppb with no other metals detected. So while these three products tested positive for very low levels of toxicants with the most recent round of lab testing, they no longer meet our standards to remain on our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

You can read more about these products and see the most recent lab test results for each in the articles linked below:

  1. One Degree Organics Sprouted Rolled Oats, yellow bag (Made in Canada) — Link to May 2025 Retest
  2. Jovial Organic All-Purpose Einkorn Flour (Made in Italy)— Link to August 2025 Retest
  3. DeathWish Ground Coffee, Espresso Roast — Link to September 2025 Retest
