Testing Once Upon A Farm Organic Fruit & Veggie Blend [Green Kale & Apples] for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic with Independent, Third-Party Laboratory Analysis

A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

This product was purchased directly from the manufacturer’s website (Once Upon A Farm) in August 2025 and brought to the lab for testing the day the shipment arrived to us (also in August of 2025).

This Once Upon A Farm Organic Fruit & Veggie Blend in Green Kale & Apple flavor –  tested positive for a concerning level of Cadmium. This level of Cadmium is not illegal as Federal guidelines and limits for toxicants present in baby foods are simply that “guidelines” — not “enforceable regulatory standards”. The level of Cadmium present was more than 400% of the proposed action level from 2021 (see graphic below). While the levels proposed in 2021 were not passed into law, Cadmium is a carcinogen and we therefore still do have concerns about this particular product – especially given it is intended for consumption by babies.

We will report this product to the FDA (even though it is technically not a violation of any law) so they are aware of the concern as a datapoint (for this particular flavor of baby food pouch from this particular brand). We will also share this lab report and article with the manufacturer so they are aware of the concern.

This is also a good example of how different products from the same brand (even within the same product line – in this case the Once Upon A Farm Organic Fruit & Veggie Blends) may test differently (as shown by the test results for this product when compared to the test results for the  Once Upon A Farm baby food pouch that we published earlier today).

While human nature pushes us in the direction of trusting a “brand” – I always discourage brand loyalty of any kind. Brands may try to do better in general but it is rare that a brand has clean products across the board. In the end you (as a parent and as a consumer) need to be responsible for being aware of specific ingredients  that may contribute contaminants to any given product. The earlier-posted Once Upon A Farm product tested clean, but this product with Kale – did not. With this and other data we have gathered to date in testing products from this brand, I would consider it reasonable and prudent to avoid this product in this flavor and also to avoid other products from this brand that have kale as an ingredient (until we can further identify other concerning ingredients).

Contributions supporting Lead Safe Mama, LLC are always welcome but are particularly needed this month, as we are battling an operating shortfall of over $10,000 for this summer. We recently sent more than 50 (fifty!) products to the lab for testing (including several baby food pouch products) without first receiving full funding through each respective campaign to cover the costs of testing and reporting  those items. While this may seem (at first glance) like an irresponsible action from a business perspective, all of this testing was very important in helping provide critical supporting data points for our greater Laboratory Testing Initiative and the work we are planning on organizing moving forward.

To both support Lead Safe Mama, LLC and be among the first to see our new lab reports when they are published, please subscribe to our Patreon Channel (you can join us there for free or with a small monthly gift supporting our work). Can we find more safer choices?

We will continue seeking out safer choices, funding permitting. Lead Safe Mama, LLC is coordinating this independent, third-party laboratory testing as part of a community collaborative initiative. Our community (including you!) nominates what products we test and report on (here’s our instructions for how to nominate a product) and then contributes financially to help us cover the costs of that testing and reporting.

If you appreciate this information and want to support this work so we can continue publishing reports like these (always sharing the scientific data directly with the public, never behind a paywall), please consider contributing to any of the specific, not-yet-funded campaigns linked above or other related pending campaigns (helping us both identify safer choices, and report more dangerous products that you may want to avoid). Check out the link below. Thank you!

To date, we have identified 84 “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” across all product types we have tested — you can find the full list below (please scroll down).

Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention). The product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of a concern for heavy metals contamination).

The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for the specific product listed. To see the full original lab report for any of these products, type the brand name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com (and scroll down to the bottom of the related article). All our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.

Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted, and other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results. Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.

Products on our “safer choices” list are retested periodically (annually or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean, it is removed from the list.
