A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

The test results for this product are a huge disappointment for me personally – as I have eaten more than my share of this specific product in the past. The level of Lead found in this product is VERY LOW – but my personal standards and ethics (based on my solid scientific knowledge about the toxicity of Lead) dictate avoiding any and all known lead-contaminated products, especially if safer choices exist.

I am still in search of a safer organic white chocolate product (I – unlike others – have always been a white chocolate fan!) as we know this one non-organic white chocolate tested relatively clean (from a heavy metals perspective) – lab report here – so we do have scientific evidence that it is possible for companies to manufacture cleaner white chocolate products.

You might choose to use this Green & Black Organic White Chocolate product even with the low levels of Lead found. If you do so I would encourage mixing it with foods that have come back non-detect for heavy metals with our testing (for example making white chocolate milk using organic dairy products with this chocolate, or making cookies using the Jovial Organic Einkorn flour we tested – that came back as a safer choice), which would dilute / reduce the overall Lead-content of your finished product.

I do want to note that this particular white chocolate has little solid brown flecks of organic Madagascar vanilla throughout the chocolate bar, which is a characteristic that is distinctly different than the other white chocolate products we have tested. It might actually be the case that it is the dried, ground, powdered vanilla that is the ingredient contributing Lead to this product (as dried, ground spices are often Lead-contaminated).

  • As always (to repeat what has become a bit of a mantra here at Lead Safe Mama, LLC), all federal agencies agree there is no safe level of Lead exposure for human beings (especially pregnant women and children).
  • Serving size does not matter when we are talking about toxicants as potent and dangerous as Lead, Cadmium, and Mercury.
  • Lead and other heavy metals bioaccumulate in the body over time — especially with persistent, chronic/ daily exposure.
  • Lead that is ingested (in food products) is particularly concerning.

Please scroll to the bottom of the page to see the full original lab report for this product.

  • The Levels of Toxicants Found in this chocolate are 100% LEGAL.
  • Just because something is LEGAL does not mean it is ok, nor that it is actually safe for consumption by children or pregnant women.
  • Most regulatory standards were designed primarily to protect corporations from liability, not to be protective of human health (watch our documentary film linked here for more information).

If you are interested in knowing more about detox protocols to support your family’s health (in response to learning this new information about the toxicant profile of a product you have been using), please read this article first — here’s the link. Most detox protocols and potions sold are hoaxes (ineffective or even dangerous) that are a waste of money and can often result in additional Lead exposure for your family.

The full lab report for this product is at the bottom of this article.

As far as safer choices for foods, supplements, and cosmetics go (including toothpastes), we have a few lists on our food and supplement testing landing page (linked here) that you may find helpful in making safer choices for your family. We even have one dedicated to safer snack choices here. You may also find this link helpful as it takes you to our most recently updated safer choices list of 50 lab-tested safer foods, cosmetics and supplements!

Here’s the link to our landing page with ALL of the lab reports for the independent, third-party, laboratory testing Lead Safe Mama, LLC has coordinated since March of 2024 — this is also a good page to bookmark and check back on periodically (it is also always pinned at the top of the website’s Menu via the button graphic below, and the Menu can be found at the top of every page on this site).

  1. I’d be surprised to see any chocolate, particularly any with dark in it, to have lower levels of contaminants that this one. The more the dark, the higher the levels expected. Which is unfortunate from my perspective, since dark chocolate otherwise provides the most health benefits. If some company ever manages to get the toxins out of their dark chocolate product, I’d buy boxes full.
