Dr. Brite’s “Award-Winning” Strawberry Sky Children’s Toothpaste Tests Positive for Mercury, Lead, Camdium, and Arsenic

A (not-so) Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

The lab report for this Dr. Brite Strawberry Sky Kids Mineral Toothpaste speaks for itself. (To see a chart with comparative results and the full original lab report, scroll down).

I didn’t do a lot of digging into what the award is that this company won, but if you have been using this toothpaste and you know what the award is, you may want to call the agency that presented this recognition and ask for it to be revoked.

It’s 100% unconscionable for a children’s toothpaste to be sold with the level of medical greenwashing this product shows… especially when it tests positive for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic.

As always (to repeat what has become a bit of a mantra here): All federal agencies agree there is no safe level of Lead exposure for human beings (especially pregnant women and children). Serving size does not matter when we are talking about toxicants as potent and dangerous as Lead, Cadmium, and Mercury. Lead and other heavy metals bioaccumulate in the body over time with persistent chronic exposure. When a product that is positive for unsafe levels of toxicants (heavy metals) is used daily, three times a day, for YEARS (as many toothpastes are) by the same individual, the presence of toxicants becomes a very real risk to the user.

Check out the “OUR STORY” image (first image directly below) from the Dr. Brite website. It’s horrific and egregious that this company is marketing this product (ostensibly, directly or implied) as a SOLUTION to toxic products, using the co-founder’s status as a CANCER SURGEON (medical greenwashing!) to sell a toothpaste for children that tests positive for significant levels of KNOWN CARCINOGENS. This is truly outrageous. In the statement below, the company says “It became clear that there was a correlation between these personal care products and her patient’s systemic health.” SO SHE IS AWARE of the potential concern for children ingesting poisonous substances. The company claims this product comes “without the worry of harmful ingredients” yet it tests positive for LEAD, CADMIUM, MERCURY, and ARSENIC. Ridiculous. Simply ridiculous.

Please scroll down past all of the greenwashing screenshots from this company’s website to see the sharable social media graphic with the test results for this product. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the full original lab report for this product. For context related to any of the levels on the chart below, please refer to our earlier toothpaste articles as well as this page, which has our comparative chart with test results for all of the toothpaste and tooth powder products we have tested to date.

The Levels of Toxicants Found in this Toothpaste are 100% LEGAL

The levels of toxicants we found in this toothpaste are NOT illegal. Fluoride-free toothpaste is classified by the FDA as a cosmetic product. Cosmetic products are legally allowed to have up to 10,000 parts per billion Lead in them (10 ppm). The new Washington State Toxic-Free Cosmetic Act limits the amount of Lead in cosmetics to 1,000 ppb. So, the only two relevant applicable standards result in this product being considered legal by all regulatory standards. Just because something is LEGAL does not mean it is ok, nor that it is actually safe for children. These regulatory standards were designed to protect corporations from liability, not protective of human health (watch our documentary film for more information on that linked here).

In spite of the fact that this product is LEGAL per current FDA regulatory standards, we are working with the FDA by reporting these toothpaste toxicant levels. Our hope is that the FDA will take action with this new product-specific body of evidence and possibly propose new (much lower) toxicant thresholds for toothpaste — ESPECIALLY for toothpaste that is marketed for use by young children. If your child has been using this toothpaste and you have concerns related to the potential health impacts from this product, you can file a report here. If you feel you have been a victim of false advertising in using this toothpaste for your children (thinking it was a “safer” choice), consider calling your state or city attorney’s office and ask if they have anyone looking into false advertising claims on behalf of the citizens of your area (for example, the City of Los Angeles has a legal team working specifically on false advertising claims for products like these).

  1. Thank goodness we switched to the elmo one but my baby used since she was a baby, thru toddlerhood. We have at least 6 tubes of another flavor which are going straight in the trash. Heartbroken. Its so hard to know that even trying to do our best, I have put my children in grave danger.

    1. I did not edit my wikipedia article! I was just made aware of it by a reader! I don’t even have a login that I am aware of.

    2. It’s been interesting check it out tho – and seeing the bots (and others) make changes and that sort of thing. There are things that need to be corrected on it and I am not sure how to go about that however (for example my business name is wrong – My business name is not “Lead Safe Mama” – my business name is Lead Safe Mama, LLC.)

Obviously someone familiar with my work edited it – but we had 2.3 million readers in the past year – so that’s a big pool of people.

I am in France so – you can check the IPs as well, I expect it’s not a French IP.

      T

  2. There are so many things to test out, so little time and money. We are going through landmines and unknowns with what we use and eat everyday.

Have you thought about starting a citizen science project where people can submit their test results of products they tested? It could be very useful and increase the visibility on the issue.

This also will be even more important, because recently there has been the Moss Landing lithium battery fire that has been causing health problems to local residents. This location is close to where many crops are grown, especially salad greens, blueberries, artichokes, and strawberries. Soil testing nearby has already found elevated levels of various heavy metals. SimpleLab already has released tests for testing for “battery fire” exposure. You can check out more about this at: https://youtu.be/dirPsa-Uw2c?si=KWXi52M860Gyi-ct

    1. For liability considerations we need to only focus on reporting for testing we have overseen ourselves. We do this testing based on crowd-sourced nominations and crowd-funded initiatives – so it is citizen science in that way, but as we cannot guarantee chain of custody on others’ reports AND we cannot get liability insurance for the work we do (it is too controversial) we need to limit what we publish – but have expanded our scope of work over the past year with this new crowd-funded laboratory testing initiative.

  3. Hi, please consider testing Himalaya Botanique toothpaste as it is manufactured in India. It has a very pleasant clean Mint flavor.
