All the foods and supplements we sent to the lab for testing in September 2024
Published: November 7, 2024
Below is a partly abbreviated list of all the 64 foods and supplements Lead Safe Mama, LLC sent to the lab for testing in September 2024.
Funding for this testing is a community collaborative effort — Lead Safe Mama community members nominate the products and contribute to covering the cost of testing and reporting on them.
We expect to have the lab reports published for all of the remaining foods and supplements listed below in November 2024. We will link additional reports here once published.
The listing below is in alphabetical order by product name (exceptions: Costco “Kirkland” brand products can be found under “C” not “K,” and Whole Foods “365” brand items are similarly listed under “W”). We will also be writing out the full exact product name, as time permits, as we update this list.

- Lead Safe Mama, LLC sent SIXTY FOUR (64) foods and supplements to the lab in September 2024. Unfortunately, we are needing to retest many of these products (and others sent in earlier) as the Lab reports we received did not meet our standards.
- Specifically, the low threshold of detection for the four metals we are routinely testing for were not low enough to determine compliance — or lack of compliance — with the Action Levels proposed in the Baby Food Safety Act of 2021.
- Here’s what happened:
- September 14, 2024 — When we got the first round of lab reports back (for foods and supplements we sent in September), we noticed the low threshold of detection was too high and brought this to the attention of the lab network (SimpleLab).
- In response to this inquiry, we learned that SimpleLab used a different lab for this round of testing than the location that had been used previously (for most of our recent food and supplement testing).
- October 1, 2024 — SimpleLab’s team asked us to hold-off on sending any more products while they spent some time (over the course of two weeks) working to identify a specific lab that would be able to consistently meet (or exceed) our standards for low thresholds of detection for all future testing.
- Once SimpleLab identified a new specific lab, which confirmed the ability to consistently meet most of our requirements for low thresholds of detection, SimpleLab offered to retest (without an additional lab fee) some of the products that were not tested to sufficiently low levels.
- SimpleLab had to determine which of these products still had samples in storage at the lab available for retesting.
- Then, the lab had to ship those samples to the new location that agreed to test with the lower thresholds of detection.
- Throughout this process, after many emails back and forth, we were not 100% clear about how many (and which) products SimpleLab would be willing and/or able to retest without charge.
- In the end (10/9/2024), SimpleLab told us they were only able to retest 12 out of about 30 of the products that needed re-testing to meet our standards.
- October 9, 2024 — After SimpleLab located the best lab to use to help meet our standards, they set-up a new test option in their online system for “Low Level” heavy metals testing (specifically designed for the work Lead Safe Mama, LLC is heading) — and raised their prices to cover the new costs incurred as a result of this change.
- What this means is that instead of a lab test cost of $189 (directly on the SimpleLab site) or $195 (on Amazon), our new lab costs for the “Low Level” heavy metals testing of foods (for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic) is $239 per item tested.
- Please note: This new “Low Level Heavy Metals” food test is only available directly on the Simple Lab site and is not available on Amazon.
- We therefore now must pay this increased rate ($239 per test) to retest 18+ of the products we sent into the lab this September, for an unexpected additional out-of-pocket cost to Lead Safe Mama, LLC of $4,302 (plus the cost of repurchasing all the products that need new samples to be retested).
- Personal note: This has impacted our family — as the funds to pay for this retesting is coming from me personally — meaning we are not able to pay our mortgage this month.
- While this may sound petty (and I may decide to remove this comment later), I think it is important to note these changes are not without impact. It is also important to note this because the integrity of Lead Safe Mama, LLC’s work (and our commitment and obligation to the Lead Safe Mama community) is a priority for me (over even covering my mortgage!).
- Unfortunately, Lead Safe Mama, LLC is still working at a deficit each month (with a remaining historical debt related to our federal civil rights legal battle of about $270,000), although we hope that will change soon. Our business doesn’t have “extra” resources on hand to cover the financial impacts of this sort of unexpected turn of events.
- October 11, 2024: In the middle of sorting through all these technical issues related to the actual testing of these products, SimpleLab also “upgraded” their reporting system — including their downloadable lab report format.
- This resulted in another several day delay to our reporting on the lab testing results for products sent in during September due to a glitch in the formatting of these downloadable reports.
- In response to the new rate SimpleLab is charging (to achieve testing thresholds more aligned with the reference standards Lead Safe Mama, LLC uses), we have also needed to raise our fundraising goal for future lab testing initiatives accordingly to cover this increase in cost — but did not raise the goal for the 50+ not-yet-funded campaigns active when we learned SimpleLab would be raising our rate for this testing.
- This means we have about 50 products for which we are raising $50 less than what we will need to cover the cost of testing and reporting (see our budget here). This is a financial impact to Lead Safe Mama, LLC of an additional (approximate) $2,500.
- The new guaranteed/ consistent low threshold of detection from SimpleLab for each of the four metals we are testing for (Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic) is 5 ppb.
- These lab reports will therefore include low thresholds of detection that meet or exceed the proposed Action Levels for those metals, which are as follows:
- Lead: 5 ppb
- Cadmium: 5 ppb
- Arsenic: 10 ppb
- These lab reports will therefore include low thresholds of detection that meet or exceed the proposed Action Levels for those metals, which are as follows:
- Note: While these new testing limits meet-or-exceed the Baby Food Safety Act of 2021’s Action Level thresholds for Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic, they are unfortunately not able to (consistently) meet the Action Level threshold of 2 ppb for Mercury.
- As a result of the news about this remaining current low-threshold testing limitation for Mercury, we are noting in each of the relevant articles whether or not we expect the product tested may or may not be likely to have any risks for Mercury contamination (at levels below 5 ppb), based on the ingredient profile.
- In summary: This has been a bit of a nightmare! Sorry for the delay! I chalk all of this up to “growing pains” in Lead Safe Mama, LLC’s relationship with SimpleLab (as I am sure they did not expect we would so quickly grow to the point of sending 60+ products in for testing each month when they first offered free tests for six products back in March 2024)!
- While we are looking for support to help cover the operating deficit caused by this situation, we continue to be so very thankful for SimpleLab’s ongoing donation covering the lab costs for eight tests per month (resulting in eight products each month that we do not need to seek community funding for). At the new testing rate, these donations equate a value of $1,912 each month. To see all the products we have sent in as part of this pro bono testing, click here.
“WHERE ARE THE LITTLE SPOON TEST RESULTS?”
- In response to many questions about the Little Spoon products specifically, the above situation resulted in us needing to retest nine Little Spoon products we sent in, across the board.
- We re-purchased these products (so we would have fresh samples from their current product line offering), received those new samples on November 7, 2024, and again sent the samples to the lab on November 8, 2024.
- We are also asking SimpleLab to expedite the retesting of these Little Spoon products specifically (as well as some others we are retesting on our “nickel”) — especially considering we are absorbing a significant cost on our end for an error/ unexpected complication that originated at the labs.
- To check on the status of the Little Spoon products, please keep an eye on our NOVEMBER Lab testing page linked here.
- Note: The Little Spoon retesting alone is costing us $2,151 (a portion of the $4,302 noted above) in additional lab costs above and beyond our original budget, plus the cost of purchasing additional products for testing.
Thank you for your patience!

Note: We previously counted 67+ products sent in as our “Batch 5,” which mostly consisted of items sent during September, and also included some items sent in at the end of August. These products had been included in our September batch for tracking purposes as we knew we would not be getting results back until some time in September. These additional products will also be listed on our new August landing page (as we have since changed the way we are tracking things to only include items sent during that specific month), bringing the total for this list to 69 items.
