Hiya is sending out a report that CONFIRMS their low threshold of detection is not sufficient to determine safety (as far as persistent low-level/ chronic toxicant exposure for younger children especially!).*
–
Remember, the impact of Lead is CUMULATIVE. What that means is that most of the Lead they ingest stays in their body forever and the impact (symptomatic response) builds over time. To be giving children a “tiny” dose of Lead every day with their daily vitamins… to me… is a horrific scenario (did you read “Flowers in The Attic” in high school?).
–
This is why I don’t give my children vitamins and I don’t personally take any supplements.
–
I have written about this for years (supplements are contaminated and not sufficiently regulated and we need to try reverting to the ways of our ancestors and get as much of our nutrients from whole foods as possible — see here for more). We should only take supplements if we have a medical condition for which our doctor believes they are medically necessary to treat. In that rare case, we should look for pharmaceutical grade products/ prescription supplements, as they are more likely to be clean (compared to all of this snake oil, over-the-counter garbage).

*The report HIYA is sharing (pictured below) shows that their lab is detecting for heavy metals with a low threshold of detection of one part per million (1 ppm). 1 ppm is the same as 1,000 parts per billion. Ingested items (foods, beverages) are considered to be toxic/unsafe for children (by the scientific and medical community evaluating the impacts of Lead exposure) when the range exceeds parts per billion in the two digit range. Specifically, guidelines for food toxicity for children (even foods that children have in small amounts only rarely) allow for no more than 50 ppb Lead in most ingested items (taking into account almost every proposed standard out there looking at contamination in parts per billion ranges). Water is toxic for children above 1 ppb. The 2021 recommendation for baby food is that it should not exceed 5 ppb Lead. The current federal standard/ guidance is in the range of 10 to 20 ppb Lead depending on the food type.
–
LESS THAN 1.0 ppm is potentially as much as 999 ppb. Even if it were only 500 ppb, that’s a heck of a lot more than 20 ppb (even when you take into account the relatively small volume of the product being consumed daily). Items intended for consumption by children that are supposed to have HEALTH BENEFITS should not test positive for TOXICANTS (heavy metals) at any level over 20 ppb (and preferably not higher than 4 ppb!)

Here is documentation from Hiya demonstrating their internal knowledge of the fact that their low threshold of detection for some of the laboratory testing they are conducting is too high (one part per million, which is 1,000 parts per billion) — they even circled this part of the report in pink:
Here’s more documentation from Hiya demonstrating their internal knowledge of the fact their products test positive for Cadmium and Arsenic. Click the image of the first page of the report below to see the full report.

Thank you so much for this article! Can you recommend a safer multivitamin option?
Nicole W says
Also looking for a safe multivitamin!
Carissa Burk says
Smarty Pants has had the lowest heavy metal toxicant load so far (results: https://tamararubin.com/2024/08/all-u-s-federal-agencies-agree-that-there-is-no-safe-level-of-lead-exposure-for-children-smarty-pants-kids-multi-omega-gummy-vitamins-test-positive-for-lead-august-2024-lab-report/ )
HOWEVER
Tamara doesn’t recommend any vitamin or supplement products. She talks in that same post I linked to about why.
Jenny says
Why do the reports only show the MDL for arsenic and cadmium?

How informative is this!??! I would just see oh less than 1! That’s great! Not realizing the key is to look at the rest. Tamara, I’m looking into Dr. Green Life prenatals and they publish their heavy metal lab results online. I was about to purchase until I saw your article. Their results are in mcg. How can I convert? For example, their lead content is 0.185 mcg/serving size. What in the world does that even mean??? Safe or not?

I really need a calcium supplement. I have osteopenia/osteoporosis and am in my early 40s, too soon for these issues.
