#NLR = Not Lead Related!
For now, I am just making this list for fun — I may editorialize about it later, but I thought others who might be dropping a kiddo off at college might find this list helpful/ useful (as a checklist perhaps).
Avi will not have access to his own kitchen this year — he is in a dorm (on the top floor of a high-rise tower!) with just a microwave, bathroom sink, and small fridge available for storing/ preparing food (he has a meal plan with only seven meals a week, as he has special dietary needs and cannot get all the calories he requires from the offerings available through the school) — so we are needing to get creative working within those parameters.
I told my husband that we have spent about $1,000 on all of this so far. (Note: Hawaii is more expensive than other places — and this includes one mega trip to Walmart last night, plus one very big trip to Target today!) My (66-year-old) husband replied “shouldn’t the supplies to set up for school be about $100?” — LOL! So I thought this list might also be useful to share with my husband!
Note: Everything I buy for my kids is Lead-free (except the batteries)!

- Ruler
- Tape measure
- Another milk crate (to get the laundry off the floor — because of the cockroaches)

- A small wooden cutting board
That’s it for now! Note: In reviewing my receipt to make this list, I noticed I was overcharged by about $25 (for four of one thing when I only bought three, and charged for two of something when I only bought one)… gah! When you have kids underfoot and a giant shopping list, sometimes you miss these things — that’s a good reminder to always check your receipt! (I will probably go back to the store tomorrow to try to sort that out… because I have nothing better to do with my time… #sigh.)
I will likely update this over the next couple days, as we still have a few more things we need to get him!

Any chance you could link to the brand name or type? This is so helpful, thanks!

Sounds a lot like my list so many years ago! He could also get a good water filter for the tap so he can continuously have clean water (in addition to the plastic water bottles in case of lack of water). Lifestraw seems to be the upgraded PUR/Brita filter. (Says it filters lead, bacteria, mercury, PFAs, microplastics, etc.) We bought one to take with us on a trip and used it at the AirBnB when we didn’t have our reverse osmosis. Cheers!

Hi Tamara! Thank you so much for this list! I disagree though with the initial hashtag of NLR! It is LR!! 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to make this list, you’re so thoughtful of others. My oldest started kindergarten today and for some reason I’m over here reviewing a list for college dorm life ♀️.

Lol! YW!

You are so well-organized. I wonder how can you know which one has lead free when you buy them in store? I wanted to buy a beautiful teapot from the British tea company today, but then decided not to because I had no idea if it contains lead (as it was painted inside and outside with the same dark color paint). Can you please share the electric tea kettle that you bought? Thank you!
