To Whom It May Concern at the CPSC:
Back in 2018 I had an email exchange with Stephanee Synnott about this issue.
Stephanee Synnott, Ph.D.
Compliance Officer – Chemical Hazards Team
Phone: 301-504-7847
On July 30, 2018 Stephanee emailed and told me that the team lead of the Chemical Hazards Team, Dr. John Boja would be in touch with me. I never heard back from Dr. Boja or anyone else with the CPSC about the concern for Lead in baby bottles.
In 2019 I found another baby bottle painted with Lead paint (and have now found Lead in no fewer than 6 brands of baby feeding products):
And now – from this same brand (NUK) this month (June 2021) I discovered yet another baby bottle painted with very high Lead paint. The XRF detectable Lead level is over 20,000 ppm in the decorative elements on the outside of these baby bottles (exactly where babies put their hands while drinking.) The new bottles in question were purchased in June of 2021 from Amazon. The product is made in Germany but is a brand that is very popular and widely available in the United States. It is a glass bottle and, as such, chosen by many mothers as a “safer” and “less toxic” choice – so it is especially concerning to find high Lead paint in this product.
Full details here:
This issue was also written about earlier this year by a environmental group out of Germany:
I am hoping that the CPSC can finally officially weigh in on this subject.
I also wrote about it in December of 2020 with the context being that you were able to initiate a recall for a toy water gun with lower Lead levels, but not baby bottles: https://tamararubin.com/2020/12/this-nerf-super-soaker-xp20-water-gun-sold-at-target-was-recalled-but-baby-bottles-with-greater-lead-levels-were-not-why/
Please explain your rationale on this matter.
Please also let me know what I might do (as a mother of Lead poisoned children) to support any efforts you may have in progress (or any efforts you may initiate in response to this communication) to get the use of Lead in baby feeding products outlawed for good.
Perhaps now that we have a new administration we can see some responsible responsive action on this issue.
Thank you.
