Vintage Red Glass Anchor Hocking Cup

When tested with an XRF instrument the vintage red Anchor Hocking punch glass pictured here had the following readings.

  • Cadmium (Cd): 24 +/- 5 ppm
  • Bismuth (Bi): 37 +/- 9 ppm
  • Tin (Sn): 873 +/- 28 ppm
  • Copper (Cu): 574 +/- 50 ppm
  • Indium (In): 36 +/- 7 ppm
  • Titanium (Ti): 209 +/- 86 ppm

  1. Hi, another article I read specified 0.4 ppm as the safety threshold for glass containing cadmium, but your article here says 24 ppm is safe. That’s 600 times more. Could you explain please? I just acquired a set of this exact kind of cups. You have pictured and was planning to use them for a little party I’m hosting. Now I’m wondering if I should opt for some other glassware.

    1. The safety threshold is 40 ppm or 75 ppm – depending on which regulatory standard you look at (Washington State or Denmark), not “0.4” – not sure where you read that. For food the safety threshold is 4 parts per billion, but that’s for items that are ingested – not for durable goods. 4 ppb is .004 ppm.
