For those new to the Lead Safe Mama website:

Tamara Rubin is a multiple-federal-award-winning independent advocate for childhood Lead poisoning prevention and consumer goods safety, and a documentary filmmaker. She is also a mother of Lead-poisoned children (two of her four sons were acutely Lead-poisoned in 2005).

This Forbo Flooring Systems Marmoleum Textura, “Fox Cub E5236,” Glue Down flooring sample from Green Building Supply (pictured here) had the following readings when tested with an XRF Instrument:

Front surface of panel:

  • Barium (Ba): 420 +/- 129 ppm
  • Bromine (Br): 10 +/- 3 ppm
  • Zinc (Zn): 2,413 +/- 48 ppm
  • Iron (Fe): 7,125 +/- 124 ppm
  • Titanium (Ti): 3,868 +/- 329 ppm

Back burlap surface of panel:

  • Barium (Ba): 276 +/- 138 ppm
  • Bromine (Br): 10 +/- 3 ppm
  • Zinc (Zn): 1,948 +/- 41 ppm
  • Iron (Fe): 4,918 +/- 102 ppm
  • Titanium (Ti): 1,998 +/- 306 ppm
  • Note: Due to the porous nature of the material, the XRF instrument is likely reading through from the back to the front in detecting the levels found during this reading set. I expect the burlap on this side would otherwise be very low or non-detect for all (were it separated from the front surface of the tile).

Tests results are science-based and replicable. All tests are completed for a minimum of 60-seconds unless otherwise noted. Tests are repeated multiple times to confirm the results, using a freshly calibrated XRF instrument testing in consumer goods mode.

As always, thank you for reading and sharing this work.
