Things from Canada — David’s Tea Lavender Ceramic Mug: 453 ppm Lead (interior) + 86 ppm Cadmium (exterior)

Tamara Rubin is a multiple-federal-award-winning independent advocate for childhood Lead poisoning prevention and consumer goods safety, and a documentary filmmaker. She is also a mother of Lead-poisoned children (two of her four sons were acutely Lead-poisoned in 2005).


When tested with an XRF instrument, this David’s Tea Mug (sent to me from a reader in Canada in 2019) had the following readings:

On the exterior (lavender-colored) glazed surface of the mug
(a 30-second reading):

  • Lead (Pb): 48 +/- 21 ppm
  • Cadmium (Cd): 86 +/- 16 ppm
  • Mercury (Hg): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Barium (Ba): 2,386 +/- 167 ppm
  • Chromium (Cr): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Antimony (Sb): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Selenium (Se): Non-Detect / Negative

On the interior (white-colored) glazed surface of the mug
(30-second reading):

  • Lead (Pb): 453 +/- 35 ppm
  • Cadmium (Cd): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Mercury (Hg): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Barium (Ba): 597 +/- 65 ppm
  • Chromium (Cr): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Antimony (Sb): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Selenium (Se): Non-Detect / Negative
