Ola Baby 100% Silicone Soft-Tip Training Spoon Teether for Baby Led Weaning: 14 ppm Cadmium. Safe by all standards.
When tested with an XRF instrument these Olababy [Ola Baby] “100% Silicone Soft-Tip Training Spoon Teethers for Baby Led Weaning” had the following set of readings.
All tests were done for a minimum of 180 seconds (3 minutes). Results are science-based and replicable. Metals not detected by the XRF (in consumer goods mode) are not listed. All testing is done using a freshly calibrated XRF instrument.
Darker green (shorter) spoon:
- Cadmium (Cd): 14 +/- 4 ppm
- Vanadium (V): 66 +/- 10 ppm
- Titanium (Ti): 44 +/- 10 ppm
- Indium (In): 27 +/- 5 ppm
- Palladium (Pd): 5 +/- 2 ppm
- Silver (Ag): 7 +/- 3 ppm
Darker Spoon – Second Reading included:
- Cadmium (Cd): 11 +/- 4 ppm
Multiple additional three-minute readings were done to confirm the presence of Cadmium in this spoon. Finding Cadmium in silicone is not unusual as many of the medical grade silicone items I have tested in recent years have been positive for trace levels of Cadmium. Click here to see more silicone items I have tested that have been positive for Cadmium.
While this is considered a safe level of Cadmium by all standards [Washington State has a safety threshold of 40 ppm and the country of Denmark has a safety threshold of 75 ppm] on principle I don’t personally think that any amount of Cadmium (a known carcinogen) belongs in any product for use with a baby (especially for use in feeding a baby.)
Continue reading (the XRF readings for the lighter spoon) below the image.
Lighter green (longer) spoon:
- Cadmium (Cd): 11 +/- 4 ppm
- Antimony (Sb): 42 +/- 9 ppm
- Zinc (Zn): 165 +/- 14 ppm
- Bismuth (Bi): 98 +/- 8 ppm
- Vanadium (V): 73 +/- 10 ppm
- Titanium (Ti): 130 +/- 14 ppm
- Indium (In): 24 +/- 5 ppm
- Palladium (Pd): 5 +/- 2 ppm
- Silver (Ag): 6 +/- 2 ppm
Antimony was also found in some of the readings (but not all of the readings) of the two spoons. Antimony is often found in plastics (like plastic peanut butter jars) and is also a known carcinogen (in high doses with rats), but trace level persistent exposure in humans has not been studied (that I am aware of.) Here is my related post set about Antimony found in peanut butter jars.
