When tested with an XRF instrument, the Kleynimals brand toy keys (their signature original product) had the following readings. Note – all components were tested and each test was done for a minimum of 180 seconds (3 minutes). Results are science-based and replicable.
Test Results For (304 Stainless Steel) Main Body of Key Animals:
- Lead (Pb): Non-detect / Negative
- Cadmium (Cd): Non-detect / Negative
- Mercury (Hg): Non-detect / Negative
- Arsenic (As): Non-detect / Negative
- Chromium (Cr): 148,300 +/- 600 ppm
- Tin (Sn): 171 +/- 34 ppm
- Zinc (Zn): 109 +/- 54 ppm
- Copper (Cu): 4,062 +/- 306 ppm
- Nickel (Ni): 89,000 +/- 1,000 ppm
- Iron (Fe): 735,600 +/- 1,400 ppm
- Vanadium (V): 691 +/- 106 ppm
- Molybdenum (Mo): 3,622 +/- 100 ppm
- Cobalt (Co): 3,111 +/- 829 ppm
- Manganese (Mn): 14,800 +/- 800 ppm
The test results set above is typical for 304 stainless steel [a high-grade stainless alloy used in cooking pots and other applications for food use]. The main alloying metals in 304 stainless steel are Chromium, Nickel and Copper, in the ratios instantiated by this test result set. You can read more about stainless steel in this post – link.
Given these toys are free of all the common heavy metal toxicants one might typically find (e.g. in the heavily-leaded brass) in normal house keys — yet they have the attractive weight and feel of keys — I think they make a fabulous safer choice to give babies who are constantly interested in – and reaching for – mom’s/dad’s keys!
Test Results For Spacer Beads:
Also recognized (by the XRF’s Consumer Goods software module) as “SS #304”. The beads are too small to take up the full scope of the XRF, so specific individual metals readings are slightly different than the readings for the larger, flat key part of the toy. While the proportions of the main elements are typical of 304 stainless steel, in all stainless alloys there can also be certain trace metals that vary from batch to batch – which is likely why the beads tested positive for trace levels of gold and platinum! [A test on a second bead was also positive for trace levels of gold and silver, but not platinum – so in terms of the detection of trace levels of metals – test results also may vary slight from spot to spot that you test on the same item!]
[Note: For the skeptical (or just curious) amongst us, testing was done against a wooden background that was repeatedly tested and found to be non-detect for all metals, so no, these readings don’t/can’t contain any “false ‘background'” contaminants that are not part of the product.]
- Lead (Pb): Non-detect / Negative
- Cadmium (Cd): Non-detect / Negative
- Mercury (Hg): Non-detect / Negative
- Arsenic (As): Non-detect / Negative
- Chromium (Cr): 145,100 +/- 700 ppm
- Tin (Sn): 137 +/- 42 ppm
- Gold (Au): 351 +/- 160 ppm
- Zinc (Zn): 146 +/- 65 ppm
- Copper (Cu): 3,800 +/- 339 ppm

- Platinum (Pt): 532 +/- 184 ppm
- Manganese (Mn): 17,500 +/- 800 ppm
Test Results for Ring (on section without bead):
(Again, important to note, the ring does not fill up the full XRF scope, so the readings should be regarded as approximate, given the limitations of the narrow size of the sample).
- Lead (Pb): Non-detect / Negative
- Cadmium (Cd): Non-detect / Negative
- Mercury (Hg): Non-detect / Negative
- Arsenic (As): Non-detect / Negative
- Barium (Ba): 71 +/- 40 ppm
- Chromium (Cr): 16,000 +/- 100 ppm
- Bromine (Br): 8 +/- 3 ppm
- Zinc (Zn): 37 +/- 9 ppm
- Copper (Cu): 226 +/- 24 ppm
- Nickel (Ni): 3,022 +/- 51 ppm
- Iron (Fe): 46,500 +/- 300 ppm
- Bismuth (Bi): 11 +/- 4 ppm
- Vanadium (V): 81 +/- 50 ppm
Overall, I think the products from Kleynimals are a great choice for kiddos, and if I had smaller babies in my life I would definitely buy these for them.
As a #Bonus!, Kleynimals is also offering a 15% discount* to #LeadSafeMama readers with the code “leadsafemama“. Not only are all their products Lead-free, but they are also made in America by a woman-owned small business (#Win #Win #Win.)
Full Disclosure: Kleynimals is a sponsor of this website and as a benefit of their sponsorship I offered to test each of their products using XRF technology and report the test results here on my blog. Each set of test results is a full set from one test (not an average of multiple tests.) Tests were all done multiple times to confirm the levels in the one set of reported results is accurate.
As always, thank you for reading and for sharing my posts.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Tamara,
Do you have a new link for lead-free house keys?
Thanks!

The coupon code no longer works. Is there a new one?

oh – I will ask
