A Quick Note From Tamara Rubin

As has been the case with all of the other Zinc Oxide based sunscreens we have tested and reported on to date, this Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection Sensitive Skin Zinc Oxide Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 tested positive for Lead (and also Cadmium).

To see the two lab-tested safer choices (Lead-free) that we have found in the sunscreen category to date, please scroll down to the full lab tested safer choice in this article. You can also always click the green “SAFER CHOICES” button at the top of any of our articles to see the most current version of that list. Note: these two choices are safer from a heavy metals perspective, however they are chemical sunscreens an may not be appropriate for everyone.

The primary concern with Lead-contaminated ointments and lotions applied to a baby’s skin (including sunscreens and diaper ointments) is the potential ingestion of these Lead-contaminated products with the normal hand-to-mouth activity one can expect with infants. You can read more about the concern here.  You can also read more about the concern here.

There is also a secondary concern for the potential for transdermal absorption of the contaminants present in these sunscreens. Whether-or-not the Zinc Oxide is nano or non-nano and able to pass through the barrier provided by our skin is irrelevant. The contaminants are very possibly present in a form (and at a particle size) that could be absorbed by the skin, especially given the oil-based carriers present in most of these sunscreen products (combined with the fact that they are normally applied when it is hot out and therefore pores are more likely to be open with sweating).

The potential for ingestion and for transdermal absorption of heavy metal contaminants in Zinc Oxide based sunscreens warrants further study — as we have not seen any specific studies confirming safety of these products taking into account the two above specific concerns when they are used on babies and young children.

The amount of Lead found in this and other sunscreens we have tested and reported on to date is entirely legal. We believe it should not be legal — as it is possible to make Lead-free sunscreens (we have identified two to date).

  • As all Federal agencies agree with the consensus within the scientific and medical communities that there is no safe level of Lead exposure for human beings, we recommend against using any sunscreen that has tested positive for any amount of Lead (especially if that product is intended for use by babies and young children).
  • We also encourage advocating for the creation of lead-free products, advocating for holding manufacturers accountable for the manufacture of Lead-contaminated products for babies (just because it is legal, doesn’t mean it is an acceptable paradigm).

While you may choose to use one of these Lead contaminated sunscreens for  your child (many families have expressed to me a point that I wholly disagree with — that they would rather use a Lead-contaminated sunscreen than a chemical sunscreen, and that they intend to use the information we are providing to choose the sunscreen with the lowest level of Lead-contamination for their family) — we also would like to encourage you to use physical barriers to cover up on sunny days (instead of sunscreen whenever appropriate): sun hats, long-sleeved natural fiber breathable summer clothing, long dresses, pants, etc. — and swim suits with greater coverage (especially for little ones).

I personally also am a big fan of swimming before or after peak sun (so avoiding the mid-day swim times from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. when the sun can be most damaging), and – well – moving north always helps too 😉

— Signed, Your Friend in the Pacific Northwest who does not use sunscreen, but also does not get sunburns because she covers up and stays out of the midday sun!

We still have quite a few campaigns up to help us cover the costs of testing and reporting for various sunscreen products. Our work on this project stalled last year because people stopped donating to help cover the cost. Here’s a link with our not-yet-funded campaigns to help with our costs for testing and reporting on community-nominated sunscreen products. For those who are curious, here’s our budget for this testing.

  3. To watch our documentary film, click here for YouTube or click here to watch the film commercial-free on Vimeo.

It is important to note that our work only evaluates the heavy metals toxicity of the products we test, not potency, nutritional benefits or deficits, potential health impacts (or benefits) from daily consumption/use, or other considerations or concerns.

Who paid for testing and reporting on this product?

Testing and reporting for this product was not fully funded. Funding raised through our general fund GoFundMe campaign and through our monthly Patreon membership contributions helped to cover the costs of testing and reporting for this product.

  • If you appreciate these reports (and would like to help Lead Safe Mama, LLC to be in a position to continue testing and reporting on products — like this one — including publishing more lab reports for testing and reporting that has otherwise not been fully funded or sponsored), please do consider  supporting  our work by joining our Patreon channel with a small monthly donation if you have the means to do so.
  • Any amount helps — whatever you can afford.
  • Our average monthly gift from our paid Patreon members is currently about $3.27 per month [three dollars and twenty four cents per month].
  • You can also join our Patreon channel for FREE if you do not have the funds for a monthly gift!
  • Lead Safe Mama Patreon members are among the first to see our articles with lab reports as soon as they are published, so that alone is a great reason to join us there.

All articles on Lead Safe Mama dot com are now Ad-Free!

We currently  (February 22, 2026) have a combined total of about $2,061.oo a month being contributed by 631 paid members on Patreon (for an average gift of $3.27 per month). Our short-term goal is to reach $3,300.oo in monthly Patreon gifts (which would simply be 1,100 monthly gifts of $3.00 each!) so that we can cover some of the critical funding we have given up in cancelling our MediaVine advertising contract  (which we did this month — February 2026 —  to make all of our articles easier for you to read — making the Lead Safe Mama, LLC website entirely free of randomly served up in-article ads and pop-up ads!)  Please do consider joining us with a gift of at least $3.00 a month (or whatever you can afford) — we just need 413 more Patreon members to join us at this level to meet this goal. Thank you!

How does this testing and reporting work – in general?
  • Products we test are nominated by our online community for testing. You can learn more about the nomination process on this link.
  • For most of the nominated products we test and report on, Lead Safe Mama community members contribute to a dedicated GoFundMe campaign set up specifically for each product to raises the necessary funds.
  • Costs for testing and reporting for some products is covered separately by generous contributions from individual sponsors.
  • We also frequently test and report on important and/or popular key products  without first raising the funds to cover our costs, and we can always use your help to cover those expenses, making it possible for us to continue this important work.
  • You can see our full list of published and pending lab reports at this link.
    • This landing  page is updated frequently and is therefore a good page to bookmark and check back on periodically.
  • You can find all of our open GoFundMe Campaigns for product testing here
  • You can find our list of Lab Tested Safer Choices (the result of the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative — products that have either tested “non-detect” across the board, or safe by all current and proposed standards) — on this link. There are currently 113 products on this list (we will be updating it with all 113 products in the coming days, as 10 of them are recent additions this week!)
    • The most recent  version of this list which is not yet updated (but is otherwise current as of the date of publishing this article) can also be found below — scroll down.

We are currently working to raise about $12,500 in support of the Lead Safe Mama legal fund — and any amount towards this goal helps.

For those new to the work of Lead Safe Mama, LLC

Tamara Rubin is a multiple-federal-award-winning independent advocate for childhood Lead poisoning prevention and consumer goods safety, and a documentary filmmaker. She is also a mother of Lead-poisoned children (two of her four sons were acutely Lead-poisoned in 2005).

A “spacer graphic” like the one above can be found in each of our articles that include the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. The graphic differs depending on which version of the list is below it. The Teddy Bear with Heart graphic above is our newest spacer for the February 2026 update of this Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. If the graphic is different when you see this list in any article (a pumpkin, sun, leaf, rainbow, flower, turkey, Christmas ornament, or shamrock), that means it is an earlier version of the Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

While the date of the list, as it was last updated, is included in the text below it, we also wanted to introduce the visual tool that we use to identify the latest version of our lab-tested safer choices list. Lead Safe Mama team members strive to update the list with the current spacer graphic on all older articles, indicating that the most recent list of safer choices is below. However, they may not have had a chance to update every copy yet. Please be patient! Thank you.

Are you interested in seeing MORE safer choices?

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) for which the lab reports showed “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention).

  • These 103 product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of concerns for heavy metals contamination).
  • The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for each specific product. To see the full, original lab report for any of these products, type the brand or product name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com and scroll down to the bottom of the related article. The original lab report can always be found at the very bottom of each related article. Most of our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
    • This landing page is updated weekly (most weeks) and is a good page to bookmark and check back on periodically if you want the latest test results.
  • Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted in the list below (and on all of our related articles). Other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results.
    • Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.
    • Test results are PRODUCT SPECIFIC, not BRAND SPECIFIC.
      • One should never assume that all products from a specific brand are clean just because one or more products from that specific brand came back with clean test results.

Products on our “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” list are retested periodically (annually if possible, or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean (non-detect for all, or safe-by-all standards) with a second round of lab analysis, it is removed from the list. If you have questions about a product that was removed from this list, please use the search bar at the top of the page to see more on that product, including its most recent test results. Products previously on this list that have since been removed are also noted at the very bottom (three products currently fall in that category).

Products Removed from the Above “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” List

The three products in the numbered list below were previously on the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List, but were removed after 2025 retesting found traces of toxicants present.

In each case (for the three products noted below), the retests detected very low levels of toxicants — consistent with the idea that these products are still relatively cleaner choices compared to similar items in their categories. However — even though these products could still be classified as “cleaner” by nearly every standard — we only include products on the list above if the most recent lab results for that product show non-detect levels for all four metals we test for (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic), or “safe by all standards” for Arsenic levels below 10 ppb with no other metals detected. So while these three products tested positive for very low levels of toxicants with the most recent round of lab testing, they no longer meet our standards to remain on our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

You can read more about these products and see the most recent lab test results for each in the articles linked below:
