Testing Weleda Baby Calendula Diaper Cream (12% Zinc Oxide) for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, & Arsenic with Independent, Third-Party, Laboratory Testing

A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

This Weleda Baby Calendula Diaper Cream did test positive for Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic — which arguably is not great given it a product used on the skin of babies and there are concerns for both ingestion risks and transdermal exposure risk (read more about that here). Lead is a noted Neurotoxin and Carcinogen. Cadmium is also a known Carcinogen.

That said, out of all of the lab reports we have published to date for Zinc-Oxide based diaper ointments, this Weleda Diaper Cream product currently has the lowest level of Lead in that product category…  so some might consider this a “win” or a “safer option”. Please scroll down to see the comparative chart of the diaper ointment lab results we have published to date. Please also ALWAYS remember that all federal agencies agree with the consensus in the scientific and medical communities that there is no safe level of Lead exposure – especially for infants and toddlers (the target market for this product).

Consumer Reports Magazine Coverage of “Safer” Diaper Ointment Choices
— including this Weleda product

I would like  to take a moment to note that this Weleda product is one of the 14 products that Consumer Reports Magazine included in their discussion of  diaper ointments in their article published in January of 2025* — an article written by Made Safe’s Sydney Cook (noted in that article as “a substance and material expert” and “the director of science and research for Made Safe”).

* When we first saw this article the date was January 2025, although it may have originally been published earlier.

Sydney Cook Bio from the Consumer Reports  Diaper Ointment Article:

In that article (additional screenshots below) this Weleda product was listed under the “Good Choices” section – along with several other products that are likely heavily Lead-contaminated (an easy conclusion for any true / experienced “materials expert” to draw based on the ingredient profile of these products).

Relevant Product Ratings Screenshot from the January 2025 Consumer Reports Article:

We bring this up at this time as this Consumer Reports article originally stated that all of the 14 listed / featured / highlighted ointments and creams were free of “Lead, Mercury, and Cadmium” in the introduction of the article (see screenshot below – with sentence circled in pink).

This is especially alarming misinformation given the statement was attributed to an individual who is ostensibly a “substance and material expert”. It’s hard for me to believe that someone specifically noted as being a “substance and material expert” for an agency (Made Safe) whose business model is to certify products as free of toxic chemicals (specifically including addressing Lead and Cadmium contamination) is not aware of the significant and pervasive Lead contamination (as well as the frequent Cadmium Contamination) of Zinc-Oxide based products. This is “Materials Science 101”. This is not new information. Here’s just one article from 2015 noting the issue of Lead-Contamination of Zinc Oxide

Screenshot of original opening of this article:

Consumer Reports “Fixed” The Article – Phew!

Hats off to Consumer Reports as they did remove that statement (circled in pink above) from the original article in September of 2025 when Lead Safe Mama, LLC alerted them to the likelihood  of the misinformation presented.

We do, however, have ongoing concerns that several heavily Lead-contaminated (and Cadmium-Contaminated) ointments continue to be listed as safer choices in that article online  (this is especially concerning as it is an article published by Consumer Reports — a source that parents and grandparents trust for science-based, impartial, unbiased information). We felt it was critical to make our concerns public given Consumer Reports has not made any further edits to the article as of the date of publishing this article here on LeadSafeMama.com (November 15, 2025), and given that parents often use Consumer Reports as a reference guide to look up the safety of products.

Unfortunately, our “difference of opinion” with Consumer Reports over this particular issue has actually caused Lead Safe Mama, LLC to part ways with Consumer Reports Magazine for now. We are not comfortable working with / partnering with an organization that is recommending heavily Lead-contaminated diaper ointments as safer choices (“Good Choices” / “Top Choices”).

Conflict of Interest?

We also have concerns about a potential conflict of interest (over Consumer Reports’ choice to  continue to work with Made Safe) as Consumer Reports is – again – supposed to be an impartial, unbiased organization which publishes uninfluenced recommendations, yet the recommendations and ratings noted in the Diaper Ointment article highlight and favor products manufactured by Made Safe affiliated companies (featuring as top choices  at least two likely Lead-contaminated products, one of which is Made Safe Certified).

  • Specifically Sydney notes Babo Botanicals as a top Diaper Rash Cream choice, when Babo Botanicals appears to have four (notably Lead-Contaminated)  “Made Safe Certified” products (and thus Babo has a financial relationship with Made Safe) – although that certification does not appear to extend to their diaper ointment.
  • While the EllaOla Diaper Rash Cream is another top choice – it is no longer on the market, however it was also likely heavily Lead-contaminated given it had a Zinc-Oxide content of 14%.
  • These recommendations in the “Top Choices” section (which accompany two other Lead contaminated top choices – Tubby Todd and Hello Bello)  is problematic not only because Made Safe receives significant financial consideration from the companies whose products they promote  and “certify” — but also because – in the context of this particular article –  consumers will (incorrectly) reasonably believe and understand that if a Made Safe representative states a product is safe that means that product is free from Lead (and other toxicants).

Note screenshot below stating that the EllaOla Certified Diaper Cream is screened and evaluated regarding the presence of carcinogens. Made Safe is careful to avoid blatantly stating that the products they certify are actually FREE of carcinogens – at least in this blurb (just that they are “screened” and “evaluated” for them). This appears to be how they get away with giving their Made Safe Certifications to products that (when tested by a third party independent lab) test positive for at least two carcinogens. However  their statement below “made without chemicals known or suspected to be harmful to humans” should cover chemicals like Lead and Cadmium Contaminated Zinc Oxide.

Given most of the diaper ointments in the Consumer Reports article were never likely to be Lead-free (as they were originally stated to be), and given the article had been published, public and findable for most of nine months (from January to September 2025 —  and possibly longer), we here at Lead Safe Mama, LLC felt it was important to bring attention to these product-specific concerns and to correct the record in the public sphere – by testing and reporting on all of the Zinc-Oxide based diaper ointments mentioned in that article. We launched a campaign to help us cover costs for testing and reporting on these products specifically and you can find that  link here.

To Reiterate:
Specific Relevant Concerns That We Want Consumers To Be Aware Of

  1. The fact that many of products (originally promoted in the Consumer Reports article as Lead-free) do test positive for Lead, and most of the Lead-contaminated products listed actually have Lead present  at quite concerning levels (in addition to Cadmium).
  2. The lack of neutrality in this Diaper Ointment article in Consumer Reports Magazine: specifically a potential conflict of interest in Consumer Reports using representatives from a “pay to play” certification agency like Made Safe to oversee product recommendations, and then having the “top rated” products in the article (some of which are Lead-contaminated) be from companies (like Babo Botanicals) expressly affiliated with Made Safe.
  3. The concern for Sydney Cook’s credentials in that she is noted to be an expert. It is quite alarming that she originally wrote (in this article she penned for Consumer Reports) that all of the  diaper ointments in the article were free of Lead, Mercury, and Cadmium — when that is simply a false statement.  The majority of these ointments should have been assumed to test positive for concerning levels of at least Lead and Cadmium given they have Zinc Oxide as a primary ingredient. This is a fact that a “substance and material expert” should be very much aware of, and it seems that Consumer Reports and Made Safe may not have done their due diligence in using this person in this capacity as an expert on a matter for which she does not appear to have expertise.
  4. In discussing this issue with Consumer Reports Magazine, we asked how they could publish a statement that all of these products were free of Lead and Cadmium if – in fact – they did independent testing. They explained to us that when these products (10 of the 14 listed) were tested by Consumer Reports, they were using low thresholds of detection that were too high to detect the Lead and Cadmium contamination in these products. While we we don’t know the timing of when they did this testing and we have not seen these reports ourselves, we expect they must have had low threshold of detection of either 5 ppm or 10 ppm (5,000 ppb or 10,000 ppb), as the highest level of Lead we have found in diaper ointments is still under 5 ppm.

I do want to also note that this not the first time that Made Safe has certified or promoted Lead-contaminated products as Lead-free. This is a persistent problem with that agency, since their inception. You can read more about that here. This is one of the reasons we recommend that consumers place ZERO FAITH in any of these certification programs (EWG Verified, Clean Label Project, Made Safe, etc.) They all fall short when it comes to evaluating the concern for the presence of toxicants in items intended for use by babies. They pay-to-play method for certification in the “green” / “non-toxic” space is fraught with pitfalls, and it is too easy for these agencies to overlook toxicant concerns in the pursuit of cashflow to cover their operating expenses.

We did not write this article to impugn the reputation of Consumer Reports Magazine, they have done a lot of good over the years and we are thrilled that they have turned their attention to this vital subject (lead exposure caused by consumer goods and consumable products) – a topic that many other mainstream news sources are ignoring.  We understand that they have a different focus than ours – with theirs being primarily to recommend products (within a rating scale), and ours being to protect against Lead exposure. Unfortunately this particular situation (related to a concern for Lead-contaminated products sold for use with babies), put us past the “agree to disagree” point – for now.

Revised / updated September 2025 opening of this article:

It is important to note that our work only evaluates the heavy metals toxicity of the products we test, and not the potency, nutritional benefits or deficits, potential health impacts (or benefits) from daily consumption / use or other considerations or concerns.

A “spacer graphic” like the one above can be found in each of our articles that include the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. The graphic differs depending on which version of the list is below it. The Silly Turkey graphic above is our newest spacer for the November 2025 update of this Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. If the graphic is different when you see this list in any article (a pumpkin, sun, leaf, rainbow, flower, heart, Christmas ornament, or shamrock), that means it is an earlier version of the Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

While the date of the list (the date of the last update) is included in the text below it, we also wanted to introduce the visual tool that we use to identify the latest version of our lab-tested safer choices list. Lead Safe Mama team members strive to update the list with the current spacer graphic on all older articles, indicating that the most recent list of safer choices is below. However, they may not have had a chance to update every copy yet. Please be patient! Thank you.

Are you interested in seeing MORE safer choices?

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) for which the lab reports showed “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention).

  • These 103 product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of concerns for heavy metals contamination).
  • The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for each specific product. To see the full, original lab report for any of these products, type the brand or product name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com and scroll down to the bottom of the related article. The original lab report can always be found at the very bottom of each related article. Most of our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
    • This landing page is updated weekly (most weeks), and is a good page to bookmark and check back on periodically if you want the latest test results.
  • Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted in the list below (and on all of our related articles). Other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results.
    • Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.
    • Test results are PRODUCT SPECIFIC, not BRAND SPECIFIC.
      • One should never assume that all products from a specific brand are clean just because one or more products from that specific brand came back with clean test results.

Products on our “lab tested safer choices” list are retested periodically (annually, if possible or more frequently — as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean (non-detect for all, or safe-by-all standards) with a second round of lab analysis, it is removed from the list. If you have questions about a product that was removed from this list, please use the search bar at the top of the page to see more on that product, including its most recent test results. Products previously on this list that have since been removed are also noted at the very bottom (there are currently three products that fall in that category).

Products Removed from the Above “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” List

The three products noted in the numbered list below were previously on the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List, but were removed after 2025 retesting found traces of toxicants present.

In each case (for the three products noted below), the retests detected very low levels of toxicants — consistent with the idea that these products are still relatively cleaner choices compared to similar items in their categories. However — even though these products could still be classified as “cleaner” by nearly every standard — we only include products on the list above if the most recent lab results for that product show non-detect levels for all four metals we test for (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic), or “safe by all standards” for Arsenic levels below 10 ppb with no other metals detected. So while these three products tested positive for very low levels of toxicants with the most recent round of lab testing, they no longer meet our standards for remaining on our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

You can read more about these products and see the most recent lab test results for each in the articles linked below (new lab reports will be published shortly):

  1. One Degree Organics Sprouted Rolled Oats, yellow bag (Made in Canada) — May 2025 Retest
  2. Jovial Organic All-Purpose Einkorn Flour (Made in Italy) 2025 Retest Lab Report to be Published Shortly
