Testing Tayto Potato Crisps in Salt & Vinegar Flavour — The Original Irish Crisp — for Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, & Mercury with Independent, Third-party Laboratory Analysis

#1) A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

This potato chip product (purchased in Ireland in 2025 expressly for the purpose of having it laboratory tested to determine the toxicant profile) tested positive for the highest level of Cadmium that we have found in a potato chip with all of the testing of  potato chip products that we have done to date though the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community-Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative.

The full original lab report for this product can be found at the bottom of this article, please scroll down to see it.

Our chart comparing the toxicant profiles of all potato chips we have tested to date is also below. The highest-Cadmium chip noted in that chart (which has not yet been updated with this new information) was the Lays Classic chips (in the yellow bag). The Lays product tested positive for 165 parts per billion (ppb) Cadmium. This Tayto “Original Irish Crisp” product (in Salt & Vinegar flavor – pictured above) tested positive for 236.9 ppb Cadmium — that 43.6% more Cadmium than the most toxic USA made potato chip tested to date. We will be updating the chart below shortly to include these new test results.

Given the rise in dietary-related cancers in Gen X and younger, and given the fact that potato chips  (or “crisps” if you are in Ireland / UK) are one of the most popular (if not the most popular) snack product consumed by people of all ages today, it is our recommendation that we (human beings) avoid  consumption of potatoes and potato products (if at all possible), until cleaner sources can be identified using third-party, independent, scientific testing. Growing your own potatoes is an option – however if you choose to go that route, please make sure you are using clean soil (have your soil tested for toxicants before you plant).

Based on some preliminary research (referenced in several of our other articles with lab reports for various potato chip products that we have tested to date), this significant level of Cadmium contamination of ground crops (crops actually grown in the dirt – or with direct contact with the dirt during the growing process, like potatoes and strawberries) is likely coming from the use of phosphate based fertilizers (including phosphate rock fertilizers which are commonly used on both conventional and organic crops, but for which the use is outlawed – or at least strongly discouraged – in many parts of Europe).

Phosphate rock fertilizer can be heavily Cadmium-contaminated, thus contaminating the soil it is used on. This type of contamination then becomes a generational problem as soil remediation is complicated and difficult, sometimes taking many generations to do effectively and thoroughly.

We look forward to testing more examples of potato chip products from around the world to determine if cleaner chips are available (or even possible). We’re hoping that organic chips (or crisps) from Italy, France, or Germany may end up being cleaner safer choices!

#2) Can we find more safer choices?

We will continue to look for safer choices, funding permitting. The independent, third-party, laboratory testing  coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC is a community-collaborative initiative. Our community (including you!) nominates products for testing and reporting (instructions to nominate a product can be found on this link)  and our community contributes financially to help us cover the cost of the testing and reporting for these community nominated products.

The campaign to help cover our costs for testing and reporting on this Tayto product only received one (1) $5.00 (five dollar) contribution as of the time of publishing this article. If you appreciate this information and want to support this work so that we can continue to publish reports like these (with scientific data always shared directly with the public and never behind a paywall), please do consider contributing to the Tayto campaign (link below) or to other related campaigns for testing that we have pending (to help us both identify safer choices, and to help us identify more dangerous products that should be avoided). Check out the links below. Thank you!

To date we have identified 83 “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” – across all product types that we have tested – and you can find that full product list below (please scroll down).

#3) Ways you can support the work of Lead Safe Mama, LLC

If you appreciate what we do and would like to help keep our work going by contributing something (any amount, really!) toward the costs of our not-yet-funded laboratory testing and reporting, please consider making a contribution ($25? $50? $100? Whatever you can afford) supporting Lead Safe Mama, LLC through our General Fund GoFundMe or even better please consider  joining us on Patreon with a small monthly gift in support of the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community-Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative. Thank you. You can join us on Patreon for FREE or with a small monthly contribution in support of the work we do. All of our Patreon membership tiers have the same benefits as our work is never behind a paywall. Lead Safe Mama, LLC is not a 501(c)3 non-profit, we are (instead) an LLC with a unique community-collaborative business model, so – while gifts in support of our work are greatly appreciated, they are not tax-deductible contributions. #6) Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention). The product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of a concern for heavy metals contamination).

The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for the specific product listed. To see the full original lab report for any of these products, type the brand name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com (and scroll down to the bottom of the related article). All our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.

Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted, and other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results. Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.

Products on our “safer choices” list are retested periodically (annually or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean, it is removed from the list.

  1. You mentioned that soil contamination can take generations to overcome. I remember reading once that lead contamination in soil can be reversed by incorporating organic material into it. I wonder if that would work for other heavy metals as well. I’ve been digging some of my own compostables (watermelon rinds, rotten fruit, and rotten vegetables but NOT potato peelings due to their pesticides) into my raspberry patch area, plus into another area I’ve used as a vegetable garden. I also put fallen tree leaves on top of my garden soil in the Fall. I figure that with all of the leaded gas and leaded house paint used in the past (and even sanded!) it may help the soil, and I don’t trust most local/commercial compost because it’s made from people’s grass trimmings and other things that may contain pesticides. Any thoughts?

  2. Wow, all the cadmium in potatoes and potato products is mind boggling! Something I surely never thought about before. Very sad for celiacs who are struggling to find wheat substitutions. Choices are getting more limited! ☹️

    1. It’s definitely frustrating – and hard to break the habit. It comes down to choosing health, which is not always an easy choice to make.
