“EWG Verified” and Contains Mercury — Testing Solara Suncare Sunscreen Milk (SPF 50) for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic with an Independent, Third-Party Laboratory

A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:
This Mercury-contaminated Solara Suncare Guardian Angel Sunscreen Milk (SPF 50) is an “EWG Verified” product, further illustrating a complete lack of integrity or appropriate scientific oversight of EWG’s ratings and verification system. The system is clearly pay-to-play, completely (and perhaps intentionally?) overlooking concerns for heavy metal contaminants in many of the products they “verify.” It’s that, or the scientists the EWG employs for the verification process are either 1) complete idiots, or 2) possibly paid off to look the other way.
This is the 10th report we have published for a Lead-contaminated EWG Verified product to date, and we have more reports pending in our queue. This means that 10 out of the 11 EWG Verified products we have tested and reported on to date came back positive for Lead contamination — that equates to 90.9%.
To reiterate, 90.9% of the EWG Verified products we have tested and reported on to have shown heavy metal contamination. You can read more about our concern for EWG’s rating system here.
To see the full, original lab report from our testing on this product, please scroll down to the very bottom of this article. The shareable social media graphic with the lab test results is also below, about midway down.
The second image below is from the EWG’s website, which states that “EWG Verified aims to be the gold standard in the health and wellness space.” And, perhaps they are the gold standard — of greenwashing, misrepresentation, and false advertising, alongside fake standards and certifications (right up there with Made Safe, the Clean Label Project Purity Award, and so many other pay-to-play systems that are not at all impartial and have a history of giving their top certifications and awards to Lead-contaminated products).
It’s a jungle out there, folks — trust no corporation. Trust no agency generating income from offering certifications to manufacturers. Instead, trust in science. None of these certifications is trustworthy. The act of creating a certification program is fundamentally an act of compromise based on profit — it’s an act of compromise that leads to corruption. This is why you will never see a certification from Lead Safe Mama, LLC — we cannot be bought. We will only share actual scientific test results with you (the public), so you can use this information to help make informed, safer choices for your family. Our goal is to teach scientific curiosity, help you along the path of asking better questions, and conducting research using unbiased sources, all with the underlying guiding principle that there is no safe level of Lead exposure for human beings.

We did not end up raising sufficient funding to cover the costs of testing and reporting on this Solara Suncare Sunscreen Milk (SPF 50) — at the time of publishing this report, only $5 had been contributed toward the $495 needed. Lead Safe Mama is not only searching for safer products for children, but also holding EWG accountable for greenwashing and using a misguided, corporate-influenced (bought and paid for) product ratings system — if you appreciate what we are trying to do here and would like to contribute in support of the testing and reporting costs for this specific product, here is the link to do so.
Here are some other EWG top-rated (and “EWG Verified”) products we have not yet raised the funds for testing and reporting costs, as publishing these reports asap will help us build awareness of this concern through news coverage, and we would greatly appreciate your contributions supporting any of these campaigns:
- Attitude Sunly Sunscreen Stick, SPF 30
- Attitude Sunly Face Sunscreen Cream, SPF 30
- Kokua Sun Care, SPF 50
- Mustela Baby Sunscreen Stick, SPF 50
- Stream2Sea EcoStick Sunscreen, SPF 35
Contributions supporting Lead Safe Mama, LLC are always welcome but are particularly needed this month, as we are battling an operating shortfall of over $10,000 for this summer. We recently sent more than 50 (fifty!) products to the lab for testing (including many sunscreen products) without first receiving full funding through each respective campaign to cover the costs of testing and reporting those items. While this may seem (at first glance) like an irresponsible action from a business perspective, all of this testing was very important in helping provide critical supporting data points for our greater Laboratory Testing Initiative and the work we are planning on organizing moving forward (including efforts like holding EWG accountable for greenwashing and repeated misrepresentations, as well as our separate initiative of reporting as many TFCA violations to the State of Washington and the FDA before the end of the 2025 calendar year).
To both support Lead Safe Mama, LLC and be among the first to see our new lab reports when they are published, please subscribe to our Patreon Channel (you can join us there for free or with a small monthly gift supporting our work). To see the full, original results for each sunscreen product we have tested to date, find our sunscreen lab report landing page here.
We have only found two sunscreen products to date that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic (with the limits of detection for each metal noted on the lab report for that specific product). Each of these two is a chemical sunscreen product, so we encourage you to research the other ingredients in those products before choosing them for your family.
Please always use the findings of the independent, third-party laboratory testing conducted through the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative as a jumping-off point. Our data is intended as a starting point to help along your journey in making safer choices for your family. We understand that a product returning from the lab with “non-detect” readings for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic may not be your final deciding factor in which items you choose for your family.

Can we find more safer choices?
We will continue seeking out safer choices, funding permitting. Lead Safe Mama, LLC is coordinating this independent, third-party laboratory testing as part of a community collaborative initiative. Our community (including you!) nominates what products we test and report on (here’s our instructions for how to nominate a product) and then contributes financially to help us cover the costs of that testing and reporting.
If you appreciate this information and want to support this work so we can continue publishing reports like these (always sharing the scientific data directly with the public, never behind a paywall), please consider contributing to any of the specific, not-yet-funded campaigns linked above or other related pending campaigns (helping us both identify safer choices, and report more dangerous products that you may want to avoid). Check out the link below. Thank you!
- This link features all of our open, not-yet-funded campaigns for the costs of testing and reporting on community-nominated products.
To date, we have identified 83 “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” across all product types we have tested — you can find the full list below (please scroll down).

Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List
Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention). The product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of a concern for heavy metals contamination).
–
The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for the specific product listed. To see the full original lab report for any of these products, type the brand name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com (and scroll down to the bottom of the related article). All our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
–
Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted, and other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results. Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.
Products on our “safer choices” list are retested periodically (annually or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean, it is removed from the list.

I have NO words…. This product is sitting on my bathroom counter right now, along with 3 other Solara sunscreen versions (sport, tinted (2)! These are lovely products and are like skin care and sunscreen in one. However- I am HORRIFIED at your test results! These aren’t cheap products either….
I recently have added dermatologist recommended Japanese chemical sunscreens to my rotation as they are very nice to use and have better ingredients than what our FDA allows. We are truly far behind in the world when it comes to sunscreens. To think I had just gotten over my “mineral only” stance on sunscreen…. I use sunscreen every single day on my face, arms and hands as I live in Texas and this sun is brutal.
Thank you Tamara , and I will be adding my contribution for this testing.
Thank you so much for commenting.
Someone else asked why we were testing these “obscure” products when funds for testing was not raised, and frankly – I don’t think they are obscure… there are a lot of people using them (unfortunately).
I’m not exactly sure why the sunscreen campaigns did not raise funds to cover the costs of our testing and reporting but I am going to go with the theory that the economy is bad right now and people didn’t want to think about this issue over the summer.
In the end I decided to send these products to the lab without funding (not a good financial decision for my business of course!) because I felt it was super important to have these data points publicly available – especially given the contamination is so pervasive and theres a chance we will be able to hold at least some of these products accountable for this concern with the new Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act.
It will also serve as a useful data set going into next summer – and hopefully by then we will have our app up and live to more efficiently fund this testing!
Thank you!
