Testing Smarty Pants Kids Plus Multi & Fiber Children’s Supplement for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic with Independent, Third-Party Laboratory Analysis

A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

Consistent with our testing of other products from the Smarty Pants brand to date, this product tested positive for traces of toxicants (in this case, specifically Lead and Arsenic – to see the full original lab report for this product, please scroll down to the bottom of this article).

We anticipate the Arsenic is coming from whatever ingredient is used to make this product in a “gummy” form, and the Lead is likely / possibly (educated guess) coming from the source of Fiber (as independent research has shown that many fiber supplements contain notable levels of Lead). This is just speculation, of course. We will create a comparative chart showing all of the Smarty Pants brand products we have tested to date shortly (with their respective lab test results) – and will link it here once it has been published).

As all relevant federal agencies agree that there is no safe Level of Lead exposure for children, and as the impacts of Lead on the body are cumulative over a lifetime – I am going to stick with my recommendation that children should not be consuming ANY products with detectable levels of lead (as measured in parts per billion), especially products with purported health benefits, like supplements.

That said, many members of the Lead Safe Mama community would rather take a low-lead supplement than a high-lead supplement (an approach I personally highly discourage!) and might choose this product as a safer choice for their child as it does have a relatively lower level of Lead (compared to many other children’s supplements that we have tested to date). Here’s the link to our comparative chart with children’s supplement test results. Looking at this chart, this Smarty Pants Mulit & Fiber supplement for kids is less Lead-contaminated than eight of the 12 other products reported on the chart.

In the end, Lead Safe Mama, LLC helps you get access to direct-to-consumer unbiased / unfiltered science to guide you in making informed choices for your family. No one will judge you for choosing a product like this (as a “safer choice” compared to others tested), but we would like to invite and encourage you to continue to work with us to hold companies accountable for manufacturing toxic products (especially products in the category of “children’s supplements”). In 2025 we – as parents – should not have the concern for Lead contamination in high-priced supplements that have been otherwise designed to provide essential nutrients that many of our children need. We should not be put in the position of needing to choose a “less lead-contaminated” supplement for our child.  Manufacturers can do better (our list of lab tested safer choices below clearly demonstrates this), and they need pressure from us (consumers) to help them along in their journey to do better.

Contributions supporting Lead Safe Mama, LLC are always welcome but are particularly needed this month, as we are battling an operating shortfall of over $10,000 for this summer. We recently sent more than 50 (fifty!) products to the lab for testing (including several baby food pouch products) without first receiving full funding through each respective campaign to cover the costs of testing and reporting  those items. While this may seem (at first glance) like an irresponsible action from a business perspective, all of this testing was very important in helping provide critical supporting data points for our greater Laboratory Testing Initiative and the work we are planning on organizing moving forward.

Our community (including you!) nominates what products we test and report on (here’s our instructions for how to nominate a product) and then contributes financially to help us cover the costs of that testing and reporting.

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention). The product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of a concern for heavy metals contamination).
