Testing Happy Ocean Kids Mineral Sunscreen (SPF 45) for Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, and Mercury with Independent, Third-party Laboratory Analysis

But what exactly does EWG qualify as a chemical of concern? And do the chemicals of concern include Lead?

This AI summary (see the screenshot below) lists Lead as one of the EWG’s chemicals of concern, but we could not find it expressly and/or clearly mentioned anywhere on the EWG’s website. The EWG does have an article on “The Toxic Twelve Chemicals and Contaminants in Cosmetics,” although it only lists nine total chemicals. While Lead is mentioned in the article, we could not find it included in an official numbered list of 12 (or any other number of) chemicals of concern. We’ve also uploaded a PDF of this piece to our website in case it is changed or removed on the EWG’s site — here’s that link.

This is the paragraph (below) from the EWG article linked above. This paragraph clearly demonstrates that the organization is at least aware of the concern for Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, and Mercury in cosmetics, regardless of whether or not these substances are officially on their “chemicals of concern” list. The EWG is clearly distinguishing between concerns related to ingredients and concerns related to contaminants — perhaps as a way of skirting responsibility for giving their “EWG Verified” badge to Lead-contaminated products?

A Not-so-Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

“Second Verse, Same As The First!” Rinse, repeat. Rinse, repeat.

This “story” of the persistent (replicable) Lead contamination in sunscreen products made for use by children and babies is getting old. Especially regarding products that specifically carry the “EWG Verified” badge, which most consumers trust and assume to mean the product is free of harmful contaminants see the screenshots from EWG’s website above.

This is not a story we enjoy emphasizing, but it is an important one.

Even if the greenwashing marketing spin-doctors at EWG come up with a way to dismiss EWG’s responsibility for the fact that consumers inherently trust the “EWG Verified” badge, and therefore reasonably assume that products with that badge are expressly free of harmful contaminants, including Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic (even though the EWG does not outright state this point, at least not clearly). The fact that consumers trust this badge to mean “contaminant-free” or “toxicant-free” is a huge problem because many “EWG Verified” products have tested positive for Lead and other toxicants (in some cases, even at quite significant levels).

This is consumer trust that EWG has carefully curated and developed but falsely earned in light of more than 90% of the”EWG Verified” products that the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community-Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative has found to be positive for Lead (with most also testing positive for other toxicants, specifically Arsenic and Cadmium, at concerning levels).

A screenshot of the text from EWG’s website today:

If you randomly surveyed 100 people who use EWG as a reference guide in making choices for their families, I think at least 90% of them would say they assume that when EWG states that “the product meets EWG’s strictest standards for health and safety,” EWG means the product does not test positive for concerning levels of Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic (or at least, at a minimum, that the product does not contain ingredients that are likely to test positive for those contaminants).

This is not the case, of course. The EWG Verified badge does not mean that a product is free from harmful contaminants (as we have repeatedly found). The EWG “scientists” who evaluate ingredients for concerns and harmful contaminants appear to be entirely disregarding concerns for heavy metal contamination in many products marketed as natural/ safer/ healthier alternatives — products with “natural”/ “non-chemical” ingredients. After all, heavy metals are “natural,” so who can blame them for that approach? (#Sarcasm)

EWG persistently awards top marks to products with known Lead-contaminated ingredients like Zinc, Hydrated Silica, Hydroxyapatite, Bentonite Clay, and Calcium Carbonate. As we at Lead Safe Mama, LLC have been bringing the attention to these issues for years now, it appears they are choosing to do nothing about this concern (including choosing not to make changes to their EWG Verified system, nor their secondary product ranking system, as many Lead-contaminated products also carry their #1 ranking).

Especially egregious is that many of these Lead-contaminated EWG top-rated products are either:

  • A) products intended for use by babies and children
  • B) products intended for oral use (like toothpastes or tooth powders)
  • C) or products that are both intended for use by children and intended for oral use.

This is simply unconscionable.

EWG needs an administrative and scientific body overhaul if they are to continue existing, as (at least in my opinion) they have lost all credibility by giving their top ratings (including their EWG Verified badge) to so many confirmed (or likely) contaminated products. If their scientists were to argue they did not know that ingredients like Zinc and Bentonite Clay (etc.) are likely heavily lead-contaminated ingredients, then they have obviously chosen the wrong scientists to evaluate the safety and integrity of the products they are “verifying.”

Screenshot from EWG’s site today:

So… (the refrain):

We were not surprised to learn that yet another “EWG Verified” sunscreen product (expressly marketed and sold for use by children) tested positive for Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic. We were also not surprised to learn that yet another “EWG Verified” product tested positive for an amount of Lead that is very close to the legal maximum Lead content under the new Washington State Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act (the TFCA, a new law that became enforceable as of January 1, 2025).

We did not raise sufficient funding to cover the costs of testing and reporting on this Happy Ocean “EWG Verified” Kids Mineral Sunscreen (SPF 45). In fact, at the time of publishing this article, only $5 had been contributed toward the $495 needed, as outlined in our budget here. Lead Safe Mama is not only searching for safer products for children, but also holding EWG accountable for greenwashing and using a misguided, corporate-influenced (bought and paid for) product ratings system if you appreciate what we are trying to do here and would like to contribute in support of the testing and reporting costs for this specific product, here is the link to do so.

Here are some other EWG Verified products we have not yet raised the funds for testing and reporting costs, as publishing these reports asap will help us build awareness of this concern through news coverage, and we would greatly appreciate your contributions supporting any of these campaigns:

  1. Attitude Sunly Sunscreen Stick, SPF 30
  2. Attitude Sunly Face Sunscreen Cream, SPF 30
  3. Kokua Sun Care, SPF 50
  4. Mustela Baby Sunscreen Stick, SPF 50
  5. Solara Suncare Sunscreen, SPF 50
  6. Stream2Sea EcoStick Sunscreen, SPF 35

Contributions supporting Lead Safe Mama, LLC are always welcome but are particularly needed this month, as we are battling an operating shortfall of over $10,000 for this summer. We recently sent more than 50 (fifty!) products to the lab for testing (including many sunscreen products) without first receiving full funding through each respective campaign to cover the costs of testing and reporting  those items. While this may seem (at first glance) like an irresponsible action from a business perspective, all of this testing was very important in helping provide critical supporting data points for our greater Laboratory Testing Initiative and the work we are planning on organizing moving forward (including efforts like holding EWG accountable for greenwashing and repeated misrepresentations, as well as our separate initiative of reporting as many TFCA violations to the State of Washington and the FDA before the end of the 2025 calendar year).

To both support the work of Lead Safe Mama, LLC and to be among the first to see our new lab reports when they are published, please subscribe to our Patreon Channel (you can join us there for free or with a small monthly gift in supporting our work). To see all the full, original reports for each of the sunscreen products we have tested to date, find our landing page here.

We have only found two sunscreen products to date that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic (with the limits of detection for each metal noted on the lab report for that specific product). Each of these two is a chemical sunscreen product, so we encourage you to research the other ingredients in those products before choosing them for your family. Please always use the findings of the independent, third-party laboratory testing conducted through the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative as a jumping-off point. This data is intended as a starting point to help along your journey in making safer choices for your family. We understand that a product returning from the lab with “non-detect” readings for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic may not be your final deciding factor in which items you choose for your family.

Can we find more safer choices?

We will continue seeking out safer choices, funding permitting. Lead Safe Mama, LLC is coordinating this independent, third-party laboratory testing as part of a community collaborative initiative. Our community (including you!) nominates what products we test and report on (here’s our instructions for how to nominate a product) and then contributes financially to help us cover the costs of that testing and reporting.

If you appreciate this information and want to support this work so we can continue publishing reports like these (always sharing the scientific data directly with the public, never behind a paywall), please consider contributing to any of the not-yet-funded campaigns linked below or other related pending campaigns (helping us both identify safer choices and dangerous products that you may want to avoid). Check out the links below. Thank you!

To date, we have identified 83 “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” across all product types we have tested — you can find that full list below (please scroll down).

Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention). The product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of a concern for heavy metals contamination).

The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for the specific product listed. To see the full original lab report for any of these products, type the brand name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com (and scroll down to the bottom of the related article). All our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.

Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted, and other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results. Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.

Products on our “safer choices” list are retested periodically (annually or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean, it is removed from the list.
