Testing Epaderm Cream (for Psoriasis & Eczema, from Europe) for Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, & Mercury with Independent, Third-party Laboratory Analysis

#1) A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

While we did launch a fundraiser to help cover the costs of testing and reporting for this product (link here – as of the time of publishing this article, ZERO dollars have been raised for testing this product), getting this product tested was – for me – nearly entirely personal. I wanted to know if it was safe for my kiddo to use, and – if so – I also wanted to be able to recommend it to others with similar health concerns.

Some background  – our story

Lead poisoning causes a compromised immune system. Extreme plaque psoriasis often becomes a concern for children with a compromised immune system – including those with a history of lead exposure (often an issue for very young children, far below the age when children normally might begin to develop psoriasis).  While the specific link between psoriasis and lead exposure has not been well studied (and I think it is a correlation / possible causal relationship that deserves additional study by the medical research community), in my experience working with families of Lead poisoned children I have gathered quite a bit of anecdotal evidence to support the fact that there is likely a causal relationship at play.

That said, my son Avi (who was acutely Lead poisoned at just 7 months old) has had SEVERE plaque psoriasis since he was about three years old. Because his psoriasis is debilitating (causing cracking and bleeding in places you just never want to see any cracking and bleeding!) in the past 17 years we have tried literally every known remedy (prescription and non-prescription, topical and injected).

Avi now (at 20 years old) has a prescription for an injectable biologic that costs between $10,000 and $20,000 per dose in the United States (and about $600 to $800 per dose in Europe). Unfortunately, for him to get access to this prescription he needs to:

1. have insurance,
2. see the doctor,
3. have the doctor send in the prescription for approval by the insurance,
4. get rejected by the insurance,
5. contact the manufacturer to let them know he has been rejected by his insurance,
6. apply for a fee waiver for the medication with his insurance rejection as evidence of eligibility of the fee waiver,
7. wait for the fee waiver to be applied,
8. arrange for the injectable biologic to be shipped to us (refrigerated)…
9. rinse and repeat (every month or two, depending on which dose in the cycle he is on).

Needless to say, the process to get his medicine approved has been an absolute nightmare and there are many months where he goes without access to this injection (which — for him — is truly a life-saving therapy given the debilitating impacts of the severe plaque psoriasis he experiences).

When Avi is between rejections / approvals for his injections, we have always sought out over-the-counter temporary remedies to help alleviate the symptoms (if only to a degree). When we were living in Scotland two years ago we discovered this Epaderm cream (with the help and guidance of a local pharmacist there). Luckily we learned that we can also buy this product in the United States (sometimes it is available on Amazon, sometimes we have to buy it from other sources that import European products). Avi has now used this product exclusively as a topical aid to help with his psoriasis since we discovered it – and he won’t use anything else (nothing else is as good). It is the best option we have found to at least address some of his surface symptoms between injections.

I was so happy to learn that this product that is used daily by my acutely Lead poisoned son came back from the lab with “non-detect” results for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic! I truly don’t know what I would have done had it tested positive! We have now added this product to our list of lab-tested safer choices (scroll down to see the full list below – which now has 83 products listed!) Here’s the Lead Safe Mama, LLC affiliate link for this product too: https://amzn.to/47baMfV

The Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community-Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative is a project (started in March 2024) through which members of the greater Lead Safe Mama online community nominate products for laboratory testing and then collectively crowd-fund to cover the costs of the testing and reporting on nominated products. Tamara Rubin volunteers her time in support of this initiative (see our detailed budget linked below).

#5) Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention). The product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of a concern for heavy metals contamination).

The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for the specific product listed. To see the full original lab report for any of these products, type the brand name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com (and scroll down to the bottom of the related article). All our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.

Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted, and other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results. Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.

Products on our “safer choices” list are retested periodically (annually or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean, it is removed from the list.
