Are you comfortable putting a Mercury-contaminated sunscreen lotion on you baby’s skin?

A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:
While this Mercury-contaminated Badger Baby Mineral Sunscreen is NOT an “EWG Verified” product, it has been granted EWG’s other top rating – the next rating down in their system (just below their “EWG Verified” rating ) of “#1 – Low Hazard” – see the screenshot below. To see the full original lab report for our testing on this product scroll down to the very bottom of this article. The shareable social media graphic with the lab test results is about mid-way down in this article. [You can read more about our concern for EWG’s rating system on this link.]
Screenshot from EWG’s site today:
Sufficient funding to cover our costs to test and report on this Badger Baby Mineral Sunscreen Cream (SPF 40) was not raised. If you appreciate what we are trying to do here (which in this case means not only searching for safer products for children, but also holding EWG accountable for their greenwashing and misguided / corporate influenced [bought & paid for] product ratings system) and would like to contribute in support of our costs for testing and reporting on this specific product, here is the link to do so.
Here also are other EWG top rated (& Verified) products for which we have not yet raised the funds to cover our costs for testing and reporting (getting all of these reports published asap will help us get news coverage of this concern and we would greatly appreciate your contributions in support of any of these campaigns):
- Attitude Sunly Sunscreen Stick – SPF 30
- Attitude Sunly Face Sunscreen Cream – SPF 30
- Kokua Sun Care – SPF 50
- Mustela Baby Sunscreen Stick – SPF 50
- Solara Suncare Sunscreen – SPF 50
- Stream2Sea EcoStick Sunscreen, SPF 35
Contributions in support of the work of Lead Safe Mama, LLC are always welcome – but they are particularly needed this month as we are battling an operating shortfall of over $10,000 for the summer. We sent more than 50 (FIFTY!) products in to the lab for testing recently without having first received full funding to cover the cost of testing and reporting for those items. While this may seem (at first glance) like an irresponsible action (from a business perspective!), all of this testing was very important as it helped to provide critical supporting data points for our greater Laboratory Testing Initiative and work we are planning on doing moving forward with this initiative (including efforts like working to hold EWG accountable for their greenwashing and misrepresentations, as well as our separate initiative working to report as many TFCA violations to the State of Washington – and the FDA – before the end of the 2025 calendar year).
To both support the work of Lead Safe Mama, LLC and to be among the first to see our new lab reports when they are published, please subscribe to our Patreon Channel (you can join us there for FREE or with a small monthly gift in support of the work of Lead Safe Mama, LLC). To see all of the full, original lab reports for each of the sunscreen products we have tested to date, you can find our sunscreen lab reporting landing page here.
We have found only two sunscreen products to date that have tested “non-detect” for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic (with the limits of detection for each metal noted on the lab report for that specific product). Each of these two is a chemical sunscreen product, so we encourage you to research the other ingredients in those products before choosing to use them with your family.
Please always use the findings of the independent, third-party laboratory testing done through the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative as a jumping off point — a starting point to help you along your journey of making safer choices for your family. We understand that the fact that a product comes back from the lab with “non-detect” readings for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic may not be your final deciding factors in which products you choose for your family.

- This a link to an article that discusses in depth the concern for the presence of Lead (and other heavy metals) in sunscreen products made for use by children. Please read this for a more comprehensive context to the levels of toxicants found in this product (shown below in both our sharable social media graphic with the results and the original lab report).

Can we find more safer choices?
We will continue to look for more safer choices, funding permitting. The independent, third-party, laboratory testing Lead Safe Mama, LLC is coordinating is part of a community-collaborative initiative. Our community (including you!) nominates which products we test and report on (here’s our instructions for how to nominate a product) and our community then contributes financially to help us cover the costs of that testing and reporting.
If you appreciate this information and want to support this work so we can continue publishing reports like these (always sharing the scientific data directly with the public, never behind a paywall), please do consider contributing to any of the specific not-yet-funded campaigns (linked above) or to other related campaigns for testing that are still pending (helping us to both identify safer choices, and to identify more dangerous products that you may want to avoided). Check out the link below. Thank you!
- This link shows all of our open, not-yet-funded campaigns for covering the costs of testing and reporting on community-nominated products.
To date, we have identified 83 “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” across all product types we have tested, and you can find that full product list below (please scroll down).

Thank you.
- You can join us on Patreon for FREE or with a small monthly contribution in support of the work we do.

Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List
Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention). The product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of a concern for heavy metals contamination).
–
The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for the specific product listed. To see the full original lab report for any of these products, type the brand name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com (and scroll down to the bottom of the related article). All our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
–
Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted, and other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results. Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.
Products on our “safer choices” list are retested periodically (annually or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean, it is removed from the list.
