A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

Reporting on the fact that popular consumer goods test positive for varying levels of toxic heavy metals — is generally not “fun”, nor “rewarding”.  The criticism and backlash we (Lead Safe Mama, LLC, me personally, and my team) often get for simply sharing unbiased science (usually shared with the context of how products may have the potential to harm children), gets tiring at times — although sometimes it is amusing (we shared some amusing community feedback on Instagram yesterday if you want to check out the range of backlash, conspiracy theories, and likely-industry-influenced misinformation being shared about our work).

What is rewarding – is the goal of protecting children from exposure to toxicants, and I try to never lose sight of that goal (including when that means testing and reporting on products manufactured and sold for use by adults that may only occasionally be used by children and/or pregnant women — and are therefore worth closer examination even though they are not strictly “products intended for use by children”).

What is SUPREMELY AMUSING to me (hilarious actually), is when the marketing team for a likely toxic product goes OUT OF THEIR WAY to aggressively assert that the product is NOT toxic, when they could have skirted the issue (and been less open for criticism, and less open for false advertising claims) if they just avoided the outrageous claims in the first place. Frankly … what out-of-their mind marketing person for this “Primally Pure” sunscreen product (a dubious product name at best), decided to jump in head first by creating the advertising tag line “POISON FREE”?! HUH?! What were they basing those claims on? Why did they jump out on that limb? Especially given their product tested positive for concerning levels of TWO SUBSTANCES that are known to be POISONOUS To HUMANS… and we only tested for FOUR, so who knows what other poisons this product may contain.

Ridiculous.

Remember: All relevant federal agencies agree there is no safe level of Lead exposure for children (and all humans for that matter).

  1. What does this report mean? You usually have a diagram with red or green to indicate levels of toxicity. Also the happy faces were also helpful. Don’t know how to read this new way you are sharing your results 🙁
