Sky & Sol Face & Body Sunscreen (SPF 50)— “Made with Edible Ingredients” Tests Positive for 4,612 ppb Lead and 621.6 ppb Cadmium with Independent, Third Party Laboratory Testing

June 4, 2025 – Wednesday

Before we get into the meat & potatoes of this article, I wanted to start by sharing screenshots of highlights showing the greenwashing spewed out by this company. Check out the 14 screenshots below (with the offending text written out in red above each screenshot), and then please scroll down to read the article and see the full original lab report for this product. As with all of our articles sharing the independent, third party laboratory testing we coordinate, the original lab report is at the very bottom of the article. We are reporting this product to the State Of Washington –  as it is a clear violation of their new (January 1, 2025) Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act (TFCA). Hopefully they will take aggressive action in this case, given the company is so guilty of false advertising & greenwashing, promoting this incredibly toxic product as safe for use by children. We will also be reporting this product to the FDA, to see if they can take action under the circumstances. The amount of Lead we found in this sunscreen is the highest level of Lead we have found in any sunscreen to date.

A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

This Sky & Sol Face & Body Sunscreen (SPF 50, Tallow Based), tested positive for extremely high levels of Lead (a neurotoxin), and Cadmium (a carcinogen) – in addition to traces of Arsenic.

Even though this product is not illegal by current Federal  (FDA) Standards, we will be reporting it to the FDA –  so they are made aware of the concern. Our hope (in reporting this to the FDA) is that this piece of data will be part of a body of evidence that may eventually influence future FDA policy, to significantly further restrict the allowable Lead levels in cosmetics products! For products like this (not “expressly marketed for use by children”), our hope is that the FDA will also eventually require stronger (bolder, more visible) labeling standards warning these products are “NOT INTENDED FOR USE BY CHILDREN” (especially if the FDA is not able to quickly implement new health-protective regulatory limits on the Lead and Cadmium content in these products).

If you would like to join us in reporting this sunscreen product to the FDA (given the significant levels of Cadmium and Lead found), here is the link to do so (if you are comfortable doing so, please include your child’s Blood Lead Level in your FDA complaint if your child has tested positive for Lead in their blood and was using this product): https://www.fda.gov/safety/report-problem-fda

We are also reporting this product to the State of Washington – as it is a clear violation of the new (January 2025) Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act (TFCA). The TFCA limits the total Lead content in personal care items / cosmetics (the class of products that sunscreen is part of) to 1 part per million.  1 ppm is the same as 1,000 parts per billion. This product tested positive for 4,612.5 parts per billion (ppb) Lead when we sent it in for independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing. 4,612.5 ppb is the same as 4.6 parts per million (ppm), so this is a clear violation of the TFCA. As noted above, given the level of greenwashing used with the marketing of this product – including their repeated assertion that it is “safe to eat” and “made with edible ingredients” – we have specific concerns related to potential ingestion pathway exposure for children (including the normal, anticipated hand-to-mouth behavior of younger children) – which may not be approached with adequate caution / prevented (preventative measures along the lines of… “Timmy, DON’T LICK YOUR HANDS!  (Timmy being your typical three year old child, for example) by parents if they use this product on their children thinking it is actually safe to ingest.

The image below shows three screenshots from the Clean Label Project 2018 Sunscreen Report. While we are primarily not in agreement with the standards and practices of the Clean Label Project, we felt these particular “factoids” were relevant and worth sharing – especially when considering the ingestion hazard concern (and even more so, given the context of all of the Sky & Sol propaganda clearly stating they only use ingredients that are “edible” and “safe enough to eat”). There is NO PLANET where a sunscreen that tests positive for more than 4,600 ppb Lead is “safe enough to eat” (Note context provided on the center image of the three images below)!

IMPORTANT: All relevant federal agencies agree there is no safe level of Lead exposure for children (or human beings of any age, for that matter).

Ingestion Pathway Exposure:

  • A primary concern with Lead and Cadmium contamination in sunscreen products is the possibility of toxicant exposure through  ingestion pathways.
  • Ingestion of sunscreen (and the constituent ingredients and contaminants) is likely to happen with the regular / normal / anticipated hand-to-mouth activity of young children, when these products are applied on children’s bodies and faces.
    • Said another way, when you apply sunscreen to young children, that child will inevitably get the product on their hands and will often subsequently put their hands in their mouths (sucking their thumb, licking their fingers after eating finger foods like potato chips, etc.).
  • Even if a sunscreen product is not specifically marketed for use with children, families often buy one sunscreen product to use on all members of the family, regardless of the age of those family members and regardless of any age limits for the use of the product mentioned on the product packaging.
    • This Sky & Sol repeats in their marketing that it is safe for “kids”, safe for “babies” and safe for use by the “whole family”, even though it is not sold expressly as a product intended for use with children.
  • Given the extremely high levels of Lead and Cadmium in this Sky & Sol sunscreen product, it does present a significant potential ingestion concern – especially if traces of this contaminated product are ingested daily (multiple times a day) over the summer months.
  • Already today since publishing this article, several families have shared with us that they have been using this product for years with their youngest children  – specifically because they were led to believe it was so incredibly safe (safe enough to be edible).

Transdermal Pathway Exposure:

  • There is a secondary concern for potential transdermal absorption of at least some of the Lead and Cadmium (and possibly the Arsenic, too) in this Sky & Sol sunscreen.
  • In a mineral-based sunscreen product, Lead and Cadmium are typically carried (along with the Zinc) in an oil base (tallow, seed oil, etc.), which — when  combined with the fact that the product is generally used in hot weather (when pores are open with sweating from heat and outdoor activities),  makes transdermal absorption of the contaminants in this product significantly more likely than with other Lead-contaminated cosmetics products .
  • While there is some solid science supporting this concern (see links below), the possibility of transdermal absorption of Lead and Cadmium from contaminated popular Zinc-based sunscreen products – to my knowledge – has not seen sufficient study [in part due to a lack of specific knowledge about the actual toxicant profiles of products like this, especially sunscreen products made and sold expressly for use by children], and warrants further study.
  • The brand is also aware of this concern (see screenshot directly below):
Relevant studies / links / agency statements include:
  1. 2024: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0048969724025361
    • Considering frequent exposure to these cosmetics or commercial products, special attention is needed to assess the human health risks associated with these xenobiotics due to dermal exposure directly or indirectly”
  2. 2021: https://academic.oup.com/annweh/article/66/3/291/6433554
    • “The literature, while of limited quality, overall strongly suggests inorganic Pb has the potential for dermal uptake in meaningful amounts associated with negative health outcomes based on upper bound diffusion rate estimates.”
  3. 1988: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/004896978890112X
    • “It has been found, however, that finely-powdered lead metal or lead nitrate solution placed on the skin results in rapid absorption of lead, and transport of the metal around the body.”
  4. CDC ATSDR Statement: https://archive.cdc.gov/www_atsdr_cdc_gov/csem/leadtoxicity/exposure_routes.html
    • “Organic lead may be absorbed directly through the skin.”

Lead Safe Mama, LLC’s sunscreen testing initiative will increase the publicly available data, which we hope will – in turn – emphasize the need for further study (precipitating  additional formal scientific inquiry into the concern for transdermal absorption of toxicants — including Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic — from modern sunscreen products).

“I’ve been using this product with my family! What should I do?”

I do expect these test results are going to be fairly upsetting to many people. I also recommend that if you have been using this product, that you should stop using it immediately (if you have been using it for your child or yourself) and consider getting a Blood Lead Level test for your kiddo as well – especially if you have not gotten one recently.

Are you interested in seeing MORE safer choices?

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention). The product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of a concern for heavy metals contamination).

The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for the specific product listed. To see the full original lab report for any of these products, type the brand name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com (and scroll down to the bottom of the related article). All our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.

Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted, and other flavors of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results. Test results only apply to the specific products linked below.

Products on our “safer choices” list are retested periodically (annually or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean, it is removed from the list.

      1. I always reach out to brands before buying since I discovered your blog. I ask them their Certificate of Analysis and they always refuse to do so. Most of the time they also tell me the same thing: “We test non-detect for 1 ppm limit for heavy metals”. Exactly like in the screenshot above.

  1. This result is shocking! I will certainly use your link above to register a complaint with authorities. I hope someone actually listens….

Thanks for all you do Tamara!
