Testing Just Ingredients Cool Mint Remineralizing Tooth Powder for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, & Arsenic with Third Party, Independent, Laboratory Testing

A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

As anticipated (based on our previous testing of clay-based tooth powders done to date, including other samples from this brand), this Just Ingredients Tooth Powder product tested positive for an extremely high level of Lead, a level which is very close to the new regulatory limit (within a rounding margin) for Lead in cosmetics products with the Washington State Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act (TFCA), which became effective as of January 2025. It also tested positive for dangerous levels of Arsenic

As a result of the dangerous levels of toxicants found in this product (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic – scroll down for the full original lab report and the sharable social media graphic with the lab test results), we will be reporting this to the State of Washington as a product of concern that should be investigated further. We will also be reporting this product to the FDA – because of the potential for it to cause long-term harm (through chronic Lead and Arsenic exposure) to the users, even though it is not technically illegal by current FDA standards, which limit Lead in Fluoride-Free toothpaste and tooth powder products to 10,000 parts per billion (10 ppm). 

I have personally worked with many families whose children have had mysterious chronic / persistent low level Lead exposure that was later traced to daily use of a Lead-contaminated, bentonite clay based toothpaste or tooth powder like this one. These Lead and Arsenic -contaminated bentonite clay based tooth powder products should not be used (if you have been using this, you should stop using it immediately and consider asking your doctor about getting tested for heavy metals), and we are working to try to get them outlawed as they are so incredibly dangerous.

“I’ve been using this product with my family! What should I do?”

I do expect these test results are going to be fairly upsetting to many people as this is understood (based on Marketing of the product and brand) to be a “safer” product for families. I recommend that if you have been using this product, that you may want to stop using it immediately (if you have been using it for your child or yourself) and consider getting a Blood Lead Level (BLL)  test for your kiddo as well – especially if you have not gotten one recently. Ruling out an elevated BLL in your child is a good place to start.
