Badger Adventure Mineral Sunscreen Cream (SPF 50) Positive for Lead, Cadmium, & Arsenic With Independent, Third-Party Laboratory Testing
Published June 4, 2025 — Wednesday
A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:
This Badger Adventure Mineral Sunscreen (SPF 50), tested positive for concerning levels of Lead and Cadmium — in addition to traces of Arsenic..
Even though this product is not illegal by current Federal (FDA) Standards, we will be reporting it to the FDA so they are made aware of the concern. Our hope (in reporting this to the FDA) is that this piece of data will be part of a body of evidence that may eventually influence future FDA policy, significantly further restricting the allowable Lead levels in cosmetics products. For products like this (not expressly marketed for use by children), our hope is that the FDA will also eventually require stronger (bolder, more visible) labeling standards indicating these products are not intended for use by children (especially if the FDA is not able to quickly implement new health-protective regulatory limits on the Lead and Cadmium content in these products).
If you would like to join us in reporting this sunscreen product to the FDA (given the significant levels of Cadmium and Lead found), here is the link to do so (if you are comfortable doing so, please include your child’s Blood Lead Level in your FDA complaint if your child has tested positive for Lead in their blood and was using this product): https://www.fda.gov/safety/report-problem-fda
IMPORTANT: All relevant federal agencies agree there is no safe level of Lead exposure for children (or human beings of any age, for that matter). A primary concern with Lead and Cadmium contamination in sunscreen products is the possibility of ingestion hazards that are likely to happen with the regular / normal / anticipated hand-to-mouth activity of young children, when these products are used on children (as — even if the product is not specifically marketed for use with children — families often buy one sunscreen product to use on all members of the family, regardless of the age of those family members and regardless of any age limits for the use of the product noted on the product packaging). Said another way, when you apply sunscreen to young children, that child will inevitably get the product on their hands and will often subsequently put their hands in their mouths.
Given the significant level of Lead and Cadmium in this product (and similar products) this is a potential toxicant-exposure concern — even if only traces of the product are ingested daily over the summer months.
There is also secondary concern for potential transdermal absorption of at least some of the Lead and Cadmium (& possibly the Arsenic too) in these sunscreen products (especially given the fact that the Lead and Cadmium are typically carried in an oil base combined with the fact that the product is generally used in hot weather, making it more likely for possible transdermal absorption as pores open with sweating from heat and outdoor activities).
While there is some solid science supporting this concern, the possibility of transdermal absorption of Lead and Cadmium from contaminated popular Zinc-based sunscreen products does warrant further study, and — to my knowledge — has not seen sufficient study in part due to a lack of specific knowledge about the actual toxicant profiles of products like this, especially sunscreen products made and sold expressly for use by children.
Lead Safe Mama, LLC’s sunscreen testing initiative will increase the publicly available data, which we hope will – in turn – shine light on the need for further study (precipitating formal scientific inquiry into the concern for transdermal absorption of toxicants — including Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic — from modern sunscreen products).
“I’ve been using this product with my family! What should I do?”
I do expect these test results are going to be fairly upsetting to many people. I also recommend that if you have been using this product, that you may want to stop using it immediately (if you have been using it for your child or yourself) and consider getting a Blood Lead Level test for your kiddo as well – especially if you have not gotten one recently.

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention). The product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of a concern for heavy metals contamination).
–
The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for the specific product listed. To see the full original lab report for any of these products, type the brand name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com (and scroll down to the bottom of the related article). All our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
–
Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted, and other flavors of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results. Test results only apply to the specific products linked below.
Products on our “safer choices” list are retested periodically (annually or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean, it is removed from the list.

EWG rated this one as their lowest concern:
https://www.ewg.org/sunscreen/about-the-sunscreens/982895/Badger_Sport_Mineral_Sunscreen_Cream%2C_SPF_40/
We’ve used this one, unfortunately. But more the “Badger Mineral Kids Sunscreen” found here:
https://www.target.com/p/badger-mineral-kids-sunscreen-cream-spf-40-2-9-fl-oz/-/A-80164249
And according to the manufacturer, in the Q&A section, this is tested for heavy metals, and passes FDA (which we know is too lax).
You only tested one specific type from this brand. You need to test every product from a whole line to get a more accurate picture. It could just be one kind from the badger brand.
The testing is funded by you – Lead Safe Mama readers / community members. I think it is unlikely you (and the rest of our readership) will want to fund all of the products from the brand getting tested. If I am mistaen and you personally do want to fund additional products from this brand getting tested, please do let us know. Our budget for testing and reporting is here: https://tamararubin.com/budget/
Our current subsidized rate to help cover the cost of testing and reporting is $495.00 per product.
The test results for this one product give some clear indicators as to the contamination level of the zinc that is likely used in all of their products. Contamination levels of different specific products will vary based on the SPF number, which varies based on the amount of Zinc present.
