I would love to understand more about how to understand the ppb of lead in relation to each tablet…. does each tablet of the multivitamin contain 127ppb of lead?
And how can you determine how much ppb of lead a person is ingesting each day? I don’t think it’s a direct calculation, and it would be valuable to understand how to figure it out.
If I have a cup of coffee and the coffee beans tested at 2 ppb of lead + 1 multivitamin with 127ppb of lead + a bar of chocolate with 75 ppb of lead…. I’m sure that doesn’t mean that I consumed 204ppb of lead, right? How can an actual estimate of lead amounts being consumed be figured out?
I realised that ppb is concentration, not amount. So that still leaves the question of how to determine the actual tota amount of lead being consumed.
I would love to understand more about how to understand the ppb of lead in relation to each tablet…. if each tablet of the multivitamin has a concentration of 127ppb of lead how much lead is actually in each tablet, and what amount is not a risk?
How can there be an action level based on concentration when it doesn’t account for the actual total amount of lead consumed? You could eat a tiny square of chocolate with an extremely high ppb of lead, but then everything else in the diet very low ppb- how would you determine if you’re at risk of high lead intake or not if you can’t add up all of your lead exposures/ingestion each day, which it seems. you cannot do with just knowing the ppb.
There’s no safe level of Lead exposure. All relevant federal agencies are in agreement on this one.
Any amount is a significant risk.
This is why we don’t translate into serving-sized based exposure.
Using serving size based metrics is misguided and dangerous as it does not take into account the concern for exposure from all sources (aggregate exposure, daily – and over a lifetime).
If you have not yet watched my documentary film – I would encourage you to do so, it will help you better understand the concern. Here’s the link: https://youtu.be/lMbhbwMhs1U?si=gp0C-iKVKnhTl5oi
Yes, I watched your excellent film Tamara, and I learned a lot from it.
I do think it is important and valuable to be able to access one’s intake of lead in order to actually determine how much lead exposure is coming from the diet. Since my diet is what I can control, along with what I have in my home environment, I’m interested in making choices that lower my family’s dietary intake of lead. You yourself said you don’t look at all sources of lead intake (like with the coffee you mentioned you like that you didn’t have tested for lead), but as we know from the community in Africa where thousands of people were lead poisoned from eating cassava, I assert it is important to have a sense of actually how much lead I’m taking in regularly so I can make choices to minimize it. And also since I drink coffee regularly, if I knew how much lead is in the coffee I could determine if it is something I might not want to drink every day– but it only makes sense if I have a sense of the total amount of lead I’m consuming from all sources.
All this testing you’re doing is great…..and… if people don’t have any idea of how much lead they’re actually consuming, it’s not possible to make fully informed choices. And people are also left confused on how products become contaminated with lead or what to do about it.
And of course lead contamination is a much bigger issue than trying to choose the least contaminated food products- one where poverty, the global market, and environmental devastation all intersect.
