Chart Comparing Toxicant Profiles of 25 Popular Prenatal Vitamins Tested by with Independent, Third-Party, Laboratory Testing in 2024 & 2025

Lead Safe Mama, LLC’s Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative

The Lead Safe Mama, LLC (LSM) team has been conducting independent, community-funded, scientific testing of consumer goods since 2009. Prior to 2024 our work primarily focused on testing consumer goods (including dishes, toys, household items, furniture, jewelry, etc.) using XRF technology.

In March of 2024 LSM began coordinating independent, third-party, community-collaborative laboratory testing of foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal-care items. Since then we have sent more than 400 community-nominated products to laboratories to have them tested for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic. You can find all of our published lab reports for products we have tested to date on this link.

This laboratory testing initiative is driven by the interests and priorities of the greater Lead Safe Mama community (we had nearly 2.3 million unique individual readers here on this website in the 2024 calendar year alone – and also have a strong social media presence on both Instagram and Facebook)  —  Lead Safe Mama community members nominate products for laboratory testing and then the LSM community uses crowd-funding (including through GoFundMe) to raise the funds to cover the costs related to testing and reporting of these nominated products. This is how the prenatal vitamin products listed in the chart below were chosen for testing, and how the testing and reporting was paid for. This unique model of community-directed (and funded) testing and reporting helps to ensure that this initiative is truly free of corporate influence, and strongly rooted in science (and without bias).

The intention behind this initiative is twofold: 1.) to identify lab-tested safer products, to help consumers make science-informed choices regarding which products to use with their families, and 2.) to identify products with egregious levels of toxicants that we can then (collectively) report to public agencies (including the FDA) in an effort to get those products recalled.

A fundamental principle of the work of LSM is the understanding (and agreement with the scientific and medical consensus) that there is no safe level of Lead exposure for humans, and that we (as consumers) should demand that companies be held accountable for manufacturing and selling lead-contaminated products, especially products marketed and sold for use by children.

We have not yet found a toxicant-free prenatal vitamin product (using independent laboratory testing with low thresholds of detection of 5 ppb Lead, 5 ppb Cadmium, 5 ppb Mercury, and 10 ppb Arsenic).

Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

The above graphic is a chart comparing the toxicant profiles of 25 prenatal vitamins that have been tested through the community collaborative (community directed and funded) independent, third-party, laboratory testing Lead Safe Mama, LLC is coordinating. Key Points to Consider:

  • There are almost no reasonable (health-protective) safety limits proposed for toxicant contamination (heavy metal contamination specifically) of foods and supplements consumed by adults (or by the general population) in the United States.
  • Any available proposed safety thresholds (and guidance) for foods and supplements consumed by adults are not currently set at levels protective of human health given practical/ actual consumption patterns of foods (vs. manufacturer defined serving sizes).
    • The above point is especially important given children eat all foods, not just foods marketed for consumption by children (for example: Find me a pre-teen that won’t go through an entire 5-ounce/ 5-serving bag of potato chips in one sitting)!
  • Serving-sized based metrics do not take into account the potential for exposure (for any given person) from all exposure-sources throughout any given day.
  • Serving-sized based metrics do not take into account the fact that all relevant federal agencies agree that there is no safe level of Lead exposure for human beings — especially for pregnant women and developing babies.
  • Our focus is (as always) on the health of babies children.
  • By applying the standards proposed by the Baby Food Safety Act of 2021 to all foods and supplements, (especially because supplements are regulated as food products, not medicines) we are working more in-line with standards that protect human health (for all!) given all scientific and medical experts agree there is no safe level of Lead exposure for human beings.
  • Said another way: You would never be eating a snack chip out of a bag and say to your 5-year-old child “this product is only marketed for consumption by adults, so you cannot eat it.” That would be ridiculous. Kids eat what we eat, babies are impacted by what their pregnant mothers consume, so everything that goes into our bodies in an attempt to nourish us and support our health and well being should be appropriate for any age consumer (not just a demographic designated by the manufacturer based on irrelevant age-group related toxicity standards for a specific product or ingredient).
  • Remember: There is no safe level of Lead exposure for human beings. Period.
    • This is a non-negotiable point that everyone in the scientific and medical community — everyone who researches Lead poisoning — agrees with.

Below is an EXPANDING list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items) that have tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention). The product-examples below clearly demonstrate that it is possible for companies to manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of the concern for heavy metals contamination).

The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested can be found in the lab report for the specific product listed. To see the full  original lab report for any of these products, type the brand name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com (and scroll down to the bottom of the related article). All of these lab reports can also be found linked on our lab-testing landing page – here.

Flavors tested are noted, and other flavors of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results. Test results only apply to the specific products linked below.

  1. Thank you for your amazing work here! Please test the FullWell prenatal vitamin whenever you have an opening for a new product! They claim to use higher standards than industry requirements, but I can see from this study that may not mean much.. big thanks again for this resource!

  2. Hi Tamara,
    Thank you for this report
Do you have any plans to test Elevit prenatal or Elevit breastfeeding?

    Thank you in advance

  3. Perelel prenatals are amazing company currently taking them..they have 5 different stages of pills pre packed! Conception, 1 st trimester, 2nd trimester, 3rd trimester and postpartum … they were 3rd party tested for all metals and all negative. Each trimester you need different vitamins for each stage. Also I love how they have a high folate count bc you need that for proper umbilical cord growth which most prenatals on the market are under 800. This is 1800mg which is the same strength as prescription which is amazing!!!! Can not speak enough about them.

    1. Their First Trimester is almost funded – we are testing each pill type separately, so we will have information that may translate to other stages. Here’s the fundraiser if you would like to contribute to the testing and reporting costs for this product:

We also launched this one but it hasn’t had much support yet:

  4. I put prenatals in the search bar. And scrolled title after title…. Lead. Lead. Lead. All these popular brands. All these expensive and better than the norm brands. And all I see is positive for this and that. Tamara, have you found any prenatal that is safe to take at this point? Because I got depressed scrolling through.

  5. You say to ask for pharmaceutical grade prenatal vitamins from doctor….what is this??? They seem to not prescribe because prenatals are found OTC. Help:(
