SAFETY ALERT — This set of hair clips was purchased on Amazon and found by a Lead Safe Mama community member to test positive for Lead in the paint using a reactive agent home test kit that is specifically designed for testing for Lead in painted items (test kit: https://amzn.to/404NaGj).
–
Lead Safe Mama, LLC purchased a set for follow-up testing and (on October 16, 2024) using XRF technology, confirmed Lead levels in the paint on these toddler hair clips to be as high as 31,000 ppm in the red and white products (anything over 90 ppm Lead in the paint, glaze, or coating, is illegal in an item intended for use by children).
–
Most of the colors for the clips in this set did not have Lead paint, however a dangerous amount of microparticulate Lead dust could easily wear off from those that do to the others in the box (with abrasion caused by shipping), so all the clips should be considered possibly Lead-contaminated and the whole package should be discarded (including all colors).
–
If you have this product, you should report it by following this link https://www.saferproducts.gov — then throw your set out (and/or ask for a refund from the Amazon seller).
–

Sara Schoen says
Thank you Tamara. What would be done with the results of a blood lead test? Would they tell a parent if a child needs to eat more garlic? Are they potentially actionable in any other way?
Karl Malden says
Depends on how elevated the BLL test is. Dietary and lifestyle changes have been shown to lower blood lead levels over time. Chelation therapy is kind of the worst-case scenario treatment, and my understanding is that’s akin to chemotherapy in that it’s effective but side effects make the child feel sick and miserable.
Sara Schoen says
Thank you, Karl. If a parent doesn’t want to pursue chelation therapy for their child, is there a reason to test a child’s blood for lead?
Clara says
It is highly important to test your child for lead because if they have been lead poisoned. The BEST thing you can do is make SURE to remove ALL the lead exposure from the child so the lead exposure does not worsen or continue.
Sara Schoen says
Thanks Clara. Why is it highly important to test your child for lead? Shouldn’t we be removing all sources of lead exposure for all children regardless of previous exposure?
Brenda Schildz says
You may have listed and I didn’t notice, but is your standards that is used per California law or from another reference? I am fairly new subscriber and appreciate your service.
Thank you.
