Things From Canada – Orange Mayfair & Jackson Ceramic Mixing Bowl: 249 ppm Cadmium (75 is illegal in Denmark)

When tested with an XRF instrument this orange and white “Mayfair & Jackson” ceramic mixing bowl (sent to me by a reader in Canada) had the following readings:

White glaze on the inside of the bowl:

  • Lead (Pb): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Arsenic (As): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Cadmium (Cd): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Mercury (Hg): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Antimony (Sb): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Barium (Ba): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Chromium (Cr): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Selenium (Se): Non-Detect / Negative

Orange glaze on the outside of the bowl:

  • Lead (Pb): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Arsenic (As): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Cadmium (Cd): 249 +/- 20 ppm
  • Mercury (Hg): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Antimony (Sb): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Barium (Ba): 1,718 +/- 112 ppm
  • Chromium (Cr): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Selenium (Se): 101 +/- 19 ppm

Cadmium at this level on the outside of a mixing bowl (a bowl not typically used with the heat of cooking, and the outside of the bowl – which is not subjected to acids like lemon juice and vinegar) is not likely a problem that would cause human exposure. HOWEVER Cadmium is a known carcinogen and I prefer not to have anything with any Cadmium in my home, especially in my cooking environment (and especially when there are so many Cadmium-free and Lead-free choices available.)

Unglazed ceramic rim on the bottom of the bowl:

  • Lead (Pb): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Arsenic (As): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Cadmium (Cd): 26 +/- 7 ppm*
  • Mercury (Hg): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Antimony (Sb): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Barium (Ba): 217 +/- 45 ppm*
  • Chromium (Cr): Non-Detect / Negative
  • Selenium (Se): Non-Detect / Negative

*Since the rim of the bowl does not fill the full scope of the XRF instrument the positive readings for Cadmium and Barium are likely from the instrument picking up a bit of the orange glaze on either side of the unglazed ceramic rim.
