Vintage (year unknown) plastic Rubbermaid mug: Lead-free! If you know what year this was made, please let me know.

When tested with an XRF instrument the yellow plastic Rubbermaid brand mug pictured here was negative for all of the main toxicants I look for in my work: Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, Mercury and Antimony.

If you know what year this was made (or if you purchased a similar mug and know what year you purchased it), please let me know and I will update this post with that information.

The full XRF reading for this mug (in consumer goods mode) was as follows:

  • Barium (Ba): 134 +/- 83 ppm
  • Zinc (Zn): 100 +/- 8 ppm
  • Nickel (Ni): 13 +/- 7 ppm
  • Iron (Fe): 72 +/- 17 ppm
  • Titanium (Ti): 2,034 +/- 242 ppm

Metals not listed above were not detected. All tests were done for a minimum of 60 seconds with the XRF testing in Consumer Goods mode (giving readings in ppm). Test results are science-based and replicable.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you for reading and for sharing my posts.

  1. I still have a couple of the yellow 16 oz glasses. My sister just asked me the same question … “What was the name of the dog food these came in”.

  2. I have 3 and one tumbler. Guess I will list on eBay as we no longer use. Thanks reminding where they came from!

  3. I was just sent a picture from my sister of my kids drinking from the mugs at my house when they were little. I got them free from the bags of Mainstay dog food. I used to have the whole set but don’t know where the bowls went. Still have the 2 mugs. I got mine late 1980’s to early 1990’s I remember that because it was after my daughter was born (1986)

  4. They came in Purina dog food in the 80’s. Dishes, cups small and large, and bowls. I have at least 20 of them

  5. I agree, these came in Purina dog food bags in the 1980’s. I still have some of each thing they gave. (Mugs, cups, dishes and bowls.) Those things have worn like iron and still look great! I am So Glad to hear they are safe since my whole family ate out of them when I was young and then I used them for my own children! Thank you for what you do!

  6. I wondered for a while what brand of dog food these came with. All I know is my parents still have a few of the small cups & at least one large one. I remember thinking it was kind of weird to give away free cups, bowls, etc in bags of dog food, even as a kid.
