Sunsella Green Silicone Vegetable Steamer. Made In China. Purchased new on Amazon in July of 2018. Please note: this thing REEKS of chemicals. The smell coming out of the package was quite overwhelming. Not all chemicals are metals or have metal components, so not all chemicals are detectable with an XRF instrument.
The XRF metals reading for this item are:
- Barium (Ba): 832 +/- 326 ppm
- It was negative (ND/Non-Detect) for Lead (Pb), Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd) and Mercury (Hg.)
The concern with a lot of silicone items I have tested in the past two years is that we often find trace levels of cadmium in the products (usually below 30 ppm.) This amount of cadmium is considered safe by all standards, but I still question the usefulness of the standards when these levels are being found in cookware items, children toys and personal care products (like menstrual cups) – especially given that cadmium is a known carcinogen.
As always, thank you for reading. If you have any questions, please comment on this post and I will do my best to answer them as soon as possible!
