When tested with an XRF instrument the Christmas tree on this Homer Laughlin Fiestaware “Made In The U.S.A”. mug was non-detect (ND) for Lead (Pb). The Christmas tree area did test positive for cadmium (Cd) at 61 +/- 9 ppm.
The bottom of mug was also had the following XRF readings:
- Lead (Pb): 23 +/- 12 ppm (within safe range)
- Cadmium (Cd): 32+/- 6 ppm
The levels of Lead and Cadmium found in this mug are considered low “trace” levels (likely contaminants of the colorants not intentionally added ingredients). The Lead level is considered safe by all standards and the Cadmium level is considered safe by most standards.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Oh gosh! I have this pattern in matching plates…. I’m wondering since food would certainly be touching the painted portion if it is worth keeping these around. They are so lovely and festive, but I am extremely disappointed to be discovering all the unsafe kitchen items in our home.

Thank you Tamara!
Did the NON patterned Fiestaware test high for heavy metals as well? But yikes, We’ve been using the” Memory Lane” china for at least 12 years and I have had issues with high lead levels. I’m looking for a truly safe product.

Hi again Kathy – here is how you can send a dish in to me for testing if you want more information about your Memory Lane china:

…Also, if modern non patterned Fiestaware is generally safe concerning all heavy metals, is white any safer?

Hi Kathy,
There are a lot of examples on the blog – and each color has a different toxicant profile (including the newer plain colors.) Click the “Fiesta” tab at the top of this post to see other examples I have tested and reported on.
Thanks for commenting.

i have an extensive collection of Homer Laughlin dishes. It sounds like they all contain lead. I’m assuming I need to get rid of all of them. Examples of about 60 designs are on shelves around my bedroom.
