When tested with an XRF instrument, this NuSpin Zoomie Straw Cup, purchased new in 2017 had the following readings:
Main plastic body of cup
(including “painted” decorative elements):
- Lead (Pb): Non-detect (ND) / Negative
- Cadmium (Cd): Non-detect (ND) / Negative
- Mercury (Hg): Non-detect (ND) / Negative
- Arsenic (As): Non-detect (ND) / Negative
Clear flexible silicone sippy straw:
- Lead (Pb): Non-detect (ND) / Negative
- Cadmium (Cd): 17 +/- 6 ppm**
- Mercury (Hg): Non-detect (ND) / Negative
- Arsenic (As): Non-detect (ND) / Negative
Read more about cadmium concerns here. Quite a few silicone baby items that I have tested in recent year have been positive for trace** levels of Cadmium (see more examples here.) This level of Cadmium is considered safe by all standards – yet, personally, in my opinion baby products that are intended to go in the mouth should never have any levels of any toxicants (even if by current federal standards the level is considered “a safe amount.”)
I am not aware of anyone else (any other testing organization, nonprofit or regulatory agency) investigating these findings and discussing this concern.
**”Trace” means it is not an additive to the product, but a contaminant at a very low level.

Would this be one you would give to your kids if they were younger or no bc of the trace cadmium? I’m having a hard time picking a straw style sippy cup- lifefactory only makes a stainless one-would that be a good option? Any help would be so appreciated!

Hi Susan,
I’m not really too keen on anything with Cadmium going in the mouth – so I would choose not to use these with my kids.
