A pill to “cure” lead poisoning?
Interesting article and development (linked below), please do click through and give it a read! I agree with the critics quoted who have concerns about the practical limits of the possible ameliorative potential of this “pill.”
My son Avi was just 7 months old when he was poisoned, and his brain was rapidly developing at the time. As we didn’t know he was exposed at the time, he was neither tested nor diagnosed until nearly three months after he was poisoned. By the time we were fortunate enough to be able to eventually get a full neuropsychological evaluation by a qualified specialist, Avi was already seven years old — and the doctor observed the distinct fingerprint of very substantial damage caused by early childhood lead exposure.
We have since been told by many more specialists that this damage is permanent and irreversible – to multiple areas, structures and systems throughout his brain (and body.)
It’s very unlikely in a scenario like ours that a pill like this would help “cure” (reverse) the damage to his brain, but I love the idea and promise that it may be able to help reduce the impacts experienced by some children — perhaps poisoned under different circumstances. If they are immediately diagnosed right after being poisoned, maybe? – a statistically rare scenario. One hypothetical example might be that of a child who is observed swallowing a metallic bauble…the child is rushed to the hospital, where the item is purged, tested on the spot and found to contain lead — and the treatment given right away to reverse the possible neurological impact of the brief exposure?
