When tested with an XRF instrument this simple white Serene pattern Carefree True China (Made in the USA by Syracuse) had the following reading:

  • Lead: 30,600 ppm

For context: the amount of Lead that is considered illegal and unsafe in a modern item made today and intended for use by children is anything 90 ppm Lead (or higher) in the paint, glaze or coating or anything 100 ppm Lead (or higher) in the substrate. There are no safety limits set for XRF detectable Lead in dishware (modern or vintage.)

  1. I have a set of Syracuse Trend dishes that were like the ones used on the Santa Fe railroad. I drink out of the cups everyday. Are they safe?
