April 2025 Free Community Zoom Call (90 minutes) for Los Angeles Area Fire Impacted Families

We created this page so that we would have a place to link resources for LA fire-impacted families who are participating in our free (pro bono) 90-minute community zoom call in April of 2025. In this call, attendees will have the opportunity to ask lead-poisoning prevention focused questions for issues specifically related to the community Lead exposure created with the burning of Lead-painted homes and other structures in the January 2025 fires.

A Quick Note From Tamara

On August 16, 2002 my home burned in a total-loss fire. I had a medically compromised two week-old baby son (my son, AJ) at the time — as well as a kiddo who had just turned six years old. Three years later to the day (on August 16, 2005), my two youngest children (a now 3 year-old AJ, and my seven- months-old Avi) were acutely Lead-poisoned (when we hired a contractor to repaint the exterior of our home).

  • Since 2011 I have been a full-time childhood Lead poisoning prevention advocate and activist.
  • In January of 2018 I founded Lead Safe Mama, LLC to formalize this work creating awareness and community around the issue of childhood Lead poisoning prevention and consumer goods safety.
  • Given my personal experience (both surviving – and  managing the impacts of  – a total loss  house fire as well as surviving and managing the acute lead poisoning of my children) and professional experience in this area, I am personally uniquely qualified to guide families impacted by house fires (their own, or fires in their community) through the trauma and steps of recovery related to toxics exposure concerns generated by burning structures.
  • I often work with fire-impacted families, coaching them in  taking science-based actions to ensure their homes and communities are safe for their families — specifically safe from the concern for Lead exposure — to the extent possible should they choose to remain in the impacted community.

Upcoming May 2025 Outreach Event: Free Soil Testing

Lead Safe Mama, LLC is currently working on coordinating several days of free-to-the-public outreach events in the Los Angeles areas impacted by the January 2025 fires. We are coordinating this initiative as an opportunity to offer FREE soil testing – using XRF technology measuring down to single digit parts per million (along with free Lead poisoning prevention education) to as many residents as possible in fire-impacted areas.

We are looking for local volunteers to help us coordinate these events and we are also looking for one-or-more public spaces to host the events (across three-or-more days in the second half of May). Appropriate locations: library, hospital, clinic, school, university, etc.

Please contact Serina@LeadSafeMama.com if you have resources to contribute to these events. Thank you.  This initiative is being undertaken pro bono by  Tamara Rubin and the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Team.

  • We are seeking the following donated resources to support this soil testing initiative:
    • Lodging & flights for the Lead Safe Mama Team (Southwest miles would be excellent!)
    • Location for the event day(s) with the following requirements
      • Covered Space (indoors or outside in shade)
        • Outreach events will be 3 or 4 hours long each day depending on the availability of the location
      • Electricity
      • 3 or 4 chairs (folding chairs are fine)
      • 3 or more Lead-free tables (8 foot modern plastic folding tables are good)
      • Parking for Attendees
    • Refreshments for attendees
      • Snacks
      • Water / Other Beverages
