Testing & (Gently) Smashing Dishes

5/10/2026
Hi friends!

Happy Mother’s Day!

What china pattern is your mother using?
How about your grandmother?
Did you know you can look up your china patterns on our website to see how much Lead they have!?

Our Latest Project – Good Will Test & Smash!

We have posted FOUR videos in the past 24 hours showing XRF testing (and smashing / disposal) of toxic dishes. You can find all of these videos on Instagram, Facebook or YouTube in case you are curious. Watch with sound on to learn random new factoids about different types of dishes in these short videos (each is about 2 minutes long).

These videos have been posted on Facebook, Instagram & You Tube (each includes XRF Test Results for the dish shown) — If you do pop over to YouTube to watch these, please subscribe to our YouTube channel while you are over there, it’s FREE! As of this moment we have 5,579 YouTube subscribers and about 231 videos posted. Thank you!

If you are new here you might not know that we have been testing dishes and reporting on their toxicant levels since 2009. If you look at our logo you will see a baby bottle, a tea cup and a key — three common objects we often find to be heavily contaminated with Lead (nearly all keys, almost all vintage dishes and many new ceramic ones too, and many modern glass baby bottles with painted markings specifically).

As always you can look up your dishes on our website to see if we have tested them (to see what the test results are / to see how much Lead they have on the food-contact surface specifically).

When you start your search, please make sure to spell the product name correctly as you enter it in the search bar. Given the name of the pattern is not always noted on a dish, it is best to type in the name of the brand and then look through the examples from that brand that we have tested (examples: Fiesta, Corelle, Lenox, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, etc.) If you don’t find you exact pattern, you may find a similar one that will likely have similar test results (based on brand, age of product, color of product, material used, country of origin, etc.)

There is a search bar at the top of every page of Lead Safe Mama dot com to get you started in this inquiry, and we also have a landing page which lists and links many of the brands we have tested. Here’s that link: https://tamararubin.com/2018/11/dishes/

You can also search our archives by other details – for example: “Made in Mexico” or “Made in Germany” or “White China” or “Made in Ohio” 🙂

Here also is the link to our Lead-Free Only, Shopping Only website – which includes quite a few Lead-free dish selections: http://www.ShopLeadSafeMama.com

While we have been focusing on the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative since 2024, we actually started doing XRF testing and reporting 15 years before then! You can read more about the concern for Lead in dishes and pottery on this link: https://tamararubin.com/topics/does-vintage-and-new-functional-pottery-and-dishware-have-unsafe-levels-of-lead/

While most of the dishes we have tested and reported on have been sent in for testing by members of our online community (and we are playing catch up on doing a bunch of that testing and reporting this weekend as well), I always enjoy popping over to Good Will to grab good examples from their shelves that I can share with the community in videos. Buying toxic products off the shelves at Good Will also helps to ensure that no family will buy them (and accidentally poison themselves). In a perfect world I would have THOUSANDS of dollars to dedicate just to this side-project, removing toxic dishes from Good Will shelves so they cannot poison families in the future.

In the meantime, I would very much like to pop over to Good Will today or tomorrow and save even a small group of people from buying toxic dishes and bringing them home to their families!

If we can raise the funds today, I would like to spend about $100 on dishes to test and smash (making more videos like I have made before over the years, including the four videos posted in the past 24 hours that are linked above).

At the moment wee are out of funds for this project (after yesterday’s haul, four videos posted, and three more to go), so need your support to keep doing this (it’s so much cheaper than the food and supplement testing and makes a big impact!) Yesterday we spent $32.00 at Good Will and were able to purchase seven different examples of toxic products (we will be publishing the remaining three videos over the course of the day today).

Please contribute something to help us with this initiative. Even just $5.00 will help us buy a bundle of dishes (there’s no sales tax in Oregon!) Thank you!
