Testing Druera Ceylon Cinnamon Powder For Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic

A Quick Note From Tamara Rubin

This past Fall — as we headed into the holiday season — we received quite a lot of requests to test and report on this Druera Ceylon Cinnamon Powder product. We had promised to have it tested and to report the results when we passed a certain goal in our Patreon membership — as a bit of a Patreon Member Appreciation gift. If you are not yet a member of our Patreon community, please do join us there — we share most lab reports there before we share them on social media and you can join for FREE or with a small monthly contribution in support of our work: https://www.patreon.com/leadsafemama/membership

The reason so many people were requesting that we test and report on this exact product is because the marketing from this company was so very aggressive in stating their awareness of Lead concerns. They specifically promised in their advertising that any of this powdered Ceylon cinnamon purchased before mid-December of 2025 would be from a batch that specifically had tested non-detect for Lead (with testing done by the company themselves), and that this batch would be sold out by December 15th.

In response, we purchased this product for testing on December 5, 2025 (well before their stated deadline) and were able to send it to the lab for testing in mid-January 2026.

WHAT A GIMMICK!
That’s how you get people to buy your Lead-contaminated garbage products! — in 5 steps….
  1. Acknowledge a product class or type may have Lead!
  2. Include proactive Lead education awareness graphics on your website (see examples below), to make customers think you are a forward-thinking company working  towards making a difference in the world.
  3. Acknowledge that other batches of your product have tested positive for Lead (and publish those lab reports on your website!)
  4. Share that you have ONE BATCH (just ONE batch!) of your Ceylon Cinnamon that tested clean for Lead (in fact not only was this batch Lead-free,  your company lab report showed the product batch was non-detect for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic! – All four primary heavy metals of concern!) , and that customers must order that product before December 15, 2025 or the inventory of the Lead-free batch  will be sold out.
  5. Instead of providing a Lead-free product, send the customers who order before December 15th Lead-contaminated product (direct from Ceylon!), because A.) How would they possibly know it is Lead contaminated, and B.) How likely are they to return a product to an overseas distributor (is that even possible?)

So – given this product actually did test positive for concerning levels of Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic — I would say Druera wins the prize for “scammer strategy of the year” for 2025. We should really start awarding prizes like this each year, lol!

Please check out each of the images captured from their website (in early December when we ordered the product) below – please take a moment to actually read the greenwashed text on each image. And then remind yourself: Friends Don’t Let Friends Buy Cinnamon there are no uncontaminated sources of Cinnamon that have been identified to date, and even Ceylon Cinnamon can be heavily contaminated. If you watch some of the videos online about harvesting Cinnamon (as I did this winter in preparing to test this product and write this article) it will become very evident how the product is contaminated through the harvesting process (in addition to any contamination that may happen as a result of the growing process!)

My personal advice on the cinnamon conundrum
(how we are handling it in my home)

  1. Don’t buy cinnamon products (we’re not buying any dried, packaged processed spices anymore – ever since we started this lab testing initiative actually).
  2. For baking and cooking at home find flavor alternatives. Honey in hot milk can add a nice complex flavor to make up for a lack of cinnamon for example.
  3. When you eat out — don’t freak out!  — If there is a little cinnamon sprinkled on a dessert you are eating, don’t worry about it – it’s a rare thing (since it is not in your home), and it’s not going to kill you. If you get a heaping amount of cinnamon doused on top of the foam for your latte in a restaurant (something that did happen to me recently – much to the horror of my kids!), maybe scoop that off and leave it on the saucer (as I did).
  4. STOP using cinnamon as a supplement — especially Ceylon cinnamon. The alleged health-beneficial properties of taking Ceylon cinnamon as a supplement are not rooted in reliable science as they do not take into account the potential for harm that can be caused by the daily consumption of the contaminants in modern cinnamon.

Do you have an old tin of your grandmother’s cinnamon lying around the house as a keepsake? With the original cinnamon inside? (I used to have all of my grandmother’s but no longer have them – which is why I ask this). If you do have some cinnamon that is more than 20 or 30 years old (in the original package), please let me know. I would be very interested in sending a sample to the lab to see if it is equally contaminated or if — in fact — as I expect may be the case, it is much cleaner than modern cinnamon today. Thank you!

While we purchased this Druera Ceylon Cinnamon for testing on December 5, 2026 — the lab report below is from January 14, 2026. I do apologize that we were not able to publish this lab report sooner — over the past several months our work has been sidelined a bit by our need to deal with the legal battle to see justice served related to the orchestrated smear campaign created to try to take down our business. You can read more about that here.

Who paid for testing and reporting on this product?

Testing & reporting for this product was not funded.

We will be allocating undesignated gifted funds (given via GoFundMe, Patreon, and other sources) to help cover the costs of testing and reporting for this product. Thank you in advance for your contributions!

If you appreciate these articles and would like to help Lead Safe Mama, LLC continue testing and publishing lab reports — like this one — please consider  supporting  our work by joining our Patreon channel with a small monthly donation if you have the means to do so. Any amount helps — our current average paid member contributes about $3.94 per month [just three dollars and thirty cents], but you can also join us on Patreon for free. Lead Safe Mama Patreon members are among the first to access articles and lab reports as soon as they’re published, and that alone is a great reason to join.

All articles on Lead Safe Mama dot com are now ad-free!

Per the graphic above, as of April 3, 2026, 668 paid Patreon members contribute a combined $2,635.00 per month (an average gift of $3.94 each). Our short-term goal is reaching $3,300 in monthly Patreon gifts, equivalent to 838 members giving our average gift of just $3.94 each, so we can help offset some of the critical revenue we have given up by canceling our Mediavine advertising contract in February 2026. That decision (giving up our advertising contract) made all Lead Safe Mama articles easier for you to read, freeing the entire website from randomly served up in-article and pop-up ads! Please consider joining us with a gift of at least $3.94 a month, or whatever you can afford — we just need 169 more Patreon members to join us at this level to meet this goal. Thank you!

How does this testing and reporting work in general?
  1. With few exceptions, products are normally nominated for testing by our online community. You can learn more about the nomination process at this link.
  2. Testing and reporting for most nominated products is funded through dedicated GoFundMe campaigns, while some is covered by generous contributions from individual sponsors.
  3. We also frequently test important and/or high-interest products before funding is secured, and we welcome contributions to help cover those costs, making it possible for us to continue this important work.
  4. We purchase products for testing either directly from the manufacturer, or from a local brick and mortar store, or from the manufacturer’s store on Amazon. We are always very careful to make sure we only purchase authentic products for testing (never counterfeit products).
  5. In a clean environment (which has been confirmed to be free of ambient toxicants that may impact test results in any way), we decant the product into sterile containers (containers which are purchased from a medical supply company and are sealed, sterile, and individually packed to preserve sterility).
    • We submit products in this way (vs. in their original packaging) to eliminate the potential for any real or perceived bias from the lab.
      • Note: We did experience some lab-related bias early on in our initiative (2024) that contributed to our choice to switch labs to prevent that from happening again.
    • We keep samples of each tested product in storage for six months or longer in case the manufacturer challenges our test results and we need to provide any evidence related to the product, purchase information, or packaging of the product.
  6. Batches of products are processed for testing between two and three times each month and hand delivered to the lab for testing (the lab we are currently using as our primary lab is located in the Portland, Oregon metro area).
    • We have been consistently testing 20 to 30 products each month over the past two years.
    • Products are submitted to the lab with paperwork that includes a word or phrase code to identify what the product is, without including brand-specific information for that product — for example “sensitive toothpaste”, without including the brand or flavor of the toothpaste.
  7. Lab reports are then published in full here on this website, along with an article that gives some context to the test results when relevant. The full original lab report is always included at the very bottom of each article.
    • The lab report is the specific lab test results for a single sample of the product.
    • The testing and reporting we do is NOT serving-sized based, as all relevant federal agencies agree with the consensus in the scientific and medical communities that there is no safe level of Lead exposure and serving-size based metrics for evaluating Lead exposure concerns are therefore outdated and not relevant.
    • We report the results of the testing we do in Parts Per Billion (ppb). Parts per billion measurements of the presence of a toxicant apply to any amount of that product (any serving size or quantity of a product).
      • For example if a product tests positive for 1,500 ppb Lead this means that one teaspoon of that product would have 1,500 ppb Lead and one cup of that product would also have 1,500 ppb — the ppb  measurement unit is similar to using a percentage and is applicable to any quantity of the noted product. Said another way: 1% of a quantity can be applied to any quantity of a product regardless of how much of the product there is.
  8. Lab test results for products tested through the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative typically and consistently match the lab test results of the same products when the manufacturer tests and publicly reports on the testing of their products, however most manufacturers of consumable products deceptively report their test results in Parts Per Million (ppm), not ppb — making the toxicant levels found in their products seem less concerning (because they are effectively using the wrong unit of measure).
    • One PPM is the same as 1,000 PPB. [More on that here.]
    • Products that may be ingested by humans  (intentionally ingested – like food – or accidentally ingested – like lipstick, toothpaste, and sunscreen) should be evaluated for the presence of toxicants down to single digit parts per billion levels in order to evaluate safety.
    • PPM evaluation of toxicant concerns in ingested products is not sufficiently precise enough of a measurement to determine safety (or lack thereof) for ingested products.
  9. Here is our budget for testing and reporting on a single product.
    • Our costs include both the cost for testing and for reporting on the test results — as well as an allocation of overhead costs specifically related to the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative

Our Lab Tested Safer Choices list — the result of Lead Safe Mama, LLC’s Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative, featuring products that either tested “non-detect” across the board or safe by all current and proposed standards — is available here. This list currently includes 120 products, with more added as we identify them. The most recent version of our Lab Tested Safer Choices List (as of the date of publishing this article) is also below — scroll down.

For those new to the work of Lead Safe Mama, LLC

Tamara Rubin is a multiple-federal-award-winning independent advocate for childhood Lead poisoning prevention and consumer goods safety, and a documentary filmmaker. She is also a mother of Lead-poisoned children (two of her four sons were acutely Lead-poisoned in 2005).

A “spacer graphic” like the one above can be found in each of our articles that include the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. The graphic differs depending on which version of the list is below it. The Leprechaun with Shamrock graphic above (with the pink border) is our newest spacer for the March 2026 update of this Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. If the graphic is different when you see this list in any article (a pumpkin, sun, leaf, rainbow, flower, turkey, Christmas ornament, or shamrock), that means it is an earlier version of the Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

While the date of the list, as it was last updated, is included in the text below it, we also wanted to introduce the visual tool that we use to identify the latest version of our lab-tested safer choices list. Lead Safe Mama team members strive to update the list with the current spacer graphic on all older articles, indicating that the most recent list of safer choices is below. However, they may not have had a chance to update every copy yet. Please be patient! Thank you.

Are you interested in seeing MORE safer choices?

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) for which the lab reports showed “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention).

  • These 120 product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of concerns for heavy metals contamination).
  • The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for each specific product. To see the full, original lab report for any of these products, type the brand or product name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com and scroll down to the bottom of the related article. The original lab report can always be found at the very bottom of each related article. Most of our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
    • This landing page is updated weekly (most weeks) and is a good page to bookmark and check back on periodically if you want the latest test results.
  • Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted in the list below (and on all of our related articles). Other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results.
    • Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.
    • Test results are PRODUCT SPECIFIC, not BRAND SPECIFIC.
      • One should never assume that all products from a specific brand are clean just because one or more products from that specific brand came back with clean test results.

Products on our “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” list are retested periodically (annually if possible, or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean (non-detect for all, or safe-by-all standards) with a second round of lab analysis, it is removed from the list. If you have questions about a product that was removed from this list, please use the search bar at the top of the page to see more on that product, including its most recent test results. Products previously on this list that have since been removed are also noted at the very bottom (three products currently fall in that category).

Not A “Recommended Products List”

In general this list should not be seen as a list of product recommendations. This list is — instead — simply and expressly a list of products that tested clean (non-detect for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic) when sent in to third party independent labs for scientific testing.

Some examples:

  • As a mother of a child with reactive airway disease, I would NEVER under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES recommend the use of any essential oil products, yet there is an essential oil product in this list.
  • I personally don’t take any supplements and believe the entire supplement industry is just a money grab — yet there are quite a few supplements on the list below (because they were nominated for testing by all of you!) You will never ever find me recommending a supplement product.
  • I don’t use sunscreens and would never recommend a particular sunscreen. The two sunscreens that tested clean for heavy metals are chemical sunscreens, so that is also problematic for reasons outside of the heavy metals concerns, yet they are on the list below.

What you choose to do with the information in this list is up to you! All of the products in this list were nominated for testing by members of the greater Lead Safe Mama online community.

It is extremely rare that we — here at Lead Safe Mama, LLC — go out of our way to recommend specific products. We have however added a section of products we would expressly “not recommend” because of bad reviews, health concerns, and negative feedback from the community. These products are still on our lab tested safer choices list as readers still may choose to use them if they are looking for a product in that category (given they had clean test results when tested for heavy metals).

“Lab Tested Safer Choices”
Not currently recommended

These are products that tested clean (across the board) when tested for heavy metals (so they also demonstrate that the levels we are striving for through this movement are achievable), but they are otherwise products that we (here at Lead Safe Mama, LLC) specifically do not recommend for reasons outside of heavy metals testing concerns.

For more information, please read our related articles specific to the products (enter the product name in the search bar at the top of any page of our website, or look for the product image on this landing page – and click through to the article), and do your own research before choosing these products. Reason products may be on this list: excessive plastic packaging, predatory subscription model for purchasing, consistently bad product reviews. You may still choose to purchase these products, no one is going to judge you! Now you know they are free of heavy metals (or were free of heavy metals when they were last tested!) We do not plan on re-testing these particular products given the considerations noted above.

Section #22
Products Removed from the Above “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” List Due To Re-Test Results

The three products in the numbered list below were previously on the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List, but were removed after 2025 retesting found traces of toxicants present.

In each case (for the three products noted below), the retests detected very low levels of toxicants — consistent with the idea that these products are still relatively cleaner choices compared to similar items in their categories. However — even though these products could still be classified as “cleaner” by nearly every standard — we only include products on the list above if the most recent lab results for that product show non-detect levels for all four metals we test for (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic), or “safe by all standards” for Arsenic levels below 10 ppb with no other metals detected. So while these three products tested positive for very low levels of toxicants with the most recent round of lab testing, they no longer meet our standards to remain on our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

You can read more about these products and see the most recent lab test results for each in the articles linked below:

  1. One Degree Organics Sprouted Rolled Oats, yellow bag (Made in Canada) — Link to May 2025 Retest
  2. Jovial Organic All-Purpose Einkorn Flour (Made in Italy)Link to August 2025 Retest
  3. DeathWish Ground Coffee, Espresso Roast Link to September 2025 Retest
