Testing Local Honey for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic

A Quick Note From Tamara Rubin

I will start by disclosing that I am part owner of my family’s honey farm in Northern California — so there is potential for bias in my statements related to this testing.

While we were waiting to raise the funds for testing and reporting on a mainstream honey product  (we had chosen to test and report on a honey product sold by Whole Foods – based on feedback from the Lead Safe Mama online community), I decided to go ahead and send a random honey sample to the lab for testing (from a local small family farm),

Since this is our first honey sample to be tested and we don’t know how it will compare to others, we are not going to share more details about the origin of this honey at this time. I expect that the test results for this particular honey sample is likely a representative test result set for honey that one might normally find at  small family farms in the United States*. Based on other product testing we have done to date,  my educated guess is that this particular honey likely will be shown to test similar to (or cleaner than) other honey products when we do have the opportunity to test more honey samples. Specifically this product is likely cleaner from a toxicant-contamination perspective than many other similar honey products, given the region where it was harvested and other considerations related to small family farms.

*Absent large scale contamination events around-or-near honey farming activities — for example the LA Fires — where countless Lead-painted structures burned in a concentrated area which likely impacted the contamination levels of honey in that area for an extended period.

The full original lab report for this honey sample is below, at the very bottom of this article.

This honey product tested positive for a very low level of Lead (just above the Action Level threshold for foods that may be consumed by children), and came back “non-detect” for Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic. Given we don’t have other honey lab reports for comparison yet, I think it is reasonable to look at the test results for this product compared to other sweeteners, and we will be publishing a comparative chart of sweetener test results shortly and will link that here once it has been published.

Note: a primary concern I have with Lead contamination in small family farm honey is the common practice of reusing boards to make bee boxes. In my 30+ years with family in the honey business we have seen Lead-contaminated bee boxes in many different scenarios. We always recommend that (for the health of the bees and the health of the humans consuming the honey), bee boxes should be made of virgin wood and painted with food-safe paint or sealants (if they are painted at all). Bee boxes with deteriorating paint should never be used – and honey farmers should consider testing their existing bee boxes with reliable lead paint test kits. This is the best option for testing for Lead in paint (this product does not work to test honey or other consumer goods for Lead).

Who paid for testing and reporting on this product?

Testing and reporting for this product was not funded — we will subsidize our costs for testing and reporting on this product with undesignated funds gifted via Patreon and GoFundMe.

If you appreciate these articles and would like to help Lead Safe Mama, LLC continue testing and publishing lab reports — like this one — please consider  supporting  our work by joining our Patreon channel with a small monthly donation if you have the means to do so. Any amount helps — our current average paid member contributes about $3.28 per month [three dollars and twenty eight cents], but you can also join us on Patreon for free. Lead Safe Mama Patreon members are among the first to access articles and lab reports as soon as they’re published, and that alone is a great reason to join.

All articles on Lead Safe Mama dot com are now ad-free!

As of February 27, 2026, 638 paid Patreon members contribute a combined $2,091 per month (an average gift of $3.28 each). Our short-term goal is reaching $3,300 in monthly Patreon gifts, equivalent to 1,100 members giving $3 each, so we can help offset some of the critical revenue we gave up by canceling our Mediavine advertising contract in February 2026. That decision (giving up our advertising contract) made all Lead Safe Mama articles easier for you to read, freeing the entire website from randomly served up in-article and pop-up ads! Please consider joining us with a gift of at least $3 a month, or whatever you can afford — we just need 403 more Patreon members to join us at this level to meet this goal. Thank you!

How does this testing and reporting work in general?

Products are nominated for testing by our online community. You can learn more about the nomination process at this link. Most nominated products are funded through dedicated GoFundMe campaigns, while some are covered by generous contributions from individual sponsors.

We also frequently test important and/or high-interest products before funding is secured, and we welcome contributions to help cover those costs, making it possible for us to continue this important work. Here is our budget for testing and reporting on a single product.

Our full list of published and pending lab reports is available here — this landing page is updated frequently, so bookmark it and check back periodically.

Our Lab Tested Safer Choices list — the result of Lead Safe Mama, LLC’s Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative, featuring products that either tested “non-detect” across the board or safe by all current and proposed standards — is available here. This list currently includes 113 products, with 10 to be added this week! The most recent version is also below — scroll down.

A “spacer graphic” like the one above can be found in each of our articles that include the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. The graphic differs depending on which version of the list is below it. The Teddy Bear with Heart graphic above is our newest spacer for the February 2026 update of this Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. If the graphic is different when you see this list in any article (a pumpkin, sun, leaf, rainbow, flower, turkey, Christmas ornament, or shamrock), that means it is an earlier version of the Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

While the date of the list, as it was last updated, is included in the text below it, we also wanted to introduce the visual tool that we use to identify the latest version of our lab-tested safer choices list. Lead Safe Mama team members strive to update the list with the current spacer graphic on all older articles, indicating that the most recent list of safer choices is below. However, they may not have had a chance to update every copy yet. Please be patient! Thank you.

Interested in seeing more safer choices?

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items including sunscreens and toothpaste) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic through independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC — an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention.

The following 113 product examples clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices, at least from the perspective of heavy metal contamination.

The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each metal are noted in the individual lab reports. To find the full original lab report for any product, type the brand or product name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com and scroll down to the bottom of the related article. The original lab report can always be found at the very bottom of each related article. Most published lab reports are also linked on our lab testing landing page, which is updated most weeks and worth bookmarking for the latest results.

Specific flavors or variations tested are noted in the list below and in each related article. Other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or did not yield similar results. Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below. Test results are product-specific, not brand-specific: Never assume all products from a brand are free of heavy metals contamination simply because one or more products came back with clean test results.

Products on our “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” list are retested periodically — annually when possible, or more frequently as funding permits. If a product no longer tests clean (non-detect for all, or safe-by-all standards) with a second round of lab analysis, it is removed from the list. If you have questions about any product removed from this list, please use the search bar at the top of the page to find more information, including its most recent test results. Products previously on this list that have since been removed are also noted at the very bottom (three products currently fall in that category).

Products Removed from the Above “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” List

The three products in the numbered list below were previously on the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List, but were removed after 2025 retesting found traces of toxicants present.

In each case (for the three products noted below), the retests detected very low levels of toxicants — consistent with the idea that these products are still relatively cleaner choices compared to similar items in their categories. However — even though these products could still be classified as “cleaner” by nearly every standard — we only include products on the list above if the most recent lab results for that product show non-detect levels for all four metals we test for (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic), or “safe by all standards” for Arsenic levels below 10 ppb with no other metals detected. So while these three products tested positive for very low levels of toxicants with the most recent round of lab testing, they no longer meet our standards to remain on our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

You can read more about these products and see the most recent lab test results for each in the articles linked below:

  1. Do you know if the foundation was wired? As a beekeeper, we went to a lot of trouble to avoid all the galvanized components in our hives. My concern was that the galvanized components would contaminate the honey with lead.

    1. I believe they do not use any metal in the bee boxes (is that what you are referring to?) They also sell whole honeycomb. It is raw / unfiltered honey.

I very much do expect that galvanized wire in the frames would be highly likely to result in fairly significant Lead contamination. There are definitely lots of other factors (other than a significant contamination event). If I were to guess, I would think honey from Farmers not paying attention to these things (contamination in the bees environment) might test positive for as much as 100 ppb, although I am not 100% sure of that.

And what about the smokers? What are people using to create the smoke in their smokers? That’s a definite possible contamination sources as well.

So the list we are working on:
      1. Unpainted Bee Boxes
      2. No galvanized metal components of Bee Boxes
      3. Avoid urban proximity when possible. I have not confirmed this but I do have a concern for urban honey contamination in major metropolitan areas.
      3. Avoid proximity of flowers near lead painted buildings (houses, farm buildings, out buildings).
      4. …. Consider whether or not smoking the bees out might be a source of contamination.

It will be so interesting to test more honey and see what the outcome of these suspected scenarios are!

  2. Have the honey tested for Amitraz and its metabolites (beekeeper applied pesticide).
Have it also tested for all of the various agricultural chemicals used that the bees will come in contact with during foraging

    1. That’s not what we do. We test for heavy metals. We are an organization for childhood Lead poisoning prevention and consumer goods safety.

I would like to encourage you to have your honey tested for those things.

This particular honey that we tested for this article is from an organic regenerative farm and nothing toxic or artificial has been applied or used in production. Bees have a wide range, and they are always going to pick up what is in their environment — that will be an interesting metric to begin to quantify.
