Lab Report for an Egg from Backyard Chickens in Central Florida — Testing For Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Arsenic, & Antimony

Published: February 18, 2026
Section #1) Some Background
Over the past two decades we have written quite a bit about the concern for heavy metals contamination of eggs from backyard chicken flocks. We were actually even interviewed by a journalist with The New York Times about this issue back in October of 2012! I also guest-authored a chapter in the book “Proven Techniques for Keeping Healthy Chickens” – here’s the link to that book! https://amzn.to/4kITqvP
While contamination of eggs from backyard chickens in URBAN environments is definitely a concern, and we have often cautioned against keeping your chickens near any old potentially lead-painted structures (on farms or in suburban or urban environments) as chickens like the sweet taste of Lead paint chips and tend to gravitate to eating those if they are present — we have also long-suspected that eggs are generally (outside of the above concerns) much less likely to be contaminated with toxicants (heavy metals) than other foods.
The Lead-contamination concerns you may still find in an urban, suburban or rural home chicken coop might include:
- lead-contaminated soil (always get your soil tested for heavy metals BEFORE you set up your chicken coop if at all possible!) – more on that here
- lead-contaminated water – more on that here
- lead-contaminated chicken wire (which can contaminate the soil as it deteriorates over time with weather) — more on that here
- and lead-contaminated dietary additives sold for use with chicken flocks — including calcium rich additives that may have clay, shells, calcium carbonate or other potentially contaminated sources of Calcium.
- We also discourage the use of clay powder or other potentially toxic powders as a feed additive (usually added to prevent mold and clumping of feed) — as those can be heavily lead contaminated (example of bentonite clay contamination here), and have been shown to poison farm animals (in multiple scientific studies)
Section #2) Why did we test this egg?
During a home consultation earlier this year (2026) in central Florida, we visited a family who was looking into the concern for Antimony exposure in their home. Specifically several members of this family had tested positive for high levels of Antimony (confirmed with several rounds of biological testing conducted by their healthcare providers). Continue reading below the image.
In examining their home and identifying potential sources of Antimony contamination, one of the unusual / unexpected things we found was a garden hose that tested positive for significant levels of Antimony (photo above). As this was the hose they used to water their chickens (and as the eggs from their chickens are a daily part of their diet), we felt it would be prudent to test their chicken eggs for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Arsenic AND also ANTIMONY (periodic table symbol: Sb) to determine if the Antimony-contaminated hose might be contributing a concerning amount of Antimony to their back yard chickens’ eggs.
While this might seem like a bit of a leap (could contamination from a hose really contaminate the eggs of the chickens drinking the water from that hose?), it is important to understand that it was a very long hose being used in a hot climate, and for this specific situation, there was a likelihood of the water sitting in the hose for an extended period of time before the hose was used to feed the chickens. Heat and time are both factors that can cause the toxicants commonly found in hoses (including Lead) to leach into the water that is left sitting in the hose between uses.
One recommendation we made to the family (in the meantime, while we were testing an egg sample from their flock by sending it to a lab for third party, independent testing) is that chickens should always be fed (watered) using a drinking-water-specific delivery hose (the kind you might buy for an RV or a boat, the kind that usually has a blue stripe down the side to indicate it is safe for use with drinking water (more on that here). If you have a backyard flock and don’t have time (or funds) to purchase a drinking water safe hose right away, it’s always a good idea to fully flush out the water that has been sitting in the hose between animal feedings (so your animals don’t drink any of the water that has been sitting in the hose, with the hose flushed right before each feeding ideally).
In the end this Central Florida backyard chicken egg tested clean with independent, third-party laboratory testing.
The lab report (full original lab report can be found at the bottom of this page) came back with “non-detect” results for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Arsenic AND Antimony — so this family can go ahead with eating their eggs knowing they are not a likely source of the Antimony exposure identified in their recent biological testing (the testing ordered by their doctor).
We did some additional testing for this family (on other potential sources of Antimony exposure that may be contributing factors in their specific situation) and will be reporting on each of those factors separately. We will then will write a summary article discussing the overall concern as it relates to the potential exposure sources we identified in this case. When those additional articles are live you will be able to find them on this link – with the “Antimony Exposure” keyword tag.
Section #3) Where does Antimony Exposure Come From Anyway?
Here’s a list of things to stop using – or doing (in general) if you personally have tested positive for Antimony and cannot identify the source (noting Antimony was added to the list of known human carcinogens in December of 2021), each of these types of common things that you may find in your home consistently tests positive for at least some amount of Antimony:
- Synthetic Fleece Clothing
- Synthetic Fleece Bedding
- Bedding or Clothing with Flame Retardants (a primary ingredient in modern chemical flame retardants is Antimony)
- Couches made of synthetic materials / Couches with Flame Retardants / Couches stuffed with Polyfil
- Bedding (quilts, pillows, etc.) with Poylfil (opt for pillows with natural fabrics and natural fillers instead – here’s a good choice, here’s another. )
- Plastic water bottles (single use)
- Food in plastic packaging (like Peanut Butter, more on that here)
- Synthetic carpets (area rugs, installed carpets, washable rugs – like “Ruggable” products)
- Toys and dolls stuffed with synthetic fibers (usually Polyfil)
- Crystal Drinkware specifically marketed and sold as “Lead-Free Crystal” (they have replaced the Lead with Antimony in most cases) — instead buy Lead Free Glass products – not marketed and sold as crystal (ideas for safer choices here, and here).
- Regular interaction with Electrical Cables for Products that have a fire risk (Antimony is the fire retardant on modern electrical cables).
-
- This DOES NOT include charging cables for phones and computers (they are generally Antimony-free as they are not considered to be a fire risk and are therefore not treated with flame retardants).
- If you have to touch Antimony-contaminated cables on a regular basis, wash your hands with hot water, soap and a cloth washcloth after interacting with these cables (especially before eating).
- This includes: electrical wire, electrical wire tape, extension cords, construction equipment, and most kitchen countertop appliances. More on electrical tape here.
- For kitchen appliances (toasters, toaster ovens, blenders, stand-mixers, etc.) I recommend putting a bit of blue painters tape around the part of the cable of kitchen appliance nearest the plug, so you can easily plug-in or unplug those appliances without having to touch the actual cable while you are cooking.
- Alternately you can leave those appliances plugged in (if it is safe to do so), making sure the cable stays tucked in behind the appliance so you do not have to interact with it while you are cooking /handling food.
-
- Modern synthetic electrified Christmas Trees (or other similar plug in Christmas or holiday decor).
- Enamel Bathtubs made after 1970 – manufacturers may have replaced the Lead-based enamel with Antimony-based enamel (common at least into the early 1990s).
- As a result taking long and frequent “detox” baths in these types of tubs (especially with abrasive substances included in the bath — like epsom salts or clays added to the tub) can cause significant levels of Antimony exposure (modern molded plastic / fiberglass tubs are generally free of Antimony and Lead)
Here’s a direct link to the 2021 Antimony Notification as the original article with one of the original press releases on the US Federal Government Website has been taken down (!) Here’s a link where the summary is still live however. Here’s another link to a press release (re: the 15th Report on Carcinogens — Published December 23, 2021).
Section #4) Ways to avoid Antimony exposure
Rules of thumb to limit Antimony exposure:
- If it touches any part of your naked body on a regular basis — without any other barrier — make sure it is a natural fiber (for clothes, bedding, sofas, carpets, anything where you might interact with a material naked!)
- Simple Solution: If you have a synthetic couch, get a nice organic cotton blanket to throw over it — and always have that barrier between the people who use the couch and the couch.
- Make sure to get natural fiber bed pillows and pillow covers as your face spends a lot of time on your pillow!
- Don’t let young children sleep with (or regularly snuggle with) conventional stuffed animals made of synthetic fibers and polyfil, instead choose options made with organic natural fabrics and stuffings. Under The Nile is a good brand to look at. Here’s a link.
- My youngest kiddo — Charlie — keeps their stuffed animal collection on a shelf and does not sleep with them.
- If you have to wear clothes for work that are treated with flame retardant (as welders, fire fighters, and certain lab technicians may be required to do) — if at all possible (and if it would not be a violation of your industry’s protective standards to do so) make sure you have a natural fiber barrier between your body and your flame retardant uniform.
- Also: if you are going to buy packaged food at all, buy food in glass packages whenever possible.
- Don’t put nearly naked babies in car seats on hot days (make sure they are wearing clothes / have a barrier between their skin and the car seat).
- Don’t take long, extended, frequent, hot “detox baths” in enamel tubs (from any era).
- Fiberglass or molded plastic tubs are safer options (and natural wood tubs are an amazing option if you can afford one!)
- We are also (at this time ) recommending avoiding the use of plug in/ electric essential oil diffusers (if you have tested positive for Antimony) — until further notice (until additional study can be done).
Section #5) “Can you test my backyard chicken egg?”
We are very interested in testing a few more backyard chicken eggs from around the United States, to see what the possible range of contamination might be (and if there are regional implications). If you are interested in sponsoring the cost of testing and reporting for an egg from your backyard flock, please be in touch with Serina at Serina@LeadSafeMama.com and we will get back to you as soon as we are ready to take on this project. Thank you (Note: it may take a while for us to get back to you about this, please be patient).

A “spacer graphic” like the one above can be found in each of our articles that include the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. The graphic differs depending on which version of the list is below it. The Teddy Bear with Heart graphic above is our newest spacer for the February 2026 update of this Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. If the graphic is different when you see this list in any article (a pumpkin, sun, leaf, rainbow, flower, turkey, Christmas ornament, or shamrock), that means it is an earlier version of the Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.
While the date of the list, as it was last updated, is included in the text below it, we also wanted to introduce the visual tool that we use to identify the latest version of our lab-tested safer choices list. Lead Safe Mama team members strive to update the list with the current spacer graphic on all older articles, indicating that the most recent list of safer choices is below. However, they may not have had a chance to update every copy yet. Please be patient! Thank you.
Are you interested in seeing MORE safer choices?
Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) for which the lab reports showed “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention).
- These 103 product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of concerns for heavy metals contamination).
- The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for each specific product. To see the full, original lab report for any of these products, type the brand or product name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com and scroll down to the bottom of the related article. The original lab report can always be found at the very bottom of each related article. Most of our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
- This landing page is updated weekly (most weeks) and is a good page to bookmark and check back on periodically if you want the latest test results.
- Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted in the list below (and on all of our related articles). Other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results.
- Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.
- Test results are PRODUCT SPECIFIC, not BRAND SPECIFIC.
- One should never assume that all products from a specific brand are clean just because one or more products from that specific brand came back with clean test results.
Products on our “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” list are retested periodically (annually if possible, or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean (non-detect for all, or safe-by-all standards) with a second round of lab analysis, it is removed from the list. If you have questions about a product that was removed from this list, please use the search bar at the top of the page to see more on that product, including its most recent test results. Products previously on this list that have since been removed are also noted at the very bottom (three products currently fall in that category).

Products Removed from the Above “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” List
The three products in the numbered list below were previously on the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List, but were removed after 2025 retesting found traces of toxicants present.
In each case (for the three products noted below), the retests detected very low levels of toxicants — consistent with the idea that these products are still relatively cleaner choices compared to similar items in their categories. However — even though these products could still be classified as “cleaner” by nearly every standard — we only include products on the list above if the most recent lab results for that product show non-detect levels for all four metals we test for (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic), or “safe by all standards” for Arsenic levels below 10 ppb with no other metals detected. So while these three products tested positive for very low levels of toxicants with the most recent round of lab testing, they no longer meet our standards to remain on our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.
You can read more about these products and see the most recent lab test results for each in the articles linked below:
