A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

Well. If the lab report (below) for this Wild Planet Albacore Wild Tuna product does not convince you to stop eating Tuna, I’m not sure anything will! The full original lab report for this product is at the very bottom of this page below the shareable social media graphic.

I will confess — even though I knew theoretically that tuna contains unsafe levels of Mercury — I have consumed Tuna maybe two or three times a year over the past 10 years or so after I stopped having babies and breastfeeding, thinking “well… I’m not impacting any babies with this” (I’m just making a choice to contaminate my own body… no big deal).

It truly is eye opening to see the actual lab test results for a product that I made this kind of excuse for (allowing myself to continue eating it every now and then, even though — intellectually — I knew better). I think we all make decisions that fall in this category (thinking we cannot go without something, or that we “deserve a treat”). I really cannot unsee these test results though, and now that I know I will never eat tuna again. I expect other tuna products will test similarly, or worse. There is no reason to believe the results of this lab testing are unique or batch-specific.

I don’t want to die riddled with disease. I want to die of old age, with all of my intellectual faculties in place (to the degree that might be possible)!

As with the chocolate conversation, consuming tuna (and now sardines, too) is just not worth the risk for me. No wonder I tested positive for Mercury when I had my urine tested shortly after eating fish! (Here’s that link if are curious to see my personal heavy metals test results from a few years ago.) I am very curious to redo my own testing (years later) after eliminating so many of these toxic products from my diet over the past several years!

The full original lab report for this product is at the very bottom of this article, below the shareable social media graphics and our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. Please do scroll down to check it out!

Who paid for testing and reporting on this product?

Testing and reporting for this product was not covered by any fundraising campaign or single donor. We chose to test this product without first raising funding to do so as it is a very popular key product used by countless families and we felt it was important to know these results as a basis of comparison for other similar products nominated by the Lead Safe Mama Community.

If you would like to make a contribution supporting the funding for testing and reporting on this particular product, there are several ways to do so below, however the best thing you can do is join us as a member on Patreon for a small monthly contribution toward the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing initiative. Here’s the link to our Patreon membership page.

  • For most of the products we test and report on, Lead Safe Mama community members contribute to a GoFundMe campaign that raises the necessary funds for testing and reporting each nominated product.
  • Testing and reporting for some products is covered by generous contributions from single individual sponsors.
  • We also frequently test and report on important popular products (like this one) without first raising the funds to cover our costs, and we can always use your help to cover expenses and help us continue this important work.
  • You can see our full list of published and pending lab reports at this link
  • You can find all of our open GoFundMe Campaigns for product testing here

How YOU can support the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community-Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative:

To view our other testing campaigns that have yet to fund (and consider contributing to any specific product if you are in a position to do so), please click here.

To join us on Patreon with a small monthly gift (paid memberships start at just $1.18 a month) in support of the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community-Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative, both directly aiding this work and being among the first to see new lab reports as we publish them, click here. You can join us on Patreon for FREE or with a small monthly gift (of whatever you can afford).

All of our Patreon membership levels (paid and unpaid) receive the same benefits (like early notice for our test results before we publish them on our social media) as our work is NEVER behind a paywall of any kind.

To date, the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community-Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative has identified 99 “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” across all product types we have tested (most of which are products that came back from the lab with “non-detect” results for all four heavy metals we test for — Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic — with the limits of detection noted on each lab report). You can find the full list of lab-tested safer choices below (please scroll down).

This is an ad-free article.

We have removed ads from most of our more widely-read articles and new articles (like this one!) to make them easier for you to read.

A “spacer graphic” like the one above can be found in each of our articles that include the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. The graphic differs depending on which version of the list is below it. The Pumpkin graphic above is our newest spacer for the October 2025 update of this Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. If the graphic is different when you see this list in any article (a sun, leaf, rainbow, flower, heart, Christmas ornament, or shamrock), that means it is an earlier version of the Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

While the date of the list’s  last update is included in the text below it, we also wanted to introduce the visual tool we use to identify the latest version of our lab-tested safer choices list. Lead Safe Mama team members strive to update the list with the current spacer graphic on all older articles, indicating that the most recent list of safer choices is below. However, they may not have had a chance to update every copy yet. Please be patient! Thank you.

Are you interested in seeing MORE safer choices?

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention).

  • The product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of concerns for heavy metals contamination).
  • The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for each specific product. To see the full, original lab report for any of these products, type the brand or product name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com and scroll down to the bottom of the related article. The original lab report can always be found at the very bottom of each related article. Most of our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
    • This landing page is updated weekly (most weeks), and is a good page to bookmark and check back on periodically if you want the latest test results.
  • Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted in the list below (and on all of our related articles). Other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results.
    • Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.
    • Test results are PRODUCT SPECIFIC, not BRAND SPECIFIC.
      • One should never assume that all products from a specific brand are clean just because one or more products from that specific brand came back with clean test results.

Products on our “safer choices” list are retested periodically (annually or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean (non-detect for all, or safe-by-all standards) with a second round of lab analysis, it is removed from the list. If you have questions about a product that was removed from this list, please use the search bar at the top of the page to see more on that product, including its most recent test results. Products previously on this list that have since been removed are also noted at the very bottom.

Products Removed from the Above “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” List

The following three products were previously on the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List, but were removed after 2025 retesting found toxicants present.

In each case (for the three products noted below), the retests detected very low levels of toxicants — consistent with the idea that these products are still relatively cleaner choices compared to similar items in their categories. However — even though these products could still be classified as “cleaner” — we only include products on the list above if the most recent lab results for that product show non-detect levels for all four metals we test for (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic). So while these three products tested positive for very low levels of toxicants with the most recent round of lab testing, they no longer meet our standards for remaining on our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.

You can read more about these products and see the most recent lab test results for each in the articles linked below (new lab reports will be published shortly):

  1. One Degree Organics Sprouted Rolled Oats, yellow bag (Made in Canada) — May 2025 Retest
  2. Jovial Organic All-Purpose Einkorn Flour (Made in Italy) — 2025 Retest Lab Report to be Published Shortly

  1. Thank you!!! “Safe Catch” tuna publicizes their levels; and “EVERY SINGLE FISH is tested”. Their “Elite” tuna is tested to be MAX 100 PPB mercury, but “avg. closer to 40 PPB”. Not good I know, but less than half (or More) of “Wild Planet”…
—-“Lowest mercury of any brand, guaranteed” -— “The official tuna of the American Pregnancy Association”. —-“Safe Catch is the ONLY brand mercury testing Every Tuna, Every Time.“ —-LINK:
https://safecatch.com/faq/ “How much mercury is in your products?” —- I’ll go ahead and Nominate their Elite Tuna for your testing, I hope we can get 9 more people to second it. Thank you SO much Tamara !!! —-***PS.*** This article (wild planet tuna) displays awfully wonky starting right below the Purity Lab Test Report graphic (“Lab report for the product pictured”), with SUUUUPER long single vertical lines of text following … never had that issue with your articles before , and I just tested other articles which still display fine, so thought I should mention it in case it can be fixed on your end. 🙂

  2. Thanks for the very helpful article! Quite informative, and relevant to many people.

On a slightly related note (i.e., ready-to-eat fish products designed for convenience), I’m wondering how free of toxicants the following food product might be. It’s called “Safe Catch Wild Pacific Pink Salmon”, and is sold in small pouches that are not very expensive. It has good reviews on the Internet, overall. A simplified version of what they claim about it is: “The only brand to test every salmon for mercury, and has the lowest mercury limit of any brand.”

Safe Catch sells multiple fish products, with similar (but different) low mercury claims. Packed (processed) in Thailand. However is fished from a different part of the ocean (Pacific).

    1. See my comment above 🙂 Maybe you can help officially send an email to nominate their “elite tuna”!! If we get 10 people we can get the testing funded . Let’s see if they live up to their claims and their relatively excellent reported testing limits.

    1. Plesee join me in nominating “Safe Catch Elite Wild Tuna” so we can start raising funds to test it… 10 people need to nominate.

  3. Hi, Both skipjack & yellowtail are supposed to be lower in mercury–we DO use Wild Planet and Genova so it would be good to know if those two smaller fish are just or near as bad. Thank you!

  4. First of all, I want to thank Tamara and everyone else in this group for all the work you’re doing it’s much appreciated!
I have a quick question. I may have missed it, but is the arsenic in this tuna measured as organic or inorganic? I read that fish generally contain mostly organic arsenic, which accounts for about 97% to 99% of the total arsenic, and that the body typically doesn’t absorb it and easily excrete. In contrast, inorganic arsenic is the very toxic form.
For example, if someone were to eat 200g of this particular tuna daily, the arsenic content would be:
    2,678 ppb or ÎĽg/kg Ă— 0.2 kg = 535 ÎĽg/day total arsenic.
    To calculate the inorganic arsenic:
    535 ÎĽg Ă— (1/100) = 5.35 ÎĽg/day,
    or if it’s closer to 3%, 535 ÎĽg Ă— (3/100) = 16.05 ÎĽg/day,
The safe level for arsenic in the table above shows 10ppb which equates to 10ÎĽg
So the value of inorganic arsenic is still worrying but maybe much less concerning.
Please feel free to correct me if I’m mistaken.
    Thank you!

  5. I dont know I d toss out all tuna from the diet just yet. . Albacore, in general, is notably much higher in mercury than light tuna.

  6. I’d be curious to see how the skipjack tuna from the same brand compares. Supposedly skipjack is better for heavy metals.

I’m also curious about smaller fish. People always say that sardines are better than tuna because they accumulate less heavy metals being lower down the food chain…
