Testing Davids Hydroxi (EWG Verified) Toothpaste in Natural Orange Vanilla Flavor for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic with Independent, Third-Party Laboratory Analysis

A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:

We tested the “Natural Peppermint” flavor of this EWG Verified Davids Toothpaste product several months ago (February 2025, Lab Report Here), however the lab we were using at the time had a very high low-threshold of detection for some metals.

What that means is that while the testing of the first flavor (Natural Peppermint) revealed that one or more ingredients used by this brand are definitely contaminated with a combination of Lead and Arsenic, we couldn’t be certain about whether or not Cadmium and Mercury were toxicant concerns for this brand without additional testing.

All we could tell from the first test we did was that the levels of these two toxicants [Cadmium & Mercury] were “less than 25 parts per billion”, but beyond that we could not know if they were not present or if they might be present at lower levels than that threshold (up to 24 ppb)- levels of Mercury and Cadmium which are (arguably) still concerning in toothpaste even though they are very low.

Question: How much Mercury do YOU want in your toothpaste? Is that a compromise you are willing to make?

  • Davids Toothpaste is an EWG Verified Toothpaste Product (at least several of the products in the Davids brand seem to be on the EWG Verified list).
  • Lead Safe Mama, LLC is actively trying to find an organization that may be interested in suing EWG on behalf of  the public for EWG’s egregious and persistent actions giving heavily toxicant contaminated products (like this one – Davids Toothpaste) their top (bought and paid for) “EWG Verified” rating.
  • EWG has continued to give contaminated products high ratings (including their EWG Verified badge) in spite of EWG’s direct knowledge of these contamination concerns, which have repeatedly been brought to their attention by Lead Safe Mama, LLC. over the past couple of years:
    • We have written articles about the issue (which we have then shared with EWG and people in the EWG community).
    • We have exchanged emails, had phone calls with and even had zoom meetings with people on EWG’s staff, their board of directors and with funding agency representatives (that grant funds to EWG) about these issues.
  • Yet – in spite of the above communications, (which we have fairly well documented) no actions have been taken by EWG to fix this issue (to remove these certifications and top ratings from known contaminated products). You can see a partial list of those products on this link.
  • Given all of the above considerations, we felt it would be prudent to re-test a product from this brand at the new lab we are using, a lab which has a more specific (lower) low threshold of detection in the testing they do for us (compared to the previous lab we were using).
    • We wanted to see if – in fact – Davids Toothpaste did also test positive for Mercury and Cadmium, which is the case with many other toothpastes with similar ingredient profiles.
    • Somehow an EWG Verified toothpaste that tests positive for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic seemed like it might (finally) generate a reasonable response from EWG – so we really wanted to find out about those two metals for which the previous testing did not have a low enough threshold of detection for this product.

You can see our comparative chart of toothpaste test results on this link.

Not all of our toothpaste lab reports are listed in the chart yet (we will be updating it soon), but out of the 51 products that are listed, Davids tested positive for a higher level of Lead than 44 of the other products we had tested and reported on at the time of publishing that chart.

The new lab we are using tested the Natural Orange Vanilla version of this product.

We anticipated that it might have similar test results to the Natural Peppermint Flavor toothpaste from this brand that we tested earlier this year. NOTE: We do expect ALL flavors from this brand to likely test similarly. If Davids has a natural cinnamon or natural chocolate flavor toothpaste (which some brands do), there’s a chance that the products with those flavors could have higher toxicant levels — but otherwise the ingredient profile for most of Davids toothpaste products seem to be the same or similar (with only minor flavor variations) and we don’t expect any other flavors from this brand to test significantly differently than the two we have already tested (within the range presented by these two examples).

VERY IMPORTANT TO REITERATE WHAT WE HAVE SAID IN EARLIER ARTICLES: While the levels of heavy metal toxicants found in the toothpaste products from this brand (the examples that we have tested to date) is concerning and likely dangerous from a long-terhealth perspective – especially given all federal agencies agree with the scientific and medical communities consensus that there is no safe level of Lead exposure for human beings, the levels of toxicants found are considered to be completely legal by all currently relevant legally enforceable standards (which are minimal, at best).

This is a problem.

  • It is a problem that the FDA allows up to 10,000 ppb (10 ppm) Lead in non-fluoride toothpastes.
  • It is a problem that the FDA does not have any clear set regulatory limits for Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic levels in toothpaste.
  • We need to fix this.
  • We should NOT have to be concerned about the potential cumulative impacts over a lifetime of being exposed to “just a little bit of poisons” – orally – ever single day of our life, twice or more each day when we brush our teeth.
  • This seems like a pretty straightforward problem that needs to be addressed by industry.
  • Calcium Carbonate is generally likely contaminated with Lead and other toxicants.
  • Hydroxyapatite is also consistently contaminated (based on the testing we have done to date)
  • Hydrated Silica appears to be a potentially heavy-metals contaminated ingredient too (based on testing we have done to date of more than 70 toothpaste and tooth powder products now).
  • Toothpaste manufacturers should be required (by our federal regulatory agencies) to stop using these contaminated or potentially contaminated ingredients until uncontaminated alternatives can be found.
  • This is not rocket science!
    • We have found a total of EIGHT toothpaste products to date that have come back from the lab with “non-detect” (effectively negative) results for Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, and Mercury.
    • This includes both fluoride and fluoride free options.
    • With these eight examples, the industry has demonstrated that it is possible to make cleaner (not heavy-metals contaminated) toothpaste options and we – as consumers – need to demand this.
  • You can see all of the safer choices we have identified to date in our lab-tested safer choices list – scroll down for that.

Who paid for the testing and reporting on this product?

Testing and reporting for this product was NOT funded, but given we felt we needed to re-test this brand (to get more accurate test results from a lab that uses a lower threshold of detection for all metals) – we sent it in for testing anyway. We could really use your support to help cover our costs to test and report on this product – and there are links to do that below.

Normally Lead Safe Mama community members contribute to a GoFundMe campaign to raise the funds to cover the costs for testing and reporting for the products we test.  Most of the lab testing we’ve done through the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative (see our full list of published reports here) has been funded either by individual supporters or through product-specific GoFundMe campaigns (which you can find here).

To date, through the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Community-Collaborative Laboratory Testing Initiative, we have identified 96 “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” across all product types we have tested (most of which are products that came back from the lab with “non-detect” results for all four heavy metals we test for — Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic — with the limits of detection noted on the lab report for each product). You can find the full list of lab-tested safer choices below (please scroll down).

A “spacer graphic” like the one above can be found in each of our articles that include the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. The graphic differs depending on which version of the list is below it. The Leaf graphic above is our newest spacer for the September 2025 update of this Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. If the graphic is different when you see this list in any article (a sun, rainbow, flower, heart, or shamrock), that means it is an earlier version of the Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. While the date of the list (and its last update) is included in the text below it, we also wanted to introduce the visual tool we use to identify the latest version of our lab-tested safer choices list. Lead Safe Mama team members strive to update the list with the current spacer graphic, indicating that the most recent list of safer choices is below. However, they may not have had a chance to update every copy yet. Please be patient! Thank you.

Are you interested in seeing MORE safer choices?

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention).

  • The product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of concerns for heavy metals contamination).
  • The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for each specific product. To see the full, original lab report (and read the related article) for any of these products, type the brand or product name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com and scroll down to the bottom of the related article. The original lab report can always be found at the very bottom of each related article. Most of our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
    • This landing page is updated weekly (most weeks) and is a good page to bookmark and check back on periodically if you want the latest test results.
  • Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted in the list below (and on all of our related articles). Other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results.
    • Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.
    • Test results are PRODUCT SPECIFIC, not BRAND SPECIFIC.
      • One should never assume that all products from a specific brand are clean just because one or more products from that specific brand came back with clean test results.

Products on our “safer choices” list are retested periodically (annually or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean (non-detect for all, or safe-by-all standards) with a second round of lab analysis, it is removed from the list. If you have questions about a product that was removed from this list, please use the search bar at the top of the page to see more on that product, including its most recent test results. Products that were previously on the list and have been removed are also noted at the bottom of this list.

Products Removed from the Above “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” List

The following two products were previously on the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List, but were removed after 2025 retesting found toxicants present.

In both cases (for the two products noted below), the retests detected very low levels of toxicants — consistent with the idea that these products are still relatively cleaner choices compared to similar items in their categories. However — even though these products could still be classified in the “cleaner products” category — we only include products on the list above if lab results show non-detect levels for all four metals we test for (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic) with the most recent lab report for that product. So while these two products tested positive very low levels of toxicants with the most recent round of lab testing for that product, they no longer meet our standards for remaining on our Lab Tested Safer Choices List.

You can read more about these products and the most recent lab test results for each in the articles linked below (the new lab reports will be published shortly if they have not yet been published):

  1. One Degree Organics Sprouted Rolled Oats, yellow bag (Made in Canada) — May 2025 Retest
  2. Jovial Organic All-Purpose Einkorn Flour (Made in Italy) August 2025 Retest Lab Report to be Published Shortly
