365 Whole Foods Market Organic Cocoa Powder Tests Positive for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, & Arsenic with Third-Party, Independent, Laboratory Testing
Published June 13, 2025 — Friday
A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:
Although the toxicant levels found in this product are 100% legal (by nearly all currently available standards, especially any standards/ limits in the United States), it tested positive for unsafe levels of Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic and should not be consumed, especially by children.
“Legal” is not the same as “safe” or “healthful.” All relevant federal agencies agree there is no safe level of Lead exposure for human beings — especially children. Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic are all classified as carcinogens. Separately, I simply don’t understand how anyone can justify using (or eating) a product that tests positive for any amount of Mercury at this point in history, with all we know about the health impacts of Mercury (knowledge that has been available for more than a century, actually).
The only reason to be eating chocolate products today in 2025 (absent independent, third-party testing confirming that a specific product does not test positive for toxicants) is because you have chosen to flirt with the consequences: Increased risks for cancer, cognitive decline, heart disease, kidney failure, arthritis, infertility/ reproductive disorders, birth complications, compromised immune system concerns, and a host of other health impairments that have been linked to heavy metals exposure through multiple scientific studies over the past century (more on these symptoms here, and here).
A century or more ago (before the industrial revolution), it may have been possible to produce healthful and uncontaminated cocoa products, however independent testing (from Lead Safe Mama, LLC as well as multiple other agencies and organizations) has repeatedly demonstrated this as simply no longer the case. All milk chocolate and dark chocolate products are contaminated with heavy metals at concerning levels. We discuss this in my documentary film, which you can watch here.
If you have “unexplained” health issues and are still consuming chocolate, this might be your sign to stop.

Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention). The product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of a concern for heavy metals contamination).

The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for the specific product listed. To see the full original lab report for any of these products, type the brand name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com (and scroll down to the bottom of the related article). All our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
–
Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted, and other flavors of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results. Test results only apply to the specific products linked below.
Products on our “safer choices” list are retested periodically (annually or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean, it is removed from the list.

I just threw out my unopened container of 365 organic cocoa. What do I do now? Do you think you’ll ever do a more in-depth review of cocoa powders? Would the cost of doing a few brands of organic cocoa be too prohibitive for one person to fund it?
Thank you Dianne – even this one was not funded (unexpectedly, because so many people nominated it for testing):

Tamara
That is alarming⚠️.
Maybe ALL chocolates have metals?
Thank you for your authentic work.
Thank you. Yes, they do. There is currently NO uncontaminated chocolate products that I am aware of (dark chocolate or milk chocolate). There is one white chocolate product in our safer choices list – which can be found towards the bottom of this article.
Tamara
I really like Pacha Mana ceremonial cacao. They have their products tested and list their levels on their blog. .010 PPM lead, .126PPM Cadmium. They have an interesting article on their blog discussing metals in chocolate.
Hmmm – interesting.
Not about chocolate… but about baby food… I see that the state of Virginia recently passed a law banning toxins in baby food. Wonder how this will be regulated? https://wjla.com/features/i-team/virginia-law-baby-food-testing-harmful-contaminants-pesticides-governor-glenn-youngkin-legislation-lead-poison-hb-1844-baby-food-protection-act-labels-safety-parents-bill
