Results from Blueprint Cocoa Powder (by Bryan Johnson) for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, & Arsenic Using Independent (Community-Funded), Third-Party Laboratory Testing

Published April 8, 2025 — Tuesday
A Quick Note from Tamara Rubin:
As anticipated, this Bryan Johnson Blueprint Unsweetened Cocoa Powder (pictured above) was positive for concerning levels of Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic after the independent, crowd-funded and community-collaborative, third-party laboratory testing Lead Safe Mama, LLC is coordinating. All cocoa powder products (and dark or milk chocolate products) we have tested with this initiative to date have tested positive for toxicants. Said another way, we have not yet found a toxicant-free cocoa powder.
If you have been consuming this product for the alleged health “benefits,” we recommend getting tested for Lead and other toxicants (with a blood test or urine test), especially if you have been consuming this daily. Daily consumption of contaminated products like this can lead to chronic health conditions. Cadmium is a known carcinogen. Anyone with a history of cancer in their family should seriously reconsider consuming ANY products that test positive for any amount of Cadmium. Separately, all relevant federal agencies agree there is no safe level of Lead exposure for human beings.

As far as safer choices for foods, supplements, and cosmetics go, we have a few lists on our food and supplement testing landing page (here) that you may find helpful in making safer choices for your family. We even have one dedicated to safer snack choices, here. You may also find this link helpful as it takes you to our most recently updated safer choices list of lab-tested foods, cosmetics, and supplements!
Here’s the link to our landing page with ALL of the lab reports for the independent, third-party laboratory testing Lead Safe Mama, LLC has coordinated since March of 2024 — this is also a good page to bookmark and check back on periodically (it is always pinned at the top of the website’s Menu via the button graphic below, and the Menu can be found at the top of every page on this site).

A “spacer graphic” like the one above can be found in each of our articles that include the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. The graphic differs depending on which version of the list is below it. The Pumpkin graphic above is our newest spacer for the October 2025 update of this Lab-Tested Safer Choices List. If the graphic is different when you see this list in any article (a sun, leaf, rainbow, flower, heart, Christmas ornament, or shamrock), that means it is an earlier version of the Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.
While the date of the list (the date of the last update) is included in the text below it, we also wanted to introduce the visual tool that we use to identify the latest version of our lab-tested safer choices list. Lead Safe Mama team members strive to update the list with the current spacer graphic on all older articles, indicating that the most recent list of safer choices is below. However, they may not have had a chance to update every copy yet. Please be patient! Thank you.
Are you interested in seeing MORE safer choices?
Below is an expanding list of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, and personal care items, including sunscreens and toothpaste) that tested “non-detect” for Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, and Arsenic with independent, third-party, community-funded laboratory testing coordinated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC (an Oregon-based small business with a unique community-collaborative business model and a focus on consumer goods safety and childhood Lead poisoning prevention).
- The product examples below clearly demonstrate that companies can manufacture safer choices (at least from the perspective of concerns for heavy metals contamination).
- The limits of detection (low-threshold of detection) for each of the metals tested are noted in the lab report for each specific product. To see the full, original lab report for any of these products, type the brand or product name into the search bar at the top of any page on Lead Safe Mama dot com and scroll down to the bottom of the related article. The original lab report can always be found at the very bottom of each related article. Most of our published lab reports are also linked here, on our lab testing landing page.
- This landing page is updated weekly (most weeks), and is a good page to bookmark and check back on periodically if you want the latest test results.
- Flavors (or specific variations) tested are noted in the list below (and on all of our related articles). Other variations of the same product (or other products from the same brand) have either not been tested or have been tested but did not yield similar results.
- Test results only apply to the specific products listed and linked below.
- Test results are PRODUCT SPECIFIC, not BRAND SPECIFIC.
- One should never assume that all products from a specific brand are clean just because one or more products from that specific brand came back with clean test results.
Products on our “safer choices” list are retested periodically (annually or more frequently, as funding permits). If a product no longer tests clean (non-detect for all, or safe-by-all standards) with a second round of lab analysis, it is removed from the list. If you have questions about a product that was removed from this list, please use the search bar at the top of the page to see more on that product, including its most recent test results. Products previously on this list that have since been removed are also noted at the very bottom.

Products Removed from the Above “Lab-Tested Safer Choices” List
The following three products were previously on the Lead Safe Mama, LLC Lab-Tested Safer Choices List, but were removed after 2025 retesting found toxicants present.
In each case (for the three products noted below), the retests detected very low levels of toxicants — consistent with the idea that these products are still relatively cleaner choices compared to similar items in their categories. However — even though these products could still be classified as “cleaner” — we only include products on the list above if the most recent lab results for that product show non-detect levels for all four metals we test for (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic). So while these three products tested positive for very low levels of toxicants with the most recent round of lab testing, they no longer meet our standards for remaining on our Lab-Tested Safer Choices List.
You can read more about these products and see the most recent lab test results for each in the articles linked below (new lab reports will be published shortly):
- One Degree Organics Sprouted Rolled Oats, yellow bag (Made in Canada) — May 2025 Retest
- Jovial Organic All-Purpose Einkorn Flour (Made in Italy) — 2025 Retest Lab Report to be Published Shortly
- DeathWish Ground Coffee, Espresso Roast — 2025 Retest Lab Report to be Published Shortly

I contacted Bryan Johnson Blueprint about the levels of Lead and they claim it is 100% pure and rigorously tested by independent third party labs. Have they contacted you about the article and testing.
He called me personally about a week ago.
How did that conversation with Bryan Johnson go? We’re curious to see how he would explain this.
100% pure doesn’t mean anything. They test it and they are aware it tests positive.
Thank you for replying back.
This is what Blueprint sent me for the Cocoa test results. Based on your test results I have scheduled a lab to get tested for lead.
Blueprint Test
Cadmium 0.691 ppm.
Lead 0.049 ppm
Arsenic 0.024 ppm
Thank you for testing it and making the results public. I am one of the people who have been taking it daily, since it came on the market. Knowing this new information, I’m definitely going to pause on taking it.
In his call to you, did he say he was going to do anything about it? He likes to be open about the shortcomings of other food products, but this time it’s much closer to home.
Wow. Thanks Tamara.
It looks like we can only trust open sourced third party test results these days.
Manufacturers intentionally (or sometimes unintentionally?) misrepresent / misinterpret their results so they can downplay the presence of heavy metals in their products. They either use the wrong measurements for evaluating human health (for example they use ppm, or serving size based metrics instead of ppb), or they downplay the results and don’t offer comparative analysis – comparing the toxicant profiles of their products to the toxicant profiles of other similar products (in the same product class) – instead bringing up the overused (under-proven / false / or misinterpreted) tropes of “well even peaches and pears have some lead” — or “well you eat spinach and that also has lead”. It’s definitely a frustrating paradigm of “scientific interpretation” – this is why we believe in sharing the raw data with the consumer, using appropriate, health protective measurement standards.
And to reiterate something I have said very often – we recommend avoiding spinach and potatoes, especially those products grown in the United States.
Thanks for commenting.

What is the specific product?
T
Given these levels I’m going to stop my current cocoa and yoghurt obsession. I would like to point out that the proposed action level for kids is 5ppb in baby food and although the powder may measure 439 for cadmium for instance if this was mixed into something at a normal ratio like yoghurt at a 1:20 ratio the amount of cadmium would drop to 22 ppb, still too high but not the 8,776% over as displayed above (nobody sane eats pure cocoa).
But not all dilution is a 1 to 20 ratio. And when something is a known Carcinogen (causes cancer) it should be avoided entirely – not consumed as part of a food that has purported health benefits. Many people are eating large quantities of cocoa and dark chocolate – undiluted (or at higher ratios than you have noted) for the “health benefits”.

Yeah been reading that cadmium has a 10 to 15 half life in the kidneys so it essentially accumulates meaning no amount is a safe amount.
Right – exactly – and it causes cancer. So…. My family has been avoiding chocolate and cocoa products – although I might eat a high fat (usually non-vegan) cocoa product as a RARE treat (the fat “dilutes” the Cadmium reading generally)… so Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie Ice Cream (a small amount) is LIKELY to have a lower ppb on the Cadmium reading because of the dairy (for example). Although not ideal – but if you are going to cheat (knowing it is bad and not a health food) – mix with dairy or something else high fat (also nuts, but not peanuts or pistachios!)
The problem is that Cocoa has been touted as a health food for a couple of decades at least now – and people are eating it raw (or in the form of a low fat content dark chocolate) and in large quantities – daily.

Thank you so much for having this tested, Tamara! I’ve been using the product for almost two years, unfortunately. I have immediately stopped use. Thank you for saving me from more years of damage.
Thank you for commenting!

So referring back to the above conversation you had with Blueprint ref cocoa powder…
Did they (or Brian) realize that PPB was the appropriate test threshold vs PPM??
I cannot believe that Brain (based on his extensive blood and biomarker testing) would consume anything that could possibly deter from longevity.
Thanks
