Tamara Rubin is a multiple-federal-award-winning independent advocate for childhood Lead poisoning prevention and consumer goods safety, and a documentary filmmaker. She is also a mother of Lead-poisoned children (two of her sons were acutely Lead-poisoned in 2005).
- Tamara owns and runs Lead Safe Mama, LLC — a community collaborative woman-owned small business for childhood Lead poisoning prevention and consumer goods safety.
- Since 2009, Tamara has been using XRF technology (a scientific testing method) using the exact instrumentation employed by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to test consumer goods for toxicants (specifically heavy metals — including Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Antimony, and Arsenic).
- Since July of 2022, the work of Lead Safe Mama, LLC has been responsible for 5 product recalls (FDA and CPSC).
- All test results reported on this website are science-based, accurate, and replicable.
- Items that Lead Safe Mama, LLC reports on are tested multiple times to confirm the results published (for each component tested).

We’re thrilled to share with you (Lead Safe Mama, LLC’s readers and community members) that we invited Ahimsa to become an affiliated partner of Lead Safe Mama, LLC.
Ahimsa is only our THIRD official affiliate corporate partner (joining Solidteknics and Naturepedic in supporting our work). We have very strict guidelines for who we invite to collaborate in this way, which is why — since our founding as an independent LLC (in January of 2018) — we have only invited three manufacturers to officially join us as affiliate partners! We invited Ahimsa to become an affiliate partner this month only after extensively testing all of their stainless steel products (all three types of finish — blue, classic, and rainbow — on their stainless children’s dishes) and determining that their products meet the strictest standards* for items intended for use by children (and all humans!).
*Here at Lead Safe Mama, LLC, rather than simply being satisfied with any product manufacturer’s claims that their offerings meet current relevant regulatory standards (or claims that their product is “non-toxic” or “safe”), we conduct independent XRF testing capable of detecting and quantifying the presence (i.e. actual “total content” — down to single digit parts per million, or ppm) of any Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Antimony, and/or Arsenic.
All Ahimsa’s children’s dishes (we tested all three color variants — plain stainless, blue, and rainbow) tested negative for Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, Mercury, and Antimony using XRF technology. As a result, we feel these stainless dishes are a great option for children’s dishes — especially given nearly all of the silicone options available for children’s dishes that we have tested have been positive for “trace”* levels of Cadmium (a known carcinogen). *Note: “Trace” in this case means levels typically in the range of 15 to 40 ppm Cadmium, which is considered “safe by all current relevant standards,” but is not negative.

Thank you so much for supporting our work in this way — and for supporting a company doing their best to make safer products for children. Without further ado, below are the full test results for the “Classic” set of Ahimsa stainless dishes pictured (we are publishing three articles — one for each of their three finishes — with full XRF test results). You will be able to find all three articles by clicking this link once they are all published.
Thank you so much to Ahimsa for partnering in supporting the Lead Safe Mama worldwide community in this way!
Note: My children are older now (15, 18, 21, and 27!) so I do want to confirm that while my kids did really love trying these dishes out, these dishes are really sized for young kids’ smaller hands (although the dish and bowl are still perfect for bigger picky eaters — especially kiddos like mine with Autism, or other similar diagnoses, including Sensory Processing Disorder/SPD who prefer to keep their food-types separate)! My youngest two (Charlie and Avi) especially liked the feel and slick finish of these dishes — specifically, the way the fork and spoon feel… even though they were a bit small for my giant man-sized teenagers!

I held my breath when I saw your email! I have used Ahimsa for my now 27 month old since she started solids. They are worth the price for their quality. It is a relief to know they are as safe as I hoped. Thank you for the article and discount code!

Yay!!!

Me too!!!! LOL I’ve been using these dishes for my 18 month old. What a relief!

Is the 80,000 ppm nickel content safe? Is it going to leach into tomato and citrus based foods?
I have been putting off buying these for a while after seeing so much go wrong with stainless steel. Thank you for testing them.
Tamara says
Hello Tasha,
Thank you for commenting!
80,000 ppm Nickel is standard for food-grade stainless steel (also known as 304 stainless steel or 18/8 stainless steel.)
There is not really any concern for leaching with something like a plate (or a cup, bowl or silverware.)
The leaching concern (for nickel in stainless steel) is more specifically a concern for long-form cooking in stainless steel vessels.
The scientific studies regarding this specifically looked at cooking highly acidic tomato sauce for 8 or 10 hours or more in stainless pots and pans. I discuss this in detail in this article: https://tamararubin.com/2022/08/why-do-some-stainless-steel-cookware-items-have-a-prop-65-warning-isnt-stainless-steel-non-toxic/
I personally have no concern for high quality stainless steel dishes like these (when used as intended!) I have been using stainless steel dishes for my family for multiple decades! (Actually across four different decades now! the 1990s, the 2000s, the 2010s and now the 2020s) 🙂
My oldest son is 27 years old and was born in 1996. 🙂

I’m soooo glad to see this!! I purchased just about every product Ahimsa offers earlier this year for my 5 and 2 year olds to use. It was definitely an investment for us to do with me being a stay at home mom. I found ur site after starting my “non toxic lifestyle” and always hoped/wondered that the expensive dinnerware we invested in are truly not toxic or green washed. Thank you for giving me this piece of mind. You’re amazing at what you do <3 Thank you for advocating for our families

Is the Mindful Mealtime set the same as the plain “classic” set for children? I’d like to get the set you tested.
Thanks!
Tamara says
If you click through to Ahimsa’s site from one of the images in this article you can see this is the “Mindful Mealtime” product set in the classic (plain stainless steel) finish. So yes – same thing. Thank you!

Would you expect the same results for the “Purposeful Plates” (the ones without dividers)? Thanks!!
