My son A.J. performed LIVE in Valencia, Spain last night. (video)
April 30, 2023 – Sunday
Well, I cannot express how proud I am of my kiddo right now!…
Last night my 2nd eldest son (A.J. Rubin) performed a live Klezmer music set as the closing number for a concert in Valencia, Spain. Please click the image above and listen to all three songs of his group! Turn the volume on LOUD – and be prepared to dance! 🙂 His group starts playing at about 1:42:00 in the recording, the link above should take you right to the start with the intro of his band. All three songs are all amazing, but the 2nd and 3rd one are just… wow! He’s the one in the picture above playing trumpet (the sparkles on him are glitter! lol!)
For those of you who are new here… A.J. is currently 20 years old (he’ll be 21 in July!), and next month he is completing his third year on full scholarship (getting nearly all A’s!!!) at Berklee College of Music.
A.J. was acutely Lead-poisoned when he was 3 years old, and he has done so much to overcome the significant challenges he has faced over the course of his relatively short life so far – challenges resulting from his Lead-exposure (learning disabilities [dyslexia, ADHD]; sensory processing disorder, chronic illness (he had life-saving emergency surgery when he was just five years old and also missed most of 6th grade due to illness); multiple significant, very serious medical complications [including serious digestive system and immune system issues, life-threatening food allergies & insect-bite allergies]).
I really could not be more proud — and also thankful for the amazing opportunities he has been given by this world [opportunities which he has also worked incredibly hard to manifest himself!].
It’s been quite the 5 months for A.J. (since December) – starting with his brief appearance in the Whitney Houston Biopic (I Wanna Dance with Somebody) this past holiday season with a bit part (playing bugle!) through which he became Screen Actors Guild (SAG) eligible!! This kiddo is going places (as are all four of my boys, I anticipate!)
If anyone knows of a good agent who represents solid musical talent for parts in films, PLEASE have them be in touch! A.J. would love to do more film work, and he is a disciplined and seasoned professional multi-instrumentalist — playing everything from Classical, and both trad and modern Jazz; to Blues, Rock, and Pop; to Klezmer, World, and beyond (on Trumpet and other brass instruments; Piano; Guitar; and vocals — and is also into acrobatics, novelty instruments, and crowd-pleasing stunts (he also can do most of what he does musically while unicycling and sometimes also juggling!!!) 😉 – see photos below and on Instagram!
Enjoy the music (and share it with any kiddos in your life!) You can follow my kids on Instagram too: @AJRubinArt @ColescottRubin and @RubinBrothers.

So talented! Thanks for sharing!
Sorry to be a Desi-downer but I’ve been thinking about musical instruments for a while and this article, while I think the uplifting content is awesome, reminded me to ask you if you’ve ever tested any instruments? I’m not sure if brass instruments are actually brass (trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba, heck, even saxophone, though that’s technically a reed instrument though made of metal…)? Or what their (usually silver-coloured) mouthpieces might be made of… Just wondering if you’d happened to test at any point.
We have violin and clarinet in our house and I worry about the glazes on violin.
Violins tend to have toxicant free finishes on the wood (at least in the past 30 or 40 years). If you have a violin that is older than that, I am not sure. Musical instrument testing is a big part of what I do – as my children are professional musicians 🙂 Check out The Rubin Brothers on Instagram.
Now there’s some good news! Currently he’s renting because he’s growing through violins quickly, so I’m pretty sure it’s fairly new. Phew. (I was worried about Mercury, no idea why.)
My clarinet is from childhood (40 years ago) and wood (a Buffet). I’ve been trying to decide whether to switch to a cheaper, newer, plastic one.
I will check out their Instagram!
